Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Okay, guys, we're doing this hatching a little bit differently than the last one to try out a new way of doing it. You'll hopefully like this way better!

We've randomized the list, so what you see is what you get. RP out your own hatching post, and you can give your firelizard whatever markings/coloration and personality you prefer~

Nugget x Jasper
Dirkallo - Bronze
Yvaine - Bronze

I'on - Brown
Gina - Brown
Aniese - Brown

Olayla - Blue
Jeselle - Blue
Tieler/Zane - Blue
(whichever of them you prefer)
Se'tian - Green
Mercer - Green
Leah - Green

Nugget lifted her head as the warm, egg-filled sand beneath her belly began to shift. There had been many times she had clutched in the pile of red sand beside the kitchen fireplace. Although many people had been curious about the tiny orbs as they hardened from the heat, the gold had only let her master count them. Eleven perfect hatchlings, sired by the bronze Jasper, were about to spill out into the world.

Breakfast was going on in the Dining Hall. Nugget could hear the ravenous crowd and the clatter of plates. She shrilled high above all the noise, a siren call to those who were waiting for this event. Considering how many Weyrfolk would already be there for breakfast, there would be plenty of people around to gather up and feed all of her new children.

In all her time at the Weyr this was the first flitt hatching Jeselle had managed to get into. It wasn't that she avoided hatchings. She'd spent turns and turns hoping for a flitt of her own. No, she just always managed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. During the last flitt hatching she'd been hard at work with chores. This time she and the rest of the candidates were eating breakfast.

Jeselle inched closer to the fireplace to get a better look at the eggs. Despite having never attended a flitt hatching before, these were not the first fire lizard eggs she'd seen. After her last failed attempt at Impression her mother had given her a little flitt egg to cheer her up. A little green, Sorah, hatched out of it. Although it was not as good as having a dragon of her own, Sorah was a joy.

The eggs were moving fiercely in their little bowl now. Gold Nugget, who had been guarding them closely, took a step away. Jeselle grinned, they were going to hatch soon. The candidate wiggled through the crowd. She had to get closer... just a little closer. All of the sudden she found she couldn't move. She was being pushed in by people all around. Obviously she wasn't the only one who wanted a flitt today.

Then she heard a crack and a snap. The eggs were hatching and she still wasn't close enough! Over the heads of the crowd she caught a glimpse of the first flitt to emerge. He was a little blue, and he seemd quite put out at hatching in the midst of such a crowd. He keened and looked from one to the other, unsure whose hand to take food from. Jeselle stretched her arm out above the crowd, waving a bit of meat she'd managed to snag earlier. "Over here!" she called and then, to her surprise, he did.

"Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow," she winced, carefully pulling her hand back through the crowd. The little blue had latched himself on and didn't seem to be letting go anytime soon. His little wings flapped as she pulled him to her chest, revealing streaks of lighter blue. On one shoulder he had a little spot of much darker blue. But all that didn't really matter, since he didn't seem to be letting go of her hand. She tried to pull him off, but his little claws dug in further.

She scooted back through the crowd, searching for help. Surely someone knew how to get rid of this clingy flitt. A table with a bowl of meat for the flitts loomed into view. The blue seemed to see it when she did because he finally decided to let go. He flew straight toward the bowl. Jeselle let out a little sigh of relief.

She decided she did want to keep this flitt, despite her previous annoyance with him. She picked up one piece of food and stuffed it in his mouth, but quickly pulled her hand away before he latched on again. A few flitt meals later she didn't pull away quite fast enough and suddenly he was clinging to her hand again. Jeselle groaned, "Briar. I think you'll be called Briar. Feeding you is like sticking my hand in a briar patch... Not really something I want to do again, so don't expect any more of this hand feeding, okay?"

Jasper had been watching over Nugget who was watching over the clutch. His babies. He chirped softly every few minutes, peaceful and happy. She'd even let him see them once! Perfect little mottled shells and quite a few of them too. Ola had taken over the care of his Cheeps since Nugget wouldn't let the little buggers near her. That was fine by him and plenty fine by Olayla who had been worried about not having a close enough bond to them that they might just fly off someday. They responded well to her and absolutely adored their time with Eyoith.

