Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Lindell grinned as he shifted on the bench; the water rippled slightly at the disturbance. It felt good to ease out the aches of days and days of chores. "I didn't make many pieces like that," he confessed. "We just did basic tanning on pieces of leather. I'd have learned to fit the leather and shape it and all as a senior apprentice, but I wasn't that far along yet." He couldn't quite stop his smile even as he lifted his hands out of the water to show Senyrae. They were rough, and slightly discolored. "I did enjoy what I did, but all the dyes and treatments we used started to take a toll." He grinned again, self-consciously. "If I had begun learning the more complex techniques, maybe I would have learned how to deal with my hands, too."

He shrugged. "There were a lot of us apprentices, to be honest. I don't recognize the name-- I'm just not the best at remembering them-- but I do remember faces very well, so you'll have to point him out to be sometime. I'll probably recognize him."

He nodded, half-awestruck, at her story. He could hum OK but his singing was awful, and he didn't pick up instruments ever; he lacked any talent with them. "It's good to find something you're naturally good at. And that you enjoy. Being in the Harper hall would be so interesting..." His voice turned slightly wistful, then he grimaced jokingly. "I'd never trade it for a trip to the Weyr, though. Do you know, when I was searched, he said they needed me? Nobody has said that to me before. It's so amazing to know that we'll go from the lowest people in here, basically drudges, to people the whole planet will rely on! Dragonriders!" He chuckled, half-amazed at the very idea. After the first day of his search, he hadn't given much more thought to what it would mean if he succeeded.

"Too old?" Lindell shot Senyrae a quizzical look. "Oh, you do think you'll actually Impress, don't you? I mean, you've been around dragons for your whole life! You said it yourself! Who would be a better choice than you? You already know what to do!"

"I see," Senyrae answered. It was a liable truth for someone as young as him. "But still! It must be amazing to do some of the stuff you're able to do. I couldn't do that even if I tried." His hand caught her eys as Lindell rose it out of the water. It was a slightly darker color than the rest of his palm, and clearly roughened up from all the leatherwork he had to deal with. Unconsciously she took his hand into her own, feeling the difference between his hardened palm and her softer fingers. "It's not that bad. It shows that you're a hard worker, and that's a good thing. Maybe you'll Impress a brown because of it. Maybe even a bronze!" She grinned up at Lindell, hoping he would Impress alongside her.

Lindell's words had her smile wider in glee. He was such a sweetheart, and his words had Senyrae enjoy her little hobby even more. Even if the appreciation was more fascination. "Definitely. I've met a few people here who are from Harper Hall and they say it's a lot of hard work. But in the end it's worth it." Wistfully she sighed. To be a dragonrider or a Harper? It was a tough choice, but she still had time. Even if it was close to limited to a few turns left.

Lindell had his mind set, it appeared. It was an odd choice of words he used to explain the experience though. "Really? I think everyone has a chance to be needed, though. Not just dragonriders. I mean, your family makes the saddles and clothes we use to help us against Thread. And we have the cooks here that help feed us and things like that." Being a dragonrider was an honor. But everyone else was needed as well. "Everyone has a purpose. Believe me, if I don't Impress and perhaps go off to be a Harper, I'll be happy doing what I do."

He did have a point. But if she was around dragonriders almost her whole life that it was almost as natural as breathing, why was she still here? "I suppose. I don't know exactly everything yet. But I know enough. We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?"

Lindell smiled at Senyrae, glad that she seemed to be cheerful again. "A brwn or a bronze? Well, I know that's the... typical choice for boys, but..." He considered his words carefully for a moment. "I think it could be nice to have one of the smaller colors. I did get to ride on Airith earlier, you know? And she was so fast. She was smaller than the other bronze, I think his name was Tytoth-- but she was the fastest one out there. And that was really... Well, I don't think it was so bad." He grinned self-consciously. He hadn't been in the Weyr for long, but he knew that it was normal for boys to dream after large dragons, just like it was normal for girls to dream about the golds. There was just something about the smaller dragons that seemed a bit more.. comfortable to him.

He nodded, though somewhat reluctantly. "I guess what I mean is that its a big change. No matter where you go, you'll probably be useful to someone. Maybe to a lot of people. But life here is so different from life back at the Hold, or even the Hall. I guess I'm just not used to it." He shrugged apologetically. He wasn't that eloquent to begin with, and this was hard to explain.

He grinned back at her sudden reluctance. "Wait and see isn't so bad. Even if you don't know everything-- I couldn't have told you what Impression was before I got Ivy, and even now I still couldn't-- and I hear that Dragon Impression is even different from that-- but there's so much possibility. You never know what might happen. At least, something more likely to happen here than back home. And you wouldn't be here if you didn't want it, right?" Lindell hadn't been sure at first if he actually wanted it. Now that he had been here for a time, he knew he could never go back without feeling like he'd lost such an important part of who he could have been.
