Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Whistle While You Work (Open; Candidates?)

Breantur sat cross-legged on the cot that had been assigned to him. He wanted to whistle, but he had pins in his mouth, which made it impossible. The round-faced, shaggy-haired young man had a look of pleasant concentration on his face as he carefully ran a needle through a piece of fabric. He was working on making a new tunic for himself. He really ought to be working on one of the projects he'd been given to do for other Weyr residents, but he wasn't really in the mood to work on them just then, and he figured he'd have time to work on them once he was done with the tunic he was working on. It was -so- close to being finished! He just couldn't resist completing his new tunic before doing the assigned work.

Humming tunelessly under his breath, he corrected a badly taken stitch, then continued on, pleased with the neatness of the line. It wasn't a fancy tunic, no, no, just something to wear around the Weyr while he worked... but it would look nice on him nevertheless, yes it would! He knew his own measurements intimately and liked how he looked wearing his own work.

Then he heard a sound, and looked up automatically. Someone else coming into the Barracks. Out of curiosity, he peered to see who it was.

(( Can do just general Candidate interaction, or your character can ask him to mend or make something for them -- he's a Journeyman Weaver so he's capable of making a lot of cloth-based stuff. ;p ))

Aaryn didn't bother picking up her feet as she shuffled into the barracks, kicking up a miniature dust storm in the process. Since the loaned Garnet Indith's flight the weyr had been a bit busy than normal preparing the the future clutching and the hatching. Having been assigned to the Ground Crew she had been spending most of her day clearing away vegetation, tiding various area, or cleaning the beast pens. Clean the pens had been the least enjoyable and she had feared she'd never get the stench of feces and urine out of her clothes. Luckily today's chores had not involved cleaning the pens, but she was still worn out and the thought of spending her free time doing a whole lot of nothing sounded pretty sharding good.

The young woman collapsed into an empty chair with a sigh. I refuse to move until those eggs are hatching! She announced to no one in particular. Eyes closed she contemplated a warm bath to ease her sore muscles, but at the moment even that small tasked seemed like too much trouble. Any volunteers to carry a lady to the bathing pool? She mumbled around a yawn.

((If a third char is too much I can exit Tiael out so just lemme know guys :) ))

Idle fingers drummed along the walls as Tiael ambled through the barracks. Post-chores was her favourite time of the day for relaxing. The Weyr, she'd discovered, had a nice bathing cavern each for the male and female Candidates. Couple this with a comfy cot that wasn't swaying around and wasn't in the workers quarters and Tiael was almost a happy girl. Almost because there was much that was still perplexing about the whole Candidacy business but hey, she wasn't going to argue with the perks she'd found so far. Entering the common room she watched as a few people had already made it back ahead of her from chores.

Stretching her arms luxuriously over her head, she glanced down at her attire and frowned slightly. The clothes weren't bad, but they were nothing compared to some of the things she used to own. Expecially her favourite dress, embroidery and softness to die for. Now her clothes were practical, though not too shabby. Still, it was a little disappointing. Hearing a sigh and an announcement about not moving, Tiael glanced up and scooted round the edge of the room; watching the other Candidate. She was pretty, no doubt about that...though the chores seemed to be taking their toll on her. Leaning against the wall, she tilted her head slightly, smirking a little at the question. "Ahhh, but you might fall asleep in the water and that is not usually a good idea." Tiael piped up, an amused smile on her features. "Plus then, how would the dragons find you mm?" She said with a slight chuckle, keen as ever to get to know more people and find out more about this place. Every new face was a potential source of information, a potential ally she may need favours from later. Or even, someone to have some fun with. The other woman seemed to have a high opinion of herself, or she was just being humerus; Tiael was a little unsure which as she was so tired.

Glancing into the room she had stopped by, she saw another Candidate hard at work.....hard at work sewing! Now this, this might be good..... "Perhaps this fine young gentleman can help you though." She said with another grin, watching the shaggy-haired man working diligently. Perhaps if she could get his focus away from the tunic he was crafting with such care, attention and skill, she could also wrangle some extra additions to some of her garments. "It's looking great by the way, the tunic I mean." She said with a warm smile. Glancing between the 'lady' and the weaver she folded her arms lightly. "I don't think I've met either of you yet, I'm Tiael. Recently arrived and recently Searched. Nice to meet you both."

At first, Breantur wasn't particularly interested in the other two Candidates. He nodded a greeting when they first walked in, but then quickly returned to his work, frowning slightly not in annoyance but concentration. However, when one of them complimented his work, he allowed himself to be distracted, smiling at her amicably around the pins in his teeth. Reaching up with his free hand, he removed them in order to be able to speak.