So when she heard the gold firelizard's call and then her bronze's call in return she was immensely happy, perhaps she'd get her bronze back and maybe she could even Impress one of his babies! She'd been close to the hearth thankfully and didn't have to fight for a place in the crowd. She sat on the edge of the hearth, if the last hatching where she'd impressed Jasper was anything to go by then there would be grabby hands and scared flitts. She'd try to keep them at bay the best she could, Jasper hopped down from his perch on top of the fireplace and settled next to her, she stroked a finger down his back. "I hope this attachment ends soon, I doubt you'll catch her the next time she rises."

I'on's brown Browncoat

I'on wasn't supposed to be here. It was a stroke of luck that allowed the aged bluerider to watch the firelizard hatching. He normally didn't get out of bed this late, but today he'd had a harder time moving his joints, which didn't seem to want to move properly. He was getting old, and he didn't want to believe it. That's probably why, when the firelizards started hatching, he felt compelled to stay and watch. Shards and shells, having an infant around the weyr would make his life so much more bearable. And so much harder.

It was Adonisth who, at least on a conscious level, sealed the deal. Though he was nowhere near I'on, the blue dragon easily picked up the vibes emanating from His and eagerly declared that I'on needed a firelizard. I'on had never had a pet. Keeping up with Adonisth's wounds, keeping his own body in good repair, was hard enough. But, at nearly ancient-Turns-old, I'on finally decided that it was time for him to maybe think about obtaining one.

The gold firelizard moved out of the way, much like a gold dragon would do when her clutch was hatching. And I'on watched, rapt with concentration. The first few to hatch were two blues. Then, almost immediately after, a brown and a green hatched. I'on didn't take much notice in the firelizards themselves as the hatching as a whole. The two blues had already gone to different people, and the green was quickly moving to two girls who looked to be twins.

Another green hatched, but, as was stated before, I'on simply wasn't thinking of bonding to a firelizard. It didn't take long for that thought process to unwind itself in his face. The brown firelizard picked himself up and quite awkwardly, as all babies are, flapped his boisterous way over to where I'on sat. Landing wetly on the table (and likely getting half of his egg goo into I'on's food), the brown immediately chomped down on the meat roll the old man had in his hand.

I'on felt a stab of acceptance roil through his stomach, and he looked contemplatively at the brown as it settled down to chew the meatroll. "Oh, that's how you'll be." He declared, pulled as much of the meatroll from the brown's mouth as he could. The brown was indignant, immediately crowing for more food, which I'on gave him, in smaller doses.

Thus content, I'on was allowed to view the brown in his somewhat unmoving stance . His underside and most of him was a nice pale tan color. But the underside of his wings and his tail were brown, a dark brown. He looked as if he were wearing a brown coat. "Well, at least you're not a girl, Browncoat." The man said, giving a small smile as he fed the little newborn another piece of the roll.

Leah's green Nevyne

Morning was one of the few times the twins sat and ate together. The meal was usually always rushed, because Andy had to get back to Eriardith and lessons. Perhaps if Leah had a wher, things would be different, too, but Pertor had told her to not hope for a wher any time in the near future, and Leah was doing just that. Not hoping... at least not too much. Nevertheless, the twin's topics of discussion were usually centered on those things: Eriardith, lessons, and whers. Today, luckily for Leah, it was on how much Eriardith ate.

"She doesn't eat half as much as I thought she would, but it's still quite a bit more than I would have previously thought she'd eat." Andy was pulling her fork through a meatroll, dismembering it as if it had had insides in the first place.

"I'd imagine she'd eat more as she grows." Leah put in, remembering her wher scroll. But whers didn't eat nearly as much as dragons, and she didn't think that they ate as much as dragons during the sevenday, either.

"Maybe it's a phase." Andy commented, though she laughed out, "She still eats more than you and I combined."

It was at that moment that Nugget's clutch decided to fully start hatching. The girls had taken no notice in the clutch, as it had been there for quite some time and they already had firelizards. Speaking of which, Auzie, Leah's blue, had settled his fat self into a large bowl of what she assumed was meat soup. He was downing the whole thing with such gusto that Andy's little green, Shenandoah, barely had enough time to slurp down a bite. The spoiled little blue was uncaring whether or not he hurt Doe's feelings, and he ignored any glare he received from Leah... like always.

