Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

To Lindell, who had grown up in Vaioa Hold, the springtime weather wasn't unbearable. Even now, when summer was approaching and it was getting hotter, he found the nighttime to be rather cool as the rocks let off all the days' heat and the air grew degrees colder.

The day had been almost unbearably exciting. Lindell hadn't ever ridden a dragon before, and the chance to do so had been incredible... If that was what being a dragonrider would be like, he thought wistfully, then he'd Stand until either he Impressed or was sent back to the Tannerhall.

The soaking pools at the back of the barracks were empty tonight, and Lindell thought that many of the candidates must be in the common area, discussing things like the day's lesson. At that moment, though, Lindell wanted to reflect on his memories of the event, which was extremely uncharacteristic of him. He always wanted to be in the center of commotion; but tonight he thought he could do with a little break. Plus, he had slept a little funny the night before, and a soak would help his muscles relax a bit. Lindell leaned back against the stone ledge as the warm water lapped around his torso.

Today's events had been wonderful for Senyrae. She couldn't remember the last time she flew on a dragon, not since she had transferred here to Vaioa. Everyone had been ecstatic about the whole idea, even the ones that didn't particularly enjoy the heights at first.

The rest of the candidates had housed themselves in the common room, talking about their experiences on the dragons. Growing bored, Senyrae bade everyone good night, heading back to her room and grabbing her towel before going to the public pools. Hey, even she wanted some time to herself, no matter how much of her day was with the candidates.

Surprisingly, it seemed she was not the only one with the same idea. A boy had made himself comfortable in the heated waters, looking more content with the silence that permeated the pools. So much for being by herself.

Setting her towel aside, Senyrae found a spot to rest herself before acknowledging the stranger. "Wanting to get away from all the ruckus?" She grinned, the warmth calming her mind and soothing her muscles. "Can't say I blame you. Usually I'd be out there with them, but I felt like having some time to relax."

Lindell did not hear Senyrae slip in, as she was quiet, so he was a little surprised to see her when she spoke. He covered it up quickly, looking at her passively before nodding. In his short time at the Weyr he hadn't met any of the candidates on a first-name basis, simply gotten to know them by their names. He had seen Senyrae around before, privately thinking of her as "the little squirt." Although he himself wasn't that tall and he wasn't unused to most of his friends and fellow apprentices being taller than him, it was rare for him to find someone that much shorter than him. She wasn't the only short one; he'd seen others... But she stood out much more in his mind.

"Yeah," he replied, smiling in a very languid and carefree manner. The heated pools felt so nice; although he thought he might not have time for this sort of careless relaxation every day, he knew he would be returning on his next free evening. Used to hard work at the Tannerhall, he hadn't realized how tense he was getting from the new lifestyle. It wasn't that being a candidate was particularly hard, exactly, but it was a change that would take some getting used to. "I like hanging out with all them but tonight I just... wanted a little break." He shrugged, almost defensively, and then smiled again. "I'm Lindell, by the way. Fairly new here."

Senyrae laughed. "Yes, well. Sometimes you just need some time alone once in a while. Usually I would hang out and join them out there, but I like peace and quiet too from time to time." Gale poofed off from between, chittering to his pet and splashing around in the water. "There you are, Gale! Were you out bugging the herdbeasts again? How many times have I told you not to go over there?" He ignored her, enjoying the pool water as he hummed in glee with the warmth on his hide. Smiling sheepishly, she said, "Sorry, he's a little rascal he is. He likes to come here with me every once in a while." The blue floated on the water, keen to enjoy the warmth that seeped into him from the water.

"Ah, Lindell! Nice to meet you! I'm Senyrae, and this here is Gale." Senyrae grinned, watching her flit nosy about with a hint of laughter in her eyes. "Fairly new here too, huh?" She stretched her arms above her head, satisfied to feel a crack in her neck. Much better. "Well, Vaioa is a nice place. Where are you from?" she questioned curiously.

"I just transfered here. I'm from Ista, still a little new here myself. Are you holding up to the heat here at least?" Senyrae looked over the lad, curious as to who he was since they never really talked before.

Lindell grinned as Gale appeared from /between/ and joined his owner in the pool, then nodded suddenly. "Oh!" That's where he'd seen her before! "Yeah, actually, at that hatching... I got a green, myself!" He indicated Gale. He'd been at the same Firelizard hatching that Senyrae had been; that was one of the reasons she looked so familiar... Aside from seeing her face, among the other candidates' faces, every day in the barracks.

Ivy, no doubt, would be hiding in his cot where there was no chance of meeting anyone.

