Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Big enough to fly fast, anyway. Maybe not so strong, but fast! When we're big enough to be flying, I will race you! Nysunth crouched low, his small shoulders wiggling up and down beneath his luminescent hide like those of a pouncing feline. It would be fun!

"Being good at compliments will serve to keep his neck unchewed when he speaks out of turn to a ranking dragon, I hope," the boy said earnestly, sighing. "I hope it'll keep MY neck unchewed as well. The compliments are genuine, though," he added hastily, not wanting the girl to think he had just said such things out of courtesy.

"I saw the spat earlier," he admitted when Bryn mentioned Izaxth biting. "Why'm I on the outskirts? Well, for the one thing, in case you haven't noticed, I'm not tremendously tall, so I get skipped over a bit in that regard." He looked up significantly at her, inviting her to notice the almost five inch discrepancy in their heights. "During the egg touching? I only touched the ones I could see over, which amounted to maybe four of them. My sister got all the leg in the family." He laughed in self deprecation, his Impression to Nysunth having knocked away all of the bitter derision he had once felt regarding his height. Reaching down (though not as far as even a sevenday ago, Faranth was his blue growing fast!) to pet Nysunth's neck, he grinned.

"The other reason being that I suppose getting noticed by folk wasn't all that important to me, really. It was getting noticed by a dragon that mattered, yeah?"

She Who Would Be Krogan
Trilla was a bit nervous about the exercise...but the dragonets going before her seemed to be taking on their tasks well enough, and she had no doubt about Edivith's ability to understand her. The little green stretched and bounced about a bit, eager to have her turn.

I will show them! I will! I will find my thing fastest of all!

"Well now's your chance, love. It's our turn." Trilla smiled at the enthusiasm with which Edivith responded, leaping forward into the room so abruptly she nearly tripped over her own feet. Then the woman waited for C'ric to tell her which item they'd be looking for.

So many things! Came Edivith's enthusiastic response from the other room, paired with an overwhelming, nearly dizzying succession of images of different objects.

Not yet, love. We have to find our thing, remember? Here is what it is. Trilla concentrated strongly on the sharp pattern that should be visible on the little scrap of cloth, projecting the mental image to her bonded with all the detail she could muster considering she didn't actually know what the cloth looked like, only the description of it.

Oh, OH! I see a black and white thing, is this it? the green bounded over to a small round object, ready to sieze it in her jaws.

No, love, that's a ball. What we're looking for is flat and wrinkly. Trilla sent the image again.

Oh there it is. It's not as fun as a ball...but it's our thing! The dragonet's momentary disappointment at being wrong the first time was eclipsed quickly by the joy of discovery and her rider's affirmation that she had indeed found the correct item. She gasped it in her teeth and came bouncing out of the room, almost dancing.

Oh, look, LOOK! Trilla, I have done it!

"Yes you have! I am so proud of you, Edivith!" Trilla crouched and hugged her dragon, who still had the cloth clutched between her teeth. Then she smiled at the other young weyrling riders even as Edivith waved the cloth at the other hatchlings with a fierce sort of pride.

L'del listened to C'ric's instructions eagerly. It was over a month since they'd Impressed and Xakoeth continued to surprise him every day. She was growing bigger and now came up to past his waist; at this rate she would be too big for her couch soon, L'del thought half-jokingly as he reached out to caress her headknobs. She thrummed happily and looked up at him.

They'd been practicing speaking mentally but it was still difficult and he was working on it. Xakoeth had no trouble but L'del had a hard time directing specific words and thoughts; he was more successful at making a general impression or emotion visible to her. Still, they were working on it, and they'd begun working on bonds in lessons. Like now.

L'del leaned against the wall and watched as dragonets one by one went into the next room and then emerged. There was a deal of celebration as the dragons emerged successfully over and over, and L'del began to get a sense of unease. What if they couldn't find the right object?

Don't be nervous. Xakoeth gently butted her head against L'del's stomach. What do I have to do?

L'del grinned in spite of himself. Xakoeth was always just so eager to please that he couldn't really be unhappy with himself when he was around to make him happy.

"We've got to-- oh, wait," L'del said as Edivith pranced back into the room and C'ric motioned for him to move forward.

Alright, let's try this, L'del though. You're going to have to go into the other room like the others already did, and find something for me.

Xakoeth cocked her head in confusion, but looking around the room at the dragonets who had already returned seemed to satisfy her.

Alright, L'del, she said happily and trotted out.

L'del took a deep breath to calm another flutter of nerves. It wasn't particularly frightening, but everybody else had done so well. What if he was the first to fail? What if Xakoeth couldn't figure it out; would everyone else think she was stupid? She wasn't, though, she was really smart! He looked up at C'ric and nodded once.

Xakoeth's voice came into his head. L'del? Could you tell me what I am looking for, maybe?

L'del slapped his forehead. Sorry, Xakoeth! He thought for a moment, trying to form a description of a bucket and water in his head. You know Water, right? You drink when you are thirsty.

Xakoeth took a moment to puzzle out the jumple of words, sensations, concept, and emotions he had sent. Finally, she replied, Water... Like you wash me with?

Yes! L'del sent a wave of affection to his dragon. Now, you'll find this water, and it will be in a bucket. Like the one that had meat in it, when you first Hatched!

Xakoeth was quiet, trying to think about this. Finally, she said, Meat? Is the water with the meat?

L'den shook his head, forgetting that she couldn't see. Not meat. Bucket. The bucket is a hard wooden container. Hard and wodden, maybe with a rope handle. Like this? He tried to imagine a picture of the bucket he was thinking of and was immediately rewarded with a sense of gratification from Xakoeth.

I know now! I think I see it! Is it this? Xakoeth responded immediately with an accompanying picture of what was probably the bucket she was supposed to be looking for; the sensation of getting a full image was so strange and startling that he didn't get a good impression of the scene, especially as it was just a glow-lit cavern.

Yes, that's it Xakoeth. L'del licked his lips and sent a wave of encouragement. Bring it out here.

Alright, Xahoeth said proudly, but then was hit by a wave of uncertainty. L'del wanted to go to her and comfort her and find out what was wrong, but he had to stay where he was. A sudden sensation of jolting shock and he tried to delve into her mind through their connection; although clumsy, he had a strong sense of confused surprise.

Xakoeth? What happened?

The grey took a moment before answering, I'm... not sure? But L'del, the water is not in the bucket anymore. Can I bring it anyway?

L'del bit his lip, and then said, Yes, I think you better. He waited impatiently until Xakoeth trotted out, dripping wet and dragging the bucket with her tail; she had clearly just upended it over herself.

Couldn't you carry it? He asked in surprise as he went over to her.

She recoiled slightly, eyes whirling yellow. I'm sorry! I didn't know how! It spilled!

L'del removed the bucket gently and patted her head. "It's alright, Xakoeth. No harm done. At least you brought the water back!" He grinned sheepishy and held out the bucket to C'ric.

"Well, sir, she brought back the bucket and the water just like I asked!" He grinned again and turned away, feeling slightly stupid but feeling like there wasn't much that could be done.

He found V'sili leaning against the wall scratching Epolith's headknobs. He grinned and leaned next to him. "Good job."