That was when a green firelizard rudely interrupted Auzie's staring. Leah was sat laughing so hard she nearly blew the juice she was drinking out of her nose. Even Andy was laughing. The look on Auzie's face when she trompsed into his food was a look he would only give a few times in his lifetime... and it didn't fit his face at all.

What Leah felt next was surprising. The little green, Leah had thought she'd belonged to someone else, turned and Impressed herself to her. "Oh!" Was all Leah could say, and that had Andy stop chortling and looking at her.

"It Impressed you?" The girl asked, and Leah was giggling again. Andy continued. "I thought it was another person's firelizard!"

"Me, too! But I guess she's mine now! I need a name." Leah answered.

"Oh, no. I'm not naming her. That's your job."

"Fine." Leah said, and looked at the delicate-looking green firelizard. She was a nice forest-green color with almost neon green lines running down her limbs, side, and spine. Her nose and tail-tip, and one leg, were dipped in the neon green mixture, too. "Hmm. She looks like she'd have vines on her."

"Vine? That's a boring name."

"Nevyne?" Leah asked, wondering. Her sister snorted out another laugh, but the green looked up at her, her gently whirling eyes awash with color, and she knew she'd chosen a nice name. "Well, apparently she likes it!"

Andy looked at Nevyne for a moment, contemplatively, before giggling and standing. "Well, I guess this is where I say goodbye before one of those little buggers decides to find me a good Momma. Eri's probably waiting for me, anyway. Talk to you tonight!"

"Yeah, tonight." Leah said, and Andy left without another glance back. She knew how it was to Impress, even to a firelizard. Leah would be wondering about Nevyne for some time after this.

Se'tian had been ravenously eating so when Nugget called he nearly spit his breakfast all over Visani who had been partaking in her own pot of klah across from him. She frowned at him, "Well what are you waiting for? You've got to find a new way to tick off your dragon right?" she chided him. The greenrider chuckled and grabbed a handful of scraps from the table. Using his height to his advantage he made his way through the crowd, gently pushing the smaller weyrfolk aside. As much of a nice person as he was he wasn't about to let this opportunity go by.

He looked up to see a blue streak over his head and a squawk of pain as he latched onto someone's hand. Ah shards they were already breaking their shells! He squeezed through and found himself near enough the hearth where a dark haired girl and the bronze that had flown the queen were keeping the chaos to a minimum. A brown and a green found their way to waiting hands as he watched, waiting for one to find him acceptable. A small egg on the edge of the group was rocking violently but the young one inside seemed to be having trouble breaking her shell, a green snout poked through and whined pitifully. Despite the watching people and the bronze's sharp teeth a threat to whoever got too close before his children hatched, Se'tian couldn't help it, he reached out and took the egg into his huge hands and using the tips of his fingers broke away bits of the shell. It seemed to be a little thicker, no wonder the tiny hatchling couldn't get free! Quickly though a stunning sea-green hide was revealed with smaller bands of light lime green down her neck and body. She squealed in hunger, demanding that she be fed, so the greenrider dropped a bit of wherry into her open mouth. She sputtered for a second and then demanded more.

The tall man backed away from the crowd with his new charge. He found Visani still at the table, smiling hugely "ah so you got one did you. She's a beautiful little thing isn't she!" the brownrider cooed. Se'tian merely smiled and sat down, the baby green had already eaten all the scraps from his hand and he searched around for more. Her eyes slowly changed from red to the soft rainbows as she accepted her new bonded. "She is beautiful," he sighs and carefully cradles her against his warm chest whispering soft words and sending her soothing thoughts. Se'tian what do you have? the green hissed. "fardles." the greenrider whispered and carefully closed his mind away from his dragon lest she decide to try and scare the flitt away. Visani chuckled "Essathith find out?" Se'tian nodded. "Well she has to get over her dislike of firelizards now" he sighed. "I think I'm going to name her Ceres." Ceres cheeped softly, her eyelids carefully closing.

I bought an egg from the weyr store so I'm going to go ahead and hatch it here so I don't have to come up with some other way for it to appear.

