Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The black hair youth dragged his case through the common area and towards the first corridor on the right. According to the man who gave him a quick rundown of the weyr, his room was at the end of this hallway on the right. Corusek proceeded with trepidation, trying not to bother anyone with the sound of his case dragging on the stone. He approached the door and lowly opened it. It was a nice little set up, though Corusek didn’t really like the positioning, had it been closer to the entrance to the hall, he might be able to get more light in from the common room. He'd have to get a basket of glows.

He gently closed the door behind him as he returned to the common room, not wanting to be alone in his room just yet. It was a bit dark, and the dark always put him on edge. the unpleasantness of being unable to see always drove him to the brink of desperation. just as a hint of panic was about to set it, He took a deep breath and forced those emotions and thought away suddenly. He couldn't act like a frightened child in front of the other candidates.

He walked down the hallway and sat quietly in the common room, crossing his legs his hair tried to fall gently behind his face, but he swept it back behind his ear and gently lowered his hands. he looked to the others and then around the common room, barely moving his head, only his eyes. His mother told him to make friends, but this was proving more difficult than he expected. He coughed a little nervously, not sure how to proceed other than just saying; "Hi." He felt like that was a poor attempt at being friendly, but really, it was hard enough to even say that, considering Corusek had never really been on his own like this before.

Daart was lounging about in the commons, feet up on a table when the newcomer showed up. It was one of those rare days where absolutely nothing seemed to go wrong and the little candidate was taking full advantage of this. Bootstrap lay draped across his chest, looking rather ridiculously large for a fire lizard in comparison to his tiny bonded.

Despite the brown’s trouble-loving nature, he was quite happy to kick back and be lazy with Daart when it was permissible. There were so few occasions to relax lately what with chores, Denz and his friends, and the hatching that loomed on the horizon.

Daart trailed adoring fingers along his fire lizard’s folded wings, admiring his perfect leathery brown color and the velvety softness of his hide. He often found himself daydreaming about owning a small army of the creatures. He could see them in his mind’s eye, multicolored partners in crime that would serve him loyally and protect him from people like Denz.

And rumor had it that there were three new golds in the Weyr proper so he might just get the chance to snag another egg or two. As many as possible really; Daart didn’t care how greedy that made him look. He had no real friends and if Bootstrap was a joy, having more could only make him happier.

Bootstrap lifted his head sleepily and trilled a greeting to the boy that entered and Daart flashed the unfamiliar candidate a bright, crooked-toothed smile when the other candidate greeted him. “Oh hi! You must be new!” He didn’t bother sitting up. Surely the boy wouldn’t be too offended if he continued to relax. And if he was…well he’d understand soon enough what a luxury this sort of free time was at the Weyr. Chores were brutal. “I’m Daart. This here’s Bootstrap. It’s nice to meet’cha! Did you just get here? Where were you Searched?”

Corusek smiled gently at the young boy, he looked like he was maybe only ten, but that was possible of he too was searched. The older lad looked the boy over, wondering of he too would be that dirty once he started his chores. Corusek nodded gently as he was acknowledged, a gently smile forming on his face. The boy seemed full of energy, and questions!

"why yes, I am new, I arrived just this morning. The tour took a while." he smiled gently as he recalled the tour, and wanted to spend a bit longer in the infirmary. He'd have to go visit later on, perhaps tomorrow. "I'm impressed with the wyer so far, have you been here long?" he said gently tilting his head. "where was I? Well, it was a small cothold, maybe a few hours of flight from here. The trip was rapid though..." Corusek shuddered a little remembering his trip between. "Oh I applologize! I almost forgot to give you my name, I am Corusek, nice to meet you Daart. And you too bootstrap." he said with another curt nod.

Daart grinned. “Oh I’ve been here for ‘bout half a turn now I reckon. Been a Weyrbrat all m’life though.” Well not all his life. He left out the little part about him being evicted from Ista for cutting the arse out of all the Weyrwoman’s clothes and being Searched again. That little tidbit of information could remain a secret until he Impressed. He didn’t want to compromise his candidacy again after all. He’d be quite happy to talk about the amusing terms of his exile after he had a dragon at his side. “I came here from Ista Weyr. Needed a little change of scenery, ya know?”

Bootstrap squeaked out a yawn and Daart smiled down affectionately at the little brown. “So you didn’t’ have to go far, huh? That’s good, I suppose. You’re already used to the scenery and the heat. Vaioa’s pretty great. Even if you don’t end up Impressing, the Hold’s only a short walk across the way and there’s plenty of things to do here. Not that I think you won’t Impress or anything. It’ll be a long wait though if we miss out on a dragon in Indith’s eggs though. Lisenyth flew only a few months ago and the other queens are still weyrlings.” He sized up the other boy a little bit. “What color you hopin’ for?”

Corusek's smile gently faded from his face, being replaced with his standard neutral expression. He tilted his head gently as he listened to the boy talk. he was a weyrbrat huh? He probably had a lot more experience with dragons, which was funny considering the age difference. It didn’t really bother Corusek, it was just something interesting to reflect on. "Ista? I'm not really sure where that is. Oh I agree, Vaioa has a nice climate though I wish it rained more often." He said gently, straitening his head out.

