Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Nenyk looked at his little cot in the candidate barracks. He had more of a room back at the Hold then he did here. All he could hold claim to right now was the clothes he had brought. Even the bed and the chest he was currently using wasn't really his. After he impressed or left another candidate would use it. Honestly, though, Nenyk didn't mind the lack of material wealth. The reason for it far outweighed any want he had for...things. He still couldn't believe that he was even a candidate.

Nenyk folded his last bit of clothing that he had just recently washed and put it away. He had chores to do later, but he had a bit of free time right now. So he decided that he'd take a soak in the mutual heated pools. The warm water always felt so good. His muscles were sort of sore from cleaning out the herdbeast pens. He had always thought himself a lover of all animals, but he had to conclude that herdbeast were just downright dumb. They served their purpose and without them the dragons would be in a poor state.

The steam from the heated pool was amazing. Nenyk quickly shucked off his clothing and gently eased himself into the water. A small sigh of happiness escaped his lips. The water was intensely relaxing and Nenyk allowed himself to go up all the way to his chin. He could stay here all day if he was allowed to. It was nice having the place to himself for once. This was only his second time in the heated pool and the time before it was crowded with the other candidates. Nenyk wasn't a loner by any means, but it was nice to have the whole thing to himself.

Nenyk laid back and just let himself float in the warm water. His eyes were closed and he couldn't hear much since his ears were submerged under the water as well. It was nice to not have to do anything for the moment. Even the chores he had to do later didn't seem all that bad at the moment. Nenyk told himself he would have to take a soak here more often if it made him this calm and relaxed. Hopefully he wouldn't lose track of time and forget his chore, though.

Tavian had spent the morning tugging weeds out of various places in the weyrbowl. The group leader had been very clear--no greenery in the Weyr. He had no idea how the plants had managed to survive, between the general conditions of the desert and the recent sandstorm, but they were stubborn things. By the time the candidates were dismissed, he was covered in sand, and he decided to head straight to the water cavern.

After picking up his towel and soap from the barracks, he went to the bathing cavern. To his dismay, there was already someone else in the water. As an apprentice, Tavian had also shared quarters, and he hadn't enjoyed it at the Hall either. It hadn't helped that many of the other Smith apprentices were tall and burly, making him rather self-conscious about his scrawny build. Candidacy allowed for even less privacy, and unless he waited until late at night to bathe, he had to share...and then in the late hours, he ran more risk of encountering a canoodling couple.

It doesn't matter. It's just a bath, he told himself. He knew it was ridiculous to be nervous when he was just trying to get clean. The other person wasn't even paying attention. Tavian quickly stripped down, folding his clothes neatly by the side of the pool. He slipped quietly into the water, hoping that he wouldn't disturb his fellow bather.

Nenyk was happily oblivious that someone else had joined him in the warm waters of the bath. It was almost as if he could feel the stress and tension slowly seeping out of his sore, achy muscles. With his eyes being closed and his ears being under water he didn't hear anything. He was still floating on his back, barely kicking his feet and moving his arms to keep him moving around the pool. Since he wasn't paying attention, he didn't realize how close he was before he accidentally bumped into the other lad.

"Oh Faranth. I'm sorry. I didn't realize that anyone else was in the pool." Nenyk said immediately, giving the other boy a bit more space. He was a little bit perturbed that somehow he had missed the fact that someone had already been in here or that the boy had came in without him knowing it. Perhaps he should brush up on his perception, though he wasn't sure how one went about doing that.

Well, since he was here and the other boy was here he might as well introduce himself. After all there was no reason to be rude. "I don't think we've ever met before. My name is Nenyk. I'm from Vaoia Hold. Just got here not that long ago. I'm hoping to be able to stand at the next impression." He hoped he wasn't rambling. He did that sometimes when he was caught off guard.

Working in the Weyr was not a new thing for Samentha. She had, after all, grown up in this Weyr and had served in the kitchens for as long as she could remember. Her parents were, at least in the eyes of their daughter, very respectable as cooks and she had always been happy to support them-- by cleaning dishes for them, usually, or peeling the tubers and other things as they needed them.

On a typical work day, prior to candidacy, Samentha would finish up in the kitchens and then waste time entertaining the Weyr's brats, only to take her bath later when the baths were mostly unoccupied. Samentha was a bit embarrassed about her boyish body and not very comfortable bathing with other people, even if she had only ever known a life of bath sharing.

