Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Visani was warm, comfortable, and really did not want to wake up. She yawned loudly and rubbed her face. Z'skel shifted behind her and she momentarily held her breath, worried that she'd woken him, though frowned slightly when she realized his arms were wrapped around her waist and he was spooning her in the most awkward of fashions. The brownrider sighed and relaxed into his grasp, the least she could do was hang around long enough to get his name, but part of her couldn't deny that she enjoyed his warm breath on his neck, and their romp in the furs had indeed been enjoyable. She didn't want to think about the flight and refused to let herself be bothered by the outcome, of course Emanth didn't win and what would be the benefit of him actually winning? None whatsoever.

She paused briefly in her mental tirade and brushed her consciousness against Emanth's, thankfully he was sleeping and didn't get to share in her brooding. Though no doubt he would be just as broody and would demand his weyr be swept about five times before he would be satisfied that there was no sand. Not to mention he would be whiny because his muscles were sore and the sand surely had ripped up his hide beyond all hope of him not being itchy for a good couple of sevendays.

Z’skel was not a morning person, especially on the days that he actually slept for any significant amount of time. He was way too comfortable to jump up and very content with the knowledge that he had slept for quite a while. Starting to roll over, the Brownrider stopped when he felt warm skin that was not his own under his hands. He was content with other things too. He relaxed again as Visani did to automatically reach out to his dragon. Iolauth was still sleeping off defeat and Z’skel saw no reason to rush and start the day until he was needed. It was very easy to imagine Iolauth still somehow covered in sand. Going swimming and oiling the Brown was probably all that was on the to do list for the day. He felt rested and didn’t even feel the need to get klah right away like he did almost every other day.

So he shifted away a bit to give his company space but kept his arms loosely around her waist. It was annoying that he didn’t know the other Dragonrider’s name. He’d at least always known the people he had woken up next to at High Reaches.

“Z’skel of Brown Iolauth, by the way.” He teased, guessing that the woman was awake by her breathing. “I think I forgot to mention that.” He knew it was a silly way to introduce himself but didn’t care at the moment, even pressing his face into her neck and sighing groggily as he tried to guess if she was attached to the brave Blue that had joined the Flight.

Visi examined what she could see of the room in silence. Obviously by the smell they were in the lower caverns which tended to have a musty, earthy scent but felt the man loosen his grip and move away slightly, she didn't mind since she was slightly too hot anyway. The cool air touched her back despite the fur that was lying over them both.

"You did forget to mention that." she mumbled, her voice still quiet with sleep. He rode a brown though, she mused inwardly, it seemed as though she'd only been sharing beds with other brownriders after flights lately. "I'm Visani rider of Brown Emanth." She'd never even heard the name Z'skel before this moment. "I don't think I've even seen you around before so you must be a recent transfer right?" she was positive that she'd atleast known the names of all the riders in the weyr, but she admitted that she may have gotten behind in keeping track over the past months, what with her wingleader having been in a coma and all.

She stiffened involuntarily when he pressed his face into her neck, as much as she hated to admit that she enjoyed that he hadn't automatically gotten up and left her when he'd woken up. The action was unexpected and tender compared to the number of after-flight mornings and not at all what she was used to without the addition of flightlust.

A large part of Z’skel’s mind seemed to be intent on dozing back off again while the remainder worked to keep him focused on the conversation. He wondered what time of day it was in the first place. Distant noises reminded him that they were not in his weyr and couldn’t stay in the Lower Caverns room forever. There’d be work to be done in a few sevendays. Bets to be made regarding the upcoming clutch. The winning Bronze had been quite large if his memory served. Maybe he’d gamble a bit. Visani’s voice stopped him from drifting off on anymore random thoughts.

He opened his eyes again at her reply, amused that she had guessed they were transfers. Maybe she was like him; took pride in knowing practically everyone in the Weyr. “Well it is very nice to meet you Visani. You’re right, we transferred from High Reaches in late summer…for my own good.” It was immature of him to still be homesick.

When he felt her stiffen Z’skel loosened his grip on her waist more and lifted his head slightly. He didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. The clearer part of his mind took the opportunity to grab hold of a fuzzy memory then, the look on her face, the apology…Shards. The Brownrider pulled away and sat up with a start, one hand on the furs at either side of Visani’s shoulders as he intently peered at her face. What was done was done but he wasn’t going to be happy if it’d been her first experience with flightlust.

