Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Braen wasn't sure he'd put the word 'interesting' alongside falling over but he supposed she had a point. "A runnerbeast would startle, they seem to do that easily. Probably why we don't see many near the mine." He considered out loud. "They're useful creatures though." He looked at the Brown, lounging almost as if nothing had happened and the corner of his mouth crept up juuuuust a little. "So far they have certainly been very surprising, though I've not met many fact to face."

Grateful that the rider did not seem to find his fall a big deal, nor a reason to pick at him, he nodded along as she introduced herself. "Interesting name. Not one you hear about here much, did you transfer to Vaioa or?"

As she expanded a little on what appeared a fairly complex relationship between dragon and rider, Braen thought on just how little he knew about them all. Most riders seemed arrogant, or at least his father had thought so. He had little to do with them, though many didn't seem as hard working as the miner's, particularly when they were guarding the entrance. Even the Weyrlings wanted to explore rather than work it seemed. Still, Visani held a different air to most he had met, rather sensible and level headed. If her dragon's opinion were sound, and from her description it would be; though perhaps a little biased, she took her job seriously. It was certainly a perspective he could respect. "You have been perfectly amicable so far." He assured her a little awkwardly, unsure exactly how to word his meaning. "Not everyone would take the time to help someone who is lost. If you were as different as you say at first, it seems you have both changed a little and would be a better fit now." He shrugged. "I can't imagine it would be comfortable though, to be paired with someone so different minded; at least not at first. Dragons and their riders are always described as being very, together, with feelings, opinions and such. Hard to imagine a dragon and rider being very different, but still getting along."

As Emanth spoke again, Braen turned back to him, still reeling a little from the voice in his head. It was an odd experience, though far from unpleasant. It must be, interesting, for Weyrlings. Suddenly bombarded and your mind is never your own alone again. Would he really enjoy not having private thoughts? He doubted so, though no rider really seemed to mind this link they held with the impressive draconic creatures that graced Pern. "If you have the skill and work hard though, why should you not lead?" He looked confused, trying to fit this information in with his understanding. "Is there a large difference between a Bronze and a Brown besides size?" He couldn't fathom why someone with potential would be forced into a box simply due to dragon colour. "Is it the same for the other colours? Each one has it's place and they can't ever get past a certain point?" He asked, posing the question to both Emanth and Visani. This thought was rather unsettling to the Crafter, though his voice remained fairly calm as he listened curiously for an answer.

He felt he had missed something, because the next moment Visani was on the floor and Emanth seemed extremely amused that he had toppled her over now too. Braen's mouth curved juuuust a little again, though he did the woman the dignity of not laughing. Instead he cleared his throat, unsure if it would be wise to laugh at a Dragonrider at all, let alone one helping him. Instead, he extended his hand. "Dragons certainly keep people on their toes.......or, off them in this case." He said warmly. "At least you have an excuse for being on the floor." He reminded her, his face twitching slightly again and waiting to see if she would take the offer of help to stand.

Visani glared threateningly up at her dragon, "Emanth, really. Was that necessary?" she growled and swatted at his snout from her seat on the floor. Make me look like a fool why don't you infront of people. Yes that sounds like a lovely idea, especially when that person's dragon would spout any information at anyone, even if it was slightly personal! the mental tirade continued.

I made my point atleast. And he's only ONE person. Emanth utterly immune to it just continued to huff with laughter.

Visani grasped Braen's outstretched hand and tried her best to smother her irritation. "I'm glad he's not like me. Sure he's's annoying at times but then stuff like this would never happen and both of us would just be irritable all the time." she bapped Emanth's snout and he nosed her again almost hard enough to knock her off balance, she stumbled slightly but decided to just lean on his face. Now, if he really wanted to knock her over than he could, and he would make himself seem rude in the process.

