Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kymor has been distracted by cleaning out his canine's cage, in fact he hadn't even though of what could happen. The creature was trained after all, he wasn't about to go off and start trouble. Yet Kymor hadn't planed on his canine walking into another's candidate's room. Better yet one that disliked canines, not that Kymor knew at the time. Cain had gotten bored of staying in a room everyday, he was restless and needed to explore ever since Kymor became a candidate the canine had little time to spend with his master. Cain never whined or made a problem about being lefty alone, he was trained not to, but boredom was still allowed. Kymor was planning on curing his canine's boredom with a large bone from the kitchens, he just hadn't gotten around to the task.

When Kymor finally noticed that his canine had went missing he took haste to find it before a fellow candidate made a big deal about it. It took him a little to find the beast, he should have went right the first time, but no he had to go left. That was what took most of his time, once he passed the correct room he found his canine sniffing around a fellow boy's room. "Sorry about that, Cain here!" The canine's ears stood at the ready and he bounced over to his master's side not wanting to make Kymor upset. The boy had decided that now would be a good time to get to know some of the candidates. "Spending your free time in your room also? The names Kymor, you are?" He wasn't much of a friendly person but he did try. After all he didn't need the whole Weyr hating him.

Tavian was sitting cross-legged on his cot, his attention focused completely on the hide in front of him. He had taken some old, discarded hides from the archives. They had been scratched over several times, but they worked fine for his idle calculations. There was a pair of dice beside him, which he used not for games, but for choosing random numbers to multiply or divide. It was how he passed the time when he wasn't doing chores, attending lessons, or making failed attempts to get to know his fellow candidates.

The sound of snuffling caught his attention, and he looked up to see a canine wandering around his room. Tavian's eyes widened in surprise and a hint of fear. He had never liked canines. Maybe he'd had a bad experience with one as a baby, but whatever the cause, he felt anxious whenever there was an unfamiliar one near. He certainly didn't like the idea of one being in his room. "Nice doggie..." he said, pulling his knees up closer to his chest. He wasn't going to get off the cot, as if that would somehow protect him if the canine turned out to be mean.

In a few moments, the canine was followed by the boy that had to be his owner. Normally, an unfamiliar person entering his private space would have been just as much cause for concern, but right now he was grateful to be rescued from the canine. "You shouldn't let your pet wander the halls unattended," he said, not trying to be rude, merely stating a fact.

He uncurled and dropped his feet to the floor, standing up so he could properly greet the other boy. "I'm Tavian." He glanced at the number covered hides, wondering if the other candidate would think that was odd. "I was...writing in my journal." He gave Kymor an awkward smile.

"Yea, once again, sorry about that. He's trained and all, but after moving here I haven't even had time to settle myself let alone make sure my canine wasn't bored." It was the truth, it was troublesome that he was transferred from his home Weyr, just to have to be forced into spending all his time as a candidate. At least in Ista he got away with helping in the record room and in his spare time out exploring with his canine. Not here, he was stuck with chores all day, and the only free time was used up with feeding his canine and catching up on lost sleep. Not only could the boy eat but he could sleep, this was the kind of lad, that if left alone, could sleep fourteen candlemarks easily.

He nodded his head at the other boy making sure to remember his name. Kymor wasn't the best with names but he did pretty well for himself. "Ah writing, so you know how to scribe? I do too, though I don't write to keep a journal. I used to help out in the records room back in Ista. When I wasn't doing that I wrote notes on the surrounding around and caves that I've scouted, with Cain's help." He gave the canine a pat on the head, luckily the dog hadn't moved from his spot. This was good since Kymor did not need a fellow candidate complain about his pet, otherwise he would have to get rid of Cain earlier then he had planned.

"So what your writing? Notes or just your thoughts?" Kymor did respect the other lad by not making a move to see the skins, some people never liked having their writing read by others. Even Kymor was privet about who got to read his notes. Taking a step back he leaned back to get a look into the halls, good no one had been around to notice Cain wandering around on his own. With a sigh of relive he brought his attention back to Tavian.