Ola merely chuckled at the silly little things, they were quite adorable when they first hatched at least until they started demanding food every second of every day. None of the hatchlings had looked her way and she was as pleased as anything, she didn't need anymore flitts. The three she had were already plenty to take care of, more than plenty. As well behaved as they were most of the time it was tedious juggling everything and the bags under her eyes attested to this. Still she clutched a fistful of wherry meat. Just in case.

Jasper, a proud father trilled softly in his humming each time one of his babies broke through their shell. There were two medium sized eggs that were rocking violently, about the same size perhaps browns Ola mused. The hatchlings were all very pretty, each one with their unique colorings especially the blues and greens even some of the browns. Surprising since neither nugget nor Jasper had any markings to speak of. A large man had appeared and carefully reached across to lift away an egg who's occupant was obviously having difficulty escaping. Jasper kept other hands at bay, those who thought to try the same maneuver were thwarted.

Distracted for but a moment Olayla didn't notice when the two eggs she had been watching hatched, and only when one of them was prodding her hand trying to get the bits that she held did she notice. She opened her hand slowly and the little one wasted no time in tearing the pieces loose, that's when the other blue ran up to his brother and snatched away the scrap he'd just gotten loose. "Oh gosh you two, there's plenty of others out there to feed you!" It was no use the first one creeled piteously and grabbed another bit of meat. She tried to push them both away, aware of the stares and glares of those who were hopeful to impress. She could already hear the whispers around her, but there was nothing for it. They wouldn't be deterred. Finally she picked the two of them up and set them in her lap, stuffing them with whatever she could grab. A a few people who had seen what had happened were nice enough to hand her extra to feed their gaping maws.

The darker blue one, who had been the one to have his food stolen from him fell asleep first and she could finally get a good look at him. He had lighter patches on his wings that faded into teal and white speckles that accented his subdued tones. The lighter one on the other hand (literally) was still eating but had a beautiful deep sky blue color on his back and along his wings but down his tail and on the undersides of his wing membranes it faded to a white-blue. They were both gorgeous. Jasper hopped onto her lap and warbled excitedly, "Oh no, these are my babies now. You're not teaching them bad things like you did to the girls." she admonished him which he promptly ignored. "so should I name them after rocks like I did you?" the bronze merely kept humming as the last eggs hatched.

Klah. Klah. Must have klah. Gina was on a rampage through the kitchen. Why was there no klah right now? The kitchen workers kept trying to shoo her out, saying their supply had run out and that they were expecting a massive shipment with the next tithe later in the day. But that was just silly! A Weyr couldn’t just run out of klah, especially in the morning of all times!

The greenrider was in the middle of busily rummaging through one of the storage cabinets when she heard the shrill call of a Queen flitter. The Queen flitter.

A glance over her shoulder revealed that Nugget’s eggs on the hearth were shifting in the sands. Riders, weyrlings, candidates, weyrfolks, all manner of people were already gathering around with meat in their greedy hands. Gina snatched some out of the provided bowl and shouldered her way through to try her hand at catching the attention of one of the hatchlings.

A tiny egg at the very back of the clutch fell apart quietly, a dark colored little green tumbled onto the sand, chittering nervously. She creeled hungrily, looking around at the hands before her, all offering tidbits of food. So many choices!

Then out of the corner of her eye she saw something bright and shiny. One of her siblings was Hatching! As he emerged light radiated from the cracks in his shell, dazzling all those watching, including his green sister. When he appeared everyone was amazed! He was glowing a myriad of fluctuating neon rainbow colors, with inexplicable sparkles raining down about his perfectly clean, shiny hide. Nugget herself nearly fainted with pride.

The little green stared at her brother in wonderment and fright. Or was he her sister? Were they even related? Were they even the same species?

And then the bright rainbow thing turn to look at her and she gave a frightened little squeal, leaping from the hearth in her panic and splatted against fabric of some kind. Decidedly she clung to it with her tiny claws and continued keening in terror. Nothing was right in the world!

Mercer made a startled “ooph” sound when he felt the impact of a small, live thing land on the back of his shirt. Gently he reached back to remove the thing and immediately it latched onto his finger instead. “Hello there little lady.”