"Senyrae, huh?" He tried the name out and grinned at the foreign sound on his tongue. "Well, nice t'meet you. I'm from Vaioa Hold myself, so I didn't even get to fly a dragon into the Weyr when I got Searched. Today's lesson was the first time I really rode one." He smiled wistfully. "Oh, yeah, since I lived here my whole life the heat's no problem for me. How about Ista? It's probably a little like this?"

Senyrae never had a good memory, but she faintly remembered seeing a boy walk out of the kitchens with a green on his shoulders not long after her. Oh. Oh! Yes, that was him! Why hadn't she recognized him before? "Yes, now I remember! You were standing somewhere up front, and you Impressed that dark greeen flit. Poor dear looked so scared." Gale blinked curiously at Lindell, as if trying to recollect the event him and his sister had shared in with their pets.

Lindell appeared to be a nice boy, one of which Senyrae saw she could easily become friends with. "Nice to meet you, too." She nodded her head in understanding. "Ah, Vaioa Hold, eh? I've never really been there, so I don't know what it's like." The girl grinned in recollection of today's lesson. "It sure was. I'm weyrbred, but I've never really had much to do with flying. My mom would sometimes let me ride Ceriath, her green, but that was about it. Did you enjoy it, at least?" Some got a little discouraged with the effort of being up so high. Not her, though. She loved it.

Senyrae shook her head at his question. "A little, but it certaintly isn't this hot. I always thought Ista was the worst during the spring and summer. But Vaioa has that beat already." Gale splashed her with his wings, and the candidate smirked. "You little sneak." She splayed a wave of water over the flit, and he squawked in annoyance. Scrambling up the rim, he settled himself on the ground, but not without a glare to his owner.

"So, the hold, huh? Did you happen to do a craft back home? It seems interesting, honestly." Senyrae had never adopted up a craft, even if the sound of music from the Harpers made her daydream.

Lindell laughed at Senyrae's version of events. "Scared is one way to put it," he chuckled. Little coward was more accurate, except perhaps too mean-spirited. Really she was just somehow enormously, debilitatingly shy... He grinned again. "Yeah she's terrified around strangers, took a bit to warm up to me and I think seeing so many people when she hatched was... a bit of a shock," he explained. "She hasn't improved much. It'll take a while for her to warm up to the rest of the candidates. I have hope, though," he said offhandedly. "If we see everyone enough, she might get used to them. Wow, back at the Hall there were a few lizards, and none of them were ever as hidey as Ivy is," he muttered, half to himself.

At her next words, Lindell gasped. "Your mom is a greenrider?" He said enviously. "You've been around dragons forever, then! I think they're amazing! I mean," he amended, "once I realized that they wouldn't eat me." He grinned sheepishly. "To be honest, flying was really great, but I just love meeting all them. They're all so different, you know? Math, the dark blue at the lesson today? He Searched me. He was so energetic, lively. Airith, the green I rode today, was so cheerful it was... contagions." He grinned. "And Tytoth..." He stopped suddenly, realizing he was babbling, and smiled sheepishly at her again. "Sorry. It's just, I've lived in Vaioa Hold my whole life, you know? It's not far from here. On most days, you can sort of see it, in the distance." It wasn't a comfortable walk, since the distance was vast after all, but there was a direct path across the crater floor that connected them. "So I've sort of seen dragons before... from a distance... And it's like, suddenly, this huge blue lands and I get Searched. Why suddenly? I've been here forever. Why not earlier? Why now? It just seems like luck or chance. How do I even know if I'll Impress?" He sighed. "If your mom was a rider, I bet you'll Impress, no problem," he said, and there was again a hint of good-natured envy in his voice.

He grinned at Gale's antics; he was so different from Ivy, and much bolder too. If Ivy had been here she'd have vanished the minute Senyrae came into the room. "Oh yeah," he answered her. "Vaioa has its own Tannercraft Hall, so that's where I went, when I was old enough. I was an apprentice." He grinned at her. But, much as he loved it, he might rather have traded his childhood for Senyrae's. To be surrounded by dragons...

The girl frowned as Lindell described what his flit had been through. "Aw, poor dear! Maybe she just needs a little nudge in the right direction." Gale chirped at the boy as if in agreement. Senyrae smiled. "Gale could use a friend besides Barron all the time. The little brown's such a sourpuss to him. Maybe we should get them together sometime!" She nodded, enthused by her idea. "Gale could definitely show her what she's missing. He loves people as much as he loves food." Gale nudged into Lindell's palm for a scratch, proving her statement.

