Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Brantor stuck his head into the Records Room and peered around warily. He hadn't seen Lisenyth around on his way in, but he knew that on your average afternoon, the Weyrwoman should be around here working on something or another. Yes, perhaps it was surprising that he was looking for Rhyssone. Maybe he was just looking for trouble, but... There was no way he could keep working for his father in the Mine's Records. Everything there smelled bad, and he seemed to just keep getting hurt. He blew his chance with Vaioa's Lord Holder, too, but he hoped the Weyrwoman hadn't been warned about that incident just yet. Groping the heir at dinner wasn't a capital offense, right? Or was it...

"...Weyrwoman Rhyssone?"

"... and as our Weyr was too short on Queens to have a wing of them, Koruth and I spent our Falls helping to control injured dragons in the Infirmary. It is a shame I knew little of healing, because a gold's will does wonders in keeping dragons with hurt riders calm. Weyrwoman Ulira and her Joerth did the same, though they also coordinated between the wings and the reserves..."

"Weyrwoman Rhyssone?"

The unexpected noise jolted Rhyssone out of her study-induced trance, and she sighed for a moment before setting down the scroll. Learning about the Pass duties of ancient queenriders was a welcome escape from the pressure of the food shortage, and one with a legitimate claim to importance. But duty called, and she turned toward the door with a neutral expression on her face.

Brantor? What in Faranth's name was he doing here? She hadn't had anything to do with the ex-Candidate after talking to the weyrfolk had confirmed that he was shirking his duties and sleeping with anything that moved besides. She'd even heard rumors of him disgracing himself at the Hold, and had just been thankful that he wasn't associated with the Weyr any longer.

Rhys cleared her throat. "Did you need something?" It was a good thing Lisenyth wasn't here. She didn't know if the queen remembered who had touched her golden egg, but she didn't want to take that chance.

Brantor let a wide smile slip across his face. He stepped into the room, his hands going to adjust his scrollpack as he did so. The ex-candidate had his more usual (very stuffy) appearance, probably not how Rhyssone remembered him. He was neatly pressed from head to toe, meticulously clean and his hair neatly coiffed. The young man peered over his glasses at her a bit as he spoke.

"Oh, good morrow to you, Weyrwoman Rhyssone. I find you well, I hope? Lisenyth, too, of course, although I'm yet to see her... I just thought I might stop over and see if you might have use for another hand with the Records. I was a record keep at High Reaches for about four turns, you see. I know preservation and transcribing techniques, apart from my extensive vocabulary and skills in reading comprehension, which no doubt are a boon..."

He felt himself rambling, and cleared his throat a little before continuing. There was something genuine and almost desperate to the way he looked at her now which was distinctly lacking during their last conversation.

"It's just that I've been put to tending to whers. They're atrocious creatures, Weyrwoman, an affront to all senses. Scribe work is what I love, and it seems a shame waste such talent to sweeping up wher droppings, yes? I feel my mind withering into a senile husk of its former self even as we speak."