She was still squealing loudly and shaking as he poked a bit of meat into her mouth, making her shut up for a moment. “Dear Faranth… You sound like a siren.” He muttered as she began again after swallowing. “Look! I don’t see what’s so scary about your brother.” Mercer turned the tiny green toward the eggs where her brother was scrabbling around stealing meat from different hands without committing to any one hand.

Oh... There were no colors shining from his hide like before. Odd. But the green was too hungry to concern herself with it further and bit her new master’s hand to get his attention.

In the mean time, the brown was gleefully evading the hands of potential owners while simultaneously filling up on meat. Gina held out a piece to him knowing he would come after it, but didn’t let him take it. He wrestled with her for a moment, unaware of the hand coming up behind him.

“Gotcha, ya tramp!” Gina exclaimed, holding her squirming prize aloft.

No, that wasn't right. Frowning in concentration, a young man with a shock of blonde hair ran his fingers across the strings of the harp in his lap, reconstructing a ballad. "Yes," he muttered, smiling as the run was completed without a flaw this time. Finally, it had been ages since he'd started committing that tune to memory.

Dirkallo let his attention roam, now that he didn't need to focus on recalling notes. He was new to the Weyr, but nobody seemed to have a problem with him practicing his harp in the corner of the Dining Hall. Nobody had seemed to notice, really, except for a few glances as they walked past. That was fine with him; he had needed to finish memorizing the Teaching Songs so he pay more attention to the children as he taught. With that task out of the way, it seemed rather lonely in his corner.

As he hesitated, unsure of whether to approach somebody or not, the humming of firelizards filled the air. Suddenly, weyrfolk were everywhere, all but leaping over their benches to cluster at one end of the enormous room. Dirkallo followed cautiously, interested but wary of damaging his precious instrument in the jostling of the crowd. There was no way he'd leave it alone, that would be even riskier.

A thin crack signalled the beginning of the Hatching, and suddenly there were tiny firelizards everywhere; some needed to be coaxed into a new owner's hands while others scampered through the crowd following theird own whims. Dirk's breathing quickened; though he had grown up in Nerat, neither he nor his parents had been influential enough to be anywhere near a flit Hatching. Would it bear any resemblence to the also-unobserved dragon Hatchings? He set his harp down on an unattended table and slipped closer.

His blue eyes eagerly absorbed the details as each firelizard broke shell. there was a green who took off immediately, wailing; a brown who took his time making a choice until it was made for him. That was another question. Did firelizards choose like a dragon, or did they need to be caught?

One of the largest eggs cracked open then, spilling a sandy-colored firelizard onto the hearth. A brown, perhaps? No, there was more of a shine to it, though it definitely wasn't a gold. The firelizard didn't stay still for more than a moment; somebody thrust a handful of meat into its face and it scampered off through the crowd.

Dirk turned his head to follow its movements, hoping that it wouldn't get stepped on. He lost track of it for a moment, only to find it again as it hopped, chirping, onto a table. The one that was holding his harp.

"No no nononono!" the Harper gasped, shoving through people to get to his instrument. Firelizards were notorious pranksters, and that was his journeyman harp; he needed to be able to prove that it could last several Turns in good condition. But for the moment, the firelizard was only curious.

Reassured that his harp wasn't in any danger, Dirk approached more slowly, taking a good look at the flit. On a longer inspection, he seemed to be a very pale bronze. A line of true bronze ran up his spine before splitting at the shoulders and coming down his chest as two. His forelegs were dark up to the elbow; his hind just short of the ankle. He regarded the harp with a curious twist to his neck, reaching forward slowly to bat at a string.

The gentle noise it made seemed to encourage him. He snaked his head in closer and gave it a good tug. Interesting! The bronze flinched as a shadow crossed him, and his next attempt at plucking the string had more teeth in it than it should have. The stretched gut snapped with an unmusical twang, snapping the flitt soundly across the muzzle.

With an exclamation, Dirkallo dove in, seizing the firelizard in one hand and the harp in the other. Well, the harp didn't seem too bad; it would need a new string, but there was plenty of gut to be had. He turned his attention to the firelizard.

The bronze was rubbing at his nose anxiously, wailing. That had hurt! And his tummy hurt because he was hungry! He creeled, lifting his head to look into a pair of blue eyes and silently begged for the human holding him to make it all better.