But it was different now. Samentha's schedule as a candidate was far more strict and she knew she needed to develop healthier sleeping patterns. So immediately upon wrapping up her duties, Samentha gathered the bathing necessities and headed off with the intention of bathing. She ruled out the gender specific girl's bath almost immediately; it looked busy and she wanted to be able to relax, not fight for privacy.

As she entered the mutual bathing chamber she almost ruled it out as well. Her cheeks flared red when she saw that it was not empty either. In fact, there were two boys there. Samentha had to bite her tongue and struggled not to turn on her heel and leave. Perhaps normally she could have. But the pool was still fairly quiet and there was no real reason to leave, other than her personal embarrassment.

Samentha loosened the bite on her tongue so that she could breath in.

Really. No reason to leave. It would just be silly. And it wasn't as if she had to talk to them. Or even look at them. They'd leave her in peace eventually. She was not about to give up her chance to take a lovely, soothing bath just because two boys were in the water first.

With this settled, she stripped down. As quickly as she could, actually, despite being really embarrassed. She failed to even make a sound. Her two second strip down was followed by her immediately stepping into the pool and sinking down to her chin. There was not even time to fold her clothes neatly like the others had, leaving a messy heap near the side of the pool.

Yes, she'd said that she would not even have to look at them, but Samentha backed herself into the closet substitute for a corner that she could find and watched the boys very carefully. She had no idea how to relax when she was the only girl in the mutual pool.

Nenyk was patiently waiting for a reply from the new boy when out of the corner of his eye he caught sight of someone else coming to join them in the mutual pool. They too slipped in very silently without hardly making a ripple in the water. He was a bit more set off guard with this new occupant than he was with seeing the boy. Nenyk wasn't very good around women in awkward situations and he certainly considered this to be an awkward situation, mutual pool or not.

Now Nenyk was torn. The girl had moved over to a corner and was still looking at them. A part of him just wanted to leave well enough alone and just let the girl enjoy her solitude if that was indeed what she wanted. However, if she was just shy and wanted to join in their conversation then he would feel bad for snubbing her. All in all he had to do what his nature wanted him to do and that was be friendly.

"Evening, m'lady. I hope our presence is not bothering you." Nenyk said to the girl. Technically they were there first, but if the girl would rather be alone in the mutual pool then he wouldn't mind leaving. He wanted to make sure that she knew they weren't going to bug her if she didn't want, but also if she wanted to join in any conversation they had then she was also welcome to.

Tavian froze as the other boy drifted towards him. He tried to inch away but that was difficult since he was already pressed up against the edge of the bath. "Er, sorry," he echoed Nenyk's apology. So much for going unnoticed. At least his fellow candidate seemed friendly and willing to talk, which would make things a little less awkward. Tavian was feeling so awkward himself that he didn't notice that Nenyk was rambling at all. "Nice to meet you. I'm Tavian. I came here from the SmithCraft Hall just after the last Hatching."

He looked up at the sound of a slight splash and saw that a girl had joined them. She had undressed so quietly that he hadn't even noticed her until now. Tavian just nodded in agreement with Nenyk's words. It sounded better than anything he could come up with.

Oh shard it. Was Samentha's original thought. She was already feeling awkward by being in the same water as them. Now one of them was talking to her! The embarrassed young women listened to him and then allowed an awkward moment or two of silence. These moments were spent thinking. Debating.

... Well. She had always heard it jokingly stated that naked bonding was the best bonding.

Might as well at least give them a chance.

"Not at all. You were here first. I'm the one intruding." She reminded him. Samentha tried to managed a smile to match his friendly offer of conversation. "Sorry. I can leave if you'd rather? I suppose two boys and one girl is an awkward equation..."
This last statement was joined with a nervous laugh.

"Well, I guess if we want to be technical, this is the mutual pool, so I guess it doesn't really matter which of us got here first. It's for all of us to share." That made sense, right? Well, he hoped it did anyways. Nenyk wasn't exactly the best person to make sense when he was in awkward situations.

"Tavian, it's a pleasure to meet you." He replied courteously to the boy. Both of them were keeping their fair share of distances from each other. It was rather silly, honestly, but with the strict candidate rules they had to make sure they were all on their best behaviors.

"No, please, you don't have to leave on account of us. I mean, yeah, I guess it is a bit awkward, but we all adults here. Er....we're at least suppose to act mature like adults. So surely we can share the same bathing pool." Even though he was trying to act mature and like it wasn't a big deal, Nenyk had yet to look directly at the girl.