“How old is your Emanth?” Was what spilled from his thoughts, face flushing a bit as he realized what an odd question it was. She might not even get what he meant from it.

Visani wanted to ask why it had been it been for his own good, but she figured it had been for his own reasons. And even if he did tell her than she'd be obligated to tell him that she was originally a transfer and had come here to escape her vindictive and selfish mother. Which truly was never a story that she even liked to share with herself, and luckily Emanth had a tendency to forget everything about his previous home except the cold of the winter snow. The question was removed from her mind when she found herself pinned in place and looking into his dark eyes above her.

She frowned up at him, the sudden movement had startled her out of her sleepy reverie and the intensity set her on edge "He's eight, why do you ask?" The question didn't make sense, why would the age of her dragon have any sort of meaning to this man. Emanth was in his prime and a proud, handsome specimen of a dragon.

Visi, What's wrong?

Emanth's voice gently touched her mind and was tinged with concern from the pinprick of annoyance that had disrupted his nap. Nothing, Love. I'll be up to oil you in a little bit, go back to sleep. her features softened and she relaxed back into the furs as she communicated with her dragon. Emanth truly acted as a balm for her highly strung attitudes, simply knowing that he was rested and that she would get to spend the rest of the day with him could improve her temper and she could regard Z'skel with more curiosity and less of a scathing attitude.

The large Brown huffed and settled back down, atleast she had found somebody that would have her. He tucked his wings tightly against his sides and curled his tail more firmly around himself to drift back into sleep.

The concerned look on Z'skel's face disappeared in an instant. The slight scowl and annoyed look that replaced it was more at himself than at Visani's frowning. Maybe he did need klah still, if only to clear his mind so he would not jump to conclusions with no reasoning behind them. He broke eye contact and stared at a spot on the wall at the other end of the room instead as he tried to think of a proper response. Would he just insult her? Belatedly, he found himself amused that she had been a Dragonrider twice as long as he had. His worry was pointless. Glancing back down at Visani he chuckled quietly before shifting again to lay on his back next to her.

"For some reason I thought you had…apologized…before because it was Emanth's first time chasing a female or something." He replied. He never had any problem calling himself out on his own mistakes. "Sorry." The apology was sincere but he had to stop himself from asking why she had really apologized. It stuck out in his mind for some reason but he probably only remembered since he had been a little more grounded than usual with the sandstorm involved.

"Will I be seeing a lot of storms like yesterday?" He added after a few seconds of silence, putting his hands behind his head and staring at the ceiling. "I was just getting over it being so Sharding hot here."

She let out a brief laugh, "It's alright, I don't even remember Emanth's first time chasing she'd barricaded herself in her room until the whole affair had been over. He hadn't won but neither had she given in to the urge, she'd almost been proud of herself but Emanth had worried himself into such a state of frustration that he'd refused to chase until he couldn't resist the call of a Queenflight, which he had also lost. So why would Visi apologize? Since then she'd encouraged him to Chase whenever the urge took him. He'd had mixed success over the years due to his nature which made him a less vicious contender in flights. He would rather be chosen by a female on fair terms than even dare force her into a decision such as some males would do.

She vaguely remembered the feeling of embarrassment, perhaps even the shame of giving into those natural urges. But there was no way around it, and just maybe a flight was a proper excuse to give in and for those brief hours just let what happens, happen. She couldn't deny that it was a relief to not have to even think or worry about what she was doing. But she could never explain this, it would make no sense to him and really, she had trouble figuring it out herself.

"They happen every once in awhile, the most at one point was twice during the same month but usually between two and four every year. They're a bit hard to predict though. Even if they are annoying they're harmless besides getting sand everywhere and drying out dragon hides."

She rolled onto her side and nestled close to him. After she got over her previous and really rather unfounded irritation she found no reason to run off quite yet. He was warm, innocent of the harshness of the desert, and his worry over her innocence to flightlust was touching. The least she could do was talk with him, especially if he was new to Vaioa "You don't like the heat? Where did you transfer from?" she asked and tentatively laid an arm across his chest.