"Oh." He hadn't expected that. Well, it sort of was his fault; if he'd chased the firelizard away in the first place, it wouldn't have snapped the string. "All right then, let me see... that's not so bad. I'll get you some numbweed, but food first. You just hatched, after all!"

The bronze snuffled, slightly reassured by the noises the two-leg was making. He seemed nice anyway. And oh. Oh oh oh food! He snatched the scrap of meat as son as it came within reach. All was right with the world now, so far as he was concerned. His nose still hurt, but he had food!

Dirk chuckled, poking another strip of meat within reach. "All right then, what to name you? I've got to call you something..." A good long name, in case he got in trouble. "Arkimidez. That'll do. Here, Arki, let's find some numbweed."

It was too early in the morning for Aniese to be cheerful. The girl regularly rose this early, but there were some times she preferred to lie in for a bit, and this morning would have been one of those mornings.

Since her arrival alongside her parents two days ago, the Weyr grapevine had been a frenzy of whispers. Everywhere she went, curious stares followed her. The Weyr knew that if the guests of the Hatching arrived, the Hatching itself would be not long behind. It was as if her presence was linked to the hatching itself. Aniese didn't know how the eggs knew when to hatch, but if they had any sense they'd hatch today. She was tired of being avoided and watched from a distance; it put her in a bad mood.

She moodily stirred at her lumpy porridge, occasionally eating a spoonful before returning to her own thoughts. Being in the Weyr was an entirely different experience than she'd expected initially... She shook her head and looked up, gazing around the Hall with an expression of aloofness.

A shrill cry broke her performance, and Aniese whipped her head around to see what caused the shrill noise. It was apparently a firelizard, on the hearth just off her table. Aniese watched with interest as the breakfasters all hurried to locate meat and formed a loose semi-circle around the hearth. Aniese was placed somewhere in the center of this group.

Before she had figured out what happened, the firelizards burst out of the eggs she hadn't seen at first, and began wandering outward from the hearth, creeling hungrily. Buckets of meat were now stationed along the crowd.

Aniese continued to watch with interest, though she ate her own breakfast as well, absent-mindedly. It was only when there was a quiet thump on the table and some scrabbling that Aniese looked about.

A little brown firelizard was crawling along the table, toward a small bucket of meat that someone had set nearby. He was very dark in color, with dark green spots bathing his tail and forearms. Aniese watched the creature with more intent interest. Apparently it had gotten lost in the feet of the crowd, and as she looked around the room quickly, realized that nobody else saw the firelizard.

Feeling daring and almost exhilarated, as though she was doing something she wasn't supposed to be doing, Aniese watched the little brown closely. He hurried over to the bucket and struggled to get at the delicious smelling morsels within. Finally, with an exasperated hop, he had scaled the bowl and balanced precariously on the rim. Then, as he reached into the bucket, the whole thing overturned.

Aniese jumped a little bit at the sudden noise, but another quick glance around showed her that the crowd still had uninterrupted interest on the hearth. Cautiously, Aniese reached over to the bucket and righted it.

The brown was clinging to the rim still, creeling angrily and anxiously as his eyes whirled a bright yellow. Aniese frowned at it.

"Well, it's not all that hard," she scolded it. "Here." Aniese plucked a chunk of meat from under the brown's wing and held it to the brown's face.

The firelizard looked up at her suspiciously, but seemed to be unwilling to move. Finally, after a ginger sniff, he gobbled the whole thing down almost too fast for Aniese to see.

"Well." She frowned as he chirped at her, and she had the sudden impression that he was starving. "You're sitting on all the food, why don't you just eat it?"

But the Brown wouldn't move from his position atop the mound of meat, clinging still to the lip of the bucket.

"Alright," Aniese sighed in exasperation. "Here you are." She fished out more of the meat and fed it to the brown.

The lizard began to eat the offered morsels with increasing confidence, and after some time, relinquished his hold on the bucket and crawled out, toward Aniese. He blinked up sleepily at her and then curled up next to her hand, where it rested against the forgotten bowl of porridge.

Aniese looked at it for a moment, feeling dumbfounded, and then began to finish her breakfast very carefully, trying to ignore the small feeling of happy warmth spreading through her.