"Breantur. Good to meet you," he said, though his back-country High Reaches accent made it sounds like 'Good ta meetchew' despite his attempts lately to learn to speak more like the Vaioans around him. Gesturing vaguely at the tunic with the hand holding the pins, he said, "It's nothin' special, just a li'l somethin' I'm workin' on. I'm a Journeyman -- well, I mean, until I Impress I am, I guess," he corrected himself, blinking as if a bit confused. "If I Impress. Anyway," he hurried on, "I've not been here that long m'self, so it's not too surprising we 'aven't met. Welcome, for what it's worth." He gave a sardonic little grin. Then he blinked, looking puzzled. "Now what's this you needed 'elpin' with?"

Arryn shifted a little to find a better position, eyes still closed as her mind hovered just on the edge of sleep. She was at the place were she was still partially aware of what was going on around her. Arryn was vaguely aware that someone else had entered the common area and when a female voice broke through her eye fluttered open. "I think it sounds like a lovely idea. Well maybe not the getting all wrinkly bit." The girl answered, pulling a face at the thought. With a grunt she pushed herself into a more upright position, angling her head to give the other girl a friendly smile. "Well I figure I have a few weeks before those eggs hatch. Though the way they are working use you'd think the things would be hatching tomorrow." The corner of her mouth twitched upward in a cheeky grin.

When Tiael mentioned a gentleman Arryn twisted around, she hadn't realized there was someone else nearby. He was not familiar to her, with his long hair he would have been difficult to miss. With eggs waiting to hatch though new candidates were being searched nearly everyday. From the looks of the tunic he was working he also appeared quite skillful with a needle and thread. "It's good to meet you both. I am Arryn." She introduced herself chuckling a little at Breantur's confusion. "I believe Tiael was referring to me, but I wouldn't dream of interrupting your work. I was just moaning about how hard they have been working the ground crew. Arryn admitted rubbing a hand against the back of her neck to emphasis just how hard she had been working.

Tiael chuckled softly as the other girl pulled a face, also sharing a dislike for being wrinkly in a bath. To the work comment Tiael's smile grew a little. "They certainly don't like letting anyone rest." She agreed; though didn't think it appropriate to mention she was feeling quite fine herself. A little tired, but then, her day hadn't really been all that stressful. Perhaps this girl had been a crafter, or even a Holder who wasn't used to work. Not that Tiael was an expert herself, but travelling about from place to place had seen her keep in good shape.

Tiael raised an eyebrow slightly at the weaver's accent but didn't pass comment on it. Seems she wasn't the only one from quite a ways away. Still, that shouldn't be surprising should it? A clutch always brought Candidates and sometimes, depending on the standing of the Weyr, they could be from anywhere she'd been told upon her arrival. Besides, she had a liking for accents, she'd even picked up a few as she'd travelled about; they often came in handy. He was shy, very modest about his work. Most people wouldn't know how to darn their own socks, let alone put together a full tunic. "No need to be modest, the tunic looks well made. I may even have to take some lessons from you so I can work on my own things. As for Impressing.....I hear the entire thing is rather random so, you never know."

Filing the names away in her head, Tiael remained quiet as the others talked a little, smiling as Arryn explained her comment. At least it had been understood by one of them. Watching Arryn rub at her neck, Tiael mused over the idea of trying to help the pretty young lady out; but decided this was possibly not the most appropriate time. "You'll get used to the work." Tiael said, shrugging her shoulders a little and getting more comfortable. "Probably just using muscles that don't normally get used. Riders seem very active, so I guess it shouldn't be surprising we're running about like headless Wherries. All preparation I'd imagine for the hatching."

Tiael paused thoughtfully for a moment, looking perplexed. "Speaking of which, how long do dragon eggs take to hatch?" She looked between the pair of them. "I've, not spent much time at a Weyr." She explained briefly. "Is it sevendays? months?"

Arryn nodded heartily as the other girl agreed with her, "Gotta have the Weyr spotless for the new Hatchlings and all the Holders and Crafters that come to see them." She smiled with the thought of the newly hatched dragons that would soon be making their appearance. Maybe she would be one of the lucky ones, though with only ten eggs on the sand and over twice as many Candidates hoping to impress who knew what would happen.

Arryn tilted her head studying the Tiael as she commented on the tunic Breantur was working on. She appeared a couple years older and Arryn got the impression that there was a bit more to her than met the eye. She was friendly and talkative though and right now that was all that really mattered.

She stretched her arms above her head, wincing a bit. Maybe all this work was an attempt to get them all in shape since at least some of them would have a demanding hatchling to care for soon enough. She looked back toward Tiael and grinned, "Either that or it'll kill me. She chuckled. "I think they just might be trying to weed out the weaklings before the hatching. And if so they have succeed." She said with a mock sigh of defeat.

Arryn perked up at the mention of dragons. She looked thoughtful as she contemplated Tiael's question. "You know I'm not really sure." She frowned in concentration, drumming fingers absently against her though.