"Now, As I was going to say before Emanth decided to act like a weyrling again. A rider's dragon color more or less determines their rank in some situations." she spoke more curtly than she had intended, "Though riding a lower ranked dragon has opportunities on its own. A brown or below tend to have jobs as weyrling or candidate masters or assistants. I've never heard of a bronzerider having the patience for dealing with young ones, likewise a the rider of a blue or green could never lead a wing because their dragon wouldn't have the endurance to fly an entire Fall."

A rider decides who they want to be, whether that is based off their dragon's color or not. Emanth spoke briefly but honestly, If someone is riding a blue or green than generally they weren't meant to lead a wing.

Though that really wasn't fair to the riders of the smaller dragons, sure they were more numerous but they made up the bulk of the weyr and happened to contain the most varied personalities and habits of probably all the people of Pern. "But blues and greens are also the fastest and most agile of all the dragons. Greens especially. If you ever get the chance to watch a green in flight, it's truly something to watch. Their riders are also probably the most interesting and friendly since they don't have to worry about making fools of themselves in front of everyone. So there's some measure of freedom that is lacking when someone impresses a higher ranking dragon."

She had never really considered what her life would be if she'd Impressed a green or blue. Emanth was Emanth and as long as he remained as such, personality wise (really he could turn purple, grow extra wings, and shrink to the size of a runnerbeast) Visani would still adore the easygoing brown beyond all reason. "I'm sorry Braen, we've completely distracted you from what you were supposed to be doing." Visi really hoped that the young miner wouldn't get in trouble because of her and Emanth yammering on about their day to day lives.

Helping the Brownrider to her feet, Braen fought the urge to smile. Her irritation was understandable, but it had been amusing. Still, it would not be a smart move, of that he was sure so instead he listened and nodded. "Blowing off steam is better than blowing up at one another." He said simply, it was, well, logical when you thought about it.

Watching her settle against Emanth's snout Braen was struck by the sheer size of the Brown again. He was so much larger than other dragon's he'd seen up close. Then again, he'd heard Kings and Queens were even bigger. He would have felt intimidated by them, truth be told; Emanth however, put him at ease and merely left him with a feeling of awe towards the creature.

As Visani explained more about Weyr social structure, Braen was quietly attentive. Her shift in mannerism hadn't phased him; he'd been tutored by Pertor on more than one occassion and the man was usually serious; almost to a fault. He settled in to listen, trying to commit as much as he could to memory. It became apparent dragons tended to fit with personalities that held similar goals; probably for good reason. Indeed, before he could voice this Emanth chipped in to give a very good reason indeed. Dragons it seemed, dictated much about Weyr society. To Braen it seemed restricting, but then if dragons and riders were well matched up perhaps they were fine with the arrangements. Still, Visani held visions of progression yet now, that was not possible. He didn't press the issue but he couldn't help but wonder whether that ever got annoying.

"I see. There is a reason for everything then, as it were." He said, carefully keeping the rest of his thoughts to himself. Pertor would tan his hide if he was rude or annoyed Weyrfolk he was sure.

As Visani continued he got the feeling his guess wasn't too far off the mark. The higher the rank the more restricted you were, but the more you could achieve. It seemed an awkward position to find yourself in. It seemed not everything sat well with Visani but the woman carried this off well and didn't seem to dwell on it too much. "I haven't seen the smaller dragons fly, much of my time is spent underground. Perhaps one day though......From what you've said, the responsibility lies with those who are more apt to make better decisions. So, while more restrictive, it would seem that it is only placed upon the shoulders of those who are able to cope with the expectations. From what I've seen so far as well, this has held true" He said with a polite nod and a twitch of his mouth again.

As she mentioned his task, Braen glanced towards the door and remembered the sack he'd been sent here to deliver. "It is no bother." He said, though he made his way over to the heavy bag and slung it over his shoulder once more. "It has been most enlightening and you have both been kind." He dipped his head respectfully to Emanth and then to Visani. "I can simply tell Pertor I have been broadening my education." He said rather matter-of-factly. "Still, I probably should get these tucked away. It has been a pleasure, Emanth. To meet you. Was there anything else you needed to do in here?" He asked, glancing to the brownrider.