He was very happy that she wasn’t offended. It would not have been too much of a shock for her to answer curtly, put her clothes on and make an excuse to leave. At least that’s what Z’skel thought was the alternative. He took offense when people thought he was several Turns younger than he was but couldn’t expect everyone to be insulted by trivial things. Visani’s words made him think of the first time Iolauth had chased. They’d lost, and Z’skel had woken up next to a Bluerider from his Weyrling group. He much preferred results like the one he was currently in; said Bluerider had been another man. Z’skel had grown up in a Weyr so he wasn’t overly surprised but it had been extremely awkward for him.

“The wind was the difficult part, I think.” He commented in response to the information. “It didn’t even seem to last very long…I’m happy to know they don’t pop up every other day though. Wouldn’t want to deal with crazy Queens jumping into them all the time. Iolauth will want to be drowned in oil when he wakes up I suspect.”

I am shocked you did not wake me up earlier.

Z’skel smiled fondly as his dragon’s voice entered his mind on cue. Iolauth was still tired, but Z’skel could feel the Brown’s hunger even over that. I seem to have slept through the night. Don’t you dare not eat something. I’ll come meet you whenever you’re up for a bath.

I do not think I like flying in sand. I’ll eat first and you can rest more.

Z’skel smiled even more, knowing that he’d just have a bigger mess to clean later with a bloody and sandy dragon.

He contently shifted to get comfortable again when Visani moved close once more. “I’ve found I have little tolerance for moving around and working when it’s hot, makes me more tired. Probably just because I’m not used to it. It’s just weird that it’s mid-autumn and it’s still hot during the day…by my standards. I was born and raised at High Reaches Weyr, so I’ll probably complain about it being too warm even when winter comes.” He paused, glancing down to direct what was probably an idiotic smirk at Visani as he moved an arm to curl around her shoulder. “Not that I dislike heat altogether. Have you always been at Vaioa?”

And you compare me to a Green. You’re talking too much.

"I don't even want to think about how whiny Emanth is going to be." as much as she enjoyed bathing and oiling, Emanth was happy as long as he didn't itch, but he was guaranteed to be itchy until his hide healed and thus complain just about every other moment. And then she would be forced to remind him that it had been his choice to chase in the first place and that would only make him complain more so.

She listened to his plight and could easily understand. The desert was rough to anyone unused to its harshness and even those who were accustomed to it could be easily taken by surprise. "It's unbearable to work during the day, it's easier to do everything in the mornings and evenings during the summer especially. Even staying up late at night to get stuff done is better than fighting the hot sun. Except for wingdrills and taking care of things that have to be done I'm hardly ever even awake when the sun is up." She explained, perhaps an odd way of doing things but one that worked well while thread wasn't falling at least.

Visani smiled up at him sheepishly, he really was very nice and for once she was pleased that Emanth hadn't won a flight. "I transferred from Benden Weyr about five years ago, it took about a year for me to adjust to the heat while Emanth loved it from the start. When I first got here it was winter and the temperature was pleasant compared to the snow that was falling at Benden. Late spring and all of summer were nearly unbearable though and I almost transferred back a couple times."

How easy it would be for him to just sit here and talk about unimportant things all day! Z’skel and Iolauth had never been an over-serious pair and yet since arriving they’d been more so than was customary for them. It was funny now to just be laying back and talking about how petty the dragons were going to be. Besides when he’d met one of the Weyrlings, it’d been all business with the other riders. Z’skel was enjoying Visani’s company. He would enjoy the swim whenever Iolauth was ready for his bath and until then be content with small-talk.

Suppressing a laugh, he made a mental note to repeat what she said about working at odd times of the day to Iolauth. It ironically sounded like he would be more suited to the summer heat than he thought when it came to productivity. Not that that was the reason they had transferred. He made a face at the thought of the Healers’ reasoning.

“This will sound odd, but that actually makes me feel better and I don’t think a work schedule like that has anything wrong with it. I have trouble sleeping. The Healers at High Reaches thought the warm weather would help when next Turn comes around.” He waved his free hand in a dismissive gesture of the issue. “So having to focus at odd hours of the day will seem normal to me.”

Visani’s shy smile caused him to alter his own ridiculous one to something kinder and softer. If they had switched during winter, Vaioa would have indeed seemed like a paradise. “Well at least now I know I’m not crazy. Can’t say the same for Iolauth though, he’s always liked the water so the summer heat was even a little much for him. If you ever need to find us and we’re not in our weyr it’d be wise to look in the water cavern next. He’ll be happy when he can still sun mid-winter though.”