He chuckled on the inside as Daart began talking, and talking and talking. Not that Corusek minded that, he preferred listening anyways. He blinked rapidly hearing the small yawning, looking down at the brown firelizard. Now that was adorable. Corusek sat back once more, having leaned forwards to see the brown a little better. His eyes darted away for a moment at the mention of not impressing. It was something Corusek was hoping for, somewhat. Daart seemed excited though, and anxious. "I'm certain you will impress at the hatching, and don’t worry too much about me, I am patient." So there weren't many egg bearing dragons yet? Well it wasn't a crisis so far, the weyr would probably survive.

The young boy's question hit Corusek head on. His calm look snapped into confusion, then pondering. "I…I've never really thought of it very much. I don't know enough about the dragons to really make a decision, or hope really. What about yourself?"

It was a question Daart had pondered many times over the turns, and something almost every candidate wondered at some point. Daart knew that he would be a dragonrider someday, despite the odds against him, he hadn’t given even a thought to what he’d do if he didn’t Impress. There was always a way to sneak onto the sands, or even the occasional dragon that wandered its way into the audience. His dragon would find him someday. But as to which color he expected to Impress? That was something he’d never really been able to decide. He chewed his thumbnail as he thought for a moment, looking oddly serious for a child.

“Well…I dunno really. I mean, there’s good things about all of em. You got the big bronzes of course, most boys want ‘em. They’re the ones that get most of the attention and end up telling everyone what to do.” He ticked off the other colors on his fingers as he chattered on, oblivious of whether he was annoying the other boy or not with his ramblings. “Then there’s the coppers, which are pretty neat and they do a lot of what the bronzes do. And the Garnets which I thought only went to girls but Indith’s rider is a man so that would be interesting. I wouldn’t want a clutching dragon though, so if I got one of them I’d make it flame. And there’s browns and grays which are the same only ones a girl and one isn’t, and I’ve never met one but I don’t think they get the attention they deserve, you know?”

“There’s blues and greens too which are the smallest but they get to do all the fun stuff like searchin’ and acrobatics. The bigger dragons can’t do fancy flyin’ like they do so getting one of them would be much more fun, I suppose. I don’t really…have a preference. I just want a dragon. Most people tell me they see me on a blue though. That’s fine with me.”

Daart paused for breath and then laughed, realizing he had been babbling a bit. “I’m sorry…I’ll shut up if you want me to. Don’t get chances to be social with all my chores usually. Have you been assigned chores yet? They suck.”

Corusek sat calmly, listening to the young boy talk about the various dragon colours, noticing how serious the boy suddenly looked. The older candidate thought about the various colours as Daart listed them off, trying to imagine himself with each one. He could never really be in charge of a weyr, so that crossed the bronzes off. He had heard that the Garner Indith was paired with a male, but he never knew that it was uncommon. So where would that leave Corusek then? Probably best to simply wait and see. For all he knew it could have been an accident, or the result of something else. That piqued Corusek's curiosity… Greens, he remembered hearing something about men with the same 'tastes' as himself being most often paired with greens. If he impressed a green, that would probably solve that long running question.

He snapped out of his mind as Daart addressed him, the lad worried he was talking too much. "Oh, no no. I don’t mind. I prefer listening, actually." He said blinking a little to rid his mind of thoughts. "No, I haven't gotten my chores yet, I just arrived today. I was hoping to go speak to the infirmary and the Candidate master and inquire if I could perform mostly infirmary chores. Does that usually happen? Can we request to be placed in certain areas for chores?" He said, his voice had only a tinge of concern to his voice, and his face betrayed none of the mass of panic inside himself at the thought of never being able to enter an infirmary again.

Daart couldn’t help but chuckle a little at how lost the otherwise confident-looking boy seemed when faced with the intimidating work load of chores that were dumped upon every candidate. But he seemed to want the infirmary jobs which were, in Daart’s opinion anyways, some of the worst. He’d rather shovel herdbeast dung than mix foul-smelling numbweed or patch up stomach turning injuries or deal with the embarrassment of aiding the Weyr’s resident healers with the after effects of …over enthusiastic mating flights. He’d seen the scratch marks big male dragons left on the little greens and listened often to weyrhealers recite aftercare to rather embarrassed greenriders. And when Thread came, things would be so much worse.

Corusek was more than welcome to those chores if he wanted to take them off the rest of their backs.

“Ah…well if you talk to the candidate master I’m sure she can help you out. They seem to make special exceptions for those with training in a craft. There’s a beastcrafter boy that works with the Weyr’s beastcrafters during the day, and tailor that helps the lower caverns staff repair clothes and stuff. And the Weyr always needs healers.” He smiled reassuring at Corusek. “I only get the shaffit chores because I don’t have any craft skills but I can do a little of everything. Usually, they’ve got me running messages between the Weyr and the hold. You know, when there’s not a dragon available. Fire lizards can’t always be trusted after all.” He looked down at Bootstrap fondly. “The chores do help pass the time though…”

So, there was a possibility he could continue his healer training! Corusek let out a small smile and looked up at the smaller boy. "So, where do you think I could find the candidate master? I would like to speak to them as soon as possible." He said brushing a few loose hairs from his eyes. His face returned to a blank look soon after hearing Daart mention he felt had no craft skills. "I'm certain you have a hidden talent, everyone has a skill all of their own. I'm sure you will find yours soon enough."

He looked around the room, unsure of what else he could do or say. He was never really good at conversation, especially with someone he didn't really know. "Sorry." He said quickly, feeling it necessary to apologize for the silence he had brought about. "That they certainly do. " He said in response to the fact of chores helping to pass the time. "Just imagine, one day you'll have to be taking care of a giant version of bootstrap there." He said, trying to be nice. He had no idea if it worked.