Lindell's gasp had Senyrae blink stupidly. Sure, she had a different life than most would be able to dream. "Well, yes-" She was cut off as Lindell spouted off more words, and she had to smile. Enthusiastic one he was. Guess she was so used to her lifestyle the candidate didn't think it anything special. Then again, he was Holdfolk. And from a tiny Hold, no less.

Laughing, she replied, "Honestly, it isn't all that special. Being a weyrbrat almost always meant your parents never had time for you, and you were left at the Creche with the other kids. Some didn't really know their parents at all. I was just lucky my mom and dad wanted to be in my life. Most riders give that up because of what being a dragonrider entitled." She dipped her finger in the water, letting the drops fall to form rings on its surface. So much for her good mood. But she would hate to rain on Lindell's parade. "It certaintly had its perks, though. And Math Searched you? He's such a sweetheart. You sure got lucky."

She cringed at the word Impress, nearly failing in hiding the sadness in her eyes.. Such a simple term, it seemed. Harmless. But to Senyrae it meant more guilt than she had ever experienced for as long as she could remember in her candidacy. If only it were that simple. But when had life ever been simple for her?

She covered up the sadness for another day. Another time. "Wow, that actually sounds really neat! I've never been able to have a craft myself. It must be nice to do something you like. If I were to do a craft, though, I would like to be a harper. My dad said I always had a nice voice."

"Oh." Lindell frowned thoughtfully, then smiled indulgently. "I dunno, yeah! We'll have to try it sometime." He privately thought that Ivy would be scared senseless if Gale approached her or even looked at her, but well, it was worth a shot. And it wold probably be good to get Ivy a bit better socialized, in all honesty. Lindell smiled at the blue firelizard, skritching him along his eyeridges and neck like Iy liked. "Next time we have free time..." He smiled vaguely at the idea. If nothing else, it would cause a little bit of excitement. Life around Vaioa was never boring...

"Oh." Lindell watched Senyrae's face fall slightly. Well, being a Weyrbrat sounded a lot lonelier than he'd ever taken into account before... Without parents, that was. Lindell couldn't imagine a childhood without his parents and sobered slightly. It'd be something to think about, anyway. Dragonriders were awfully busy, taking care of their dragons and in wing drills. And Sta'tis had said Thread would be coming again, in the winter. Once that started, riders would be even busier.

Still, to someone who had been raised in a Hold, it was almost weird to think about putting Threadfighting above family. Of course if he looked at it in a purely rational manner, it made sense... But the conservative part of him didn't understand it yet.

And then there were still all the dragons. Surely she'd seen all different dragons, since she had lived there for so long. Maybe it was a tradeoff. He couldn't think about it any more; he was starting to get muddled.

He looked up in time to see her sad expression, but after only a moment she changed the topic cheerfully. He shook it off; maybe he'd said something without realizing it, but she seemed to be OK.

Lindell exclaimed again, eyes getting wide. "A harper! really!" he grinned self-consciously. "Being at the Tannerhall was neat, because it was something I was good at... and I felt like I could finally have something worth doing." He grinned again, almost self-deprecating. "But a harper, wow! That'd be really neat! So can you sing?"

Senyrae grinned at Lindell. Thank Faranth he didn't try to pry into her personal business. The less her new friend knew, the better.

"You'll have to show me some of the stuff you made sometime! Doesn't someone else here have an apprenticeship as a Tannercrafter?" She snapped her fingers, trying to recall the name of the person. It was on the tip of her tongue. "Um... Clayson? No, no... Uh, Cla... Clan... Clannsen! That was it, Clannsen!" Senyrae smiled widely. "You know, tall and skinny, with freckles? Bushy brown hair! I think I remember him telling me once he was a Tannercrafter. Perhaps you knew him before you came here." The poor lad looked ready to drop dead when she casually said hi to him, though. Must have been shy.

The girl absolutely loved music. It all began back when she had first Impressed Barron, and the little dear decided to pop in class one day when the Harpers were practicing. He got so enthralled he started to sing along, at least, as much as a flit could sing. Senyrae couldn't help it, and after a while she joined in. It was infectious, and she eventually started to sing when she felt no one was looking.

But her secret certainly hadn't fallen on deaf ears. And lo and behold, Ceriath soon found out about it and told her mom. Suffice it to say, Senyrae never stopped once of being praised by her friends when she did.

"I do sing a little bit," she complied to answer. "Mostly when no one's around, though. My family and friends did say I have nice voice, however." The candidate shrugged. "I don't know... Guess it just came naturally to me." A blush lighted on her features in and embarrassed fit. "Probably not gonna hear me anytime soon, though. If I do happen to Impress sometime before I get too old," -which was highly unlikely- "then I won't have time to be a Harper."