Breantur smiled a bit at Tiael's compliments, rubbing at the back of his neck with his free hand. "Oh, I'm just a Journeyman. I ain't qualified t'teach. Guess I could show you somefin' now an' again, tho', if ye'd like," he allowed, as if reluctant, though it was more embarrassment that colored his tone.

He wasn't used to such attention to his work. His fellow Weavers were polite enough, even complimentary at times, but that was from artist to artist, tradesman to tradesman (or woman, of course; there were a lot of female Weavers.) It wasn't really the same as having someone outside the Craft express such interest. She'd even said something about learning from him! Breantur felt a warm, fuzzy sort of security. Even if he never did Impress in the short time he had before aging out, he now felt confident that he had what it took to continue in his Craft. The thought was very reassuring.

The conversation shifted topic, to how long dragon eggs take to hatch. Breantur was a relatively new Candidate himself; Indith's clutch's Hatching would be his very first time to Stand. So he shrugged. "Dunno, really. It's prob'ly not days, tho'. I'd hazard sevendays. Months seems too long some'ow. Those lot on the Sands'd bake hard if they stayed there too long."

((I'm unsure if you guys want to carry this on or not, so let me know. I'm happy to keep posting ^^))

Arryn seemed cheerful enough despite being tired, which also meant she didn't get sulky at Tiael's almost indifference. It certainly made it easier to chat, and to get conversation flowing. The older girl chuckled and nodded. "I'd forgotten it wasn't just Weyr's that attended." She mused out loud, wondering just what it would be like in the Weyr with so many visitors....not to mention a clutch full of new dragons. Possibly even, one for herself.

Before she let that thought take hold again, she watched Arryn stretch and listened to Breantur as he suddenly became rather shy. It was enough to cause her to grin and look round, watching as he didn't quite seem to know what to do with the notion of teaching someone. "I'd love that." She said cheerfully. It would be useful to learn how to sew, but it was also a good way to get to know Breantur it seemed. The boy was talented, with or without a dragon he was skilled and she wasn't about to let something like that just walk on by. "Maybe if we get a quiet evening soon I can come bug you for a bit for some tips."

Arryn seemed rather easy-going, while Breantur seemed easilly flustered. Both quite different but then, no one at the Weyr seemed alike. Briefly she wondered why she hadn't stopped at a Weyr sooner; then remembered that dragons tended to make things a little more tricky. Still, she was determined to make a go of things here. "I rather hope it doesn't kill you, what if there's a dragon waiting for you? I think it's more likely to weed people out as you say." Laughing at Arryn's sigh Tiael shook her head and pushed off from the wall, rubbing at her neck for a moment. "I think we'll be seeing you on the sands with the rest of us." She commented with a wink.

As dragons became the focus of the conversation it became clear that they were as clueless as she was, though Breantur had some good theories. Baked hatchlings did not sound good by any stretch of the imagination, plus there were other factors to consider. "Hmm, it wouldn't make sense to be feeding this many Candidates for months either, plus there isn't the rush that days would imply." She mused out loud, tapping her chin thoughtfully. "I suppose the only question left is, how many sevendays is it now?....I, also suppose only the dragons know the answer to that too." Tiael frowned for a moment, then shrugged. "Well, it gives us all a chance to get to know each other. Are either of you hoping for a particular colour? It seems to affect a rider's life quite a bit, the colour you Impress I mean."

Arryn turned her gaze toward the shy Journeyman as he fumbled a bit under Tiael's compliments to her work. No one could really label Arryn as shy, well with somethings maybe, but not normally. His work was quite good. She envied the fact he had a craft to fall back. Arryn knew if she did not impress her choices were limited. She would either have to return home, which after the freedom of the Weyr was not very appealing, or remain at the Weyr. Remaining with the constanst reminder of what she had not achieved would be difficult. Luckily she did not have to spend time dwelling on such thoughts just yet.

She grinned at Tiael's comment and shrugged. Maybe there would be a dragon waiting for, even now among the eggs on the sands. That was what each and every candidate here hoped for, even if they didn't give voice to it. Plenty though still left the sands alone. Some would have the comfort of being able to stand again, while for others their time would be up. Oh I'll be there. Arryn assured her. I haven't spent all this time doing lessons and chores to chuck away the chance to be on the sands for a hatching. Even if I don't impress it will be thrilling to see them hatching right in front of use." She gestured broadly.

As Breantur voiced his opinion about how long they might have to wait before the eggs hatch she nodded in agreement. "That sounds about right. Arryn answered. Tiaels question made her think for a minute, her brow furrowed in concentration. I think I'd like a fighting color. Can't really see myself as a Queen rider." She said with a chuckle. "What about you two?"
