Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

She had never been happier, in a long time, to get out of an uncomfortable situation. The greenrider that had brought her to Vaioa from Big Bay Hold had unintentionally given the poor girl quite a scare. His green had decided to try and make the flight enjoyable by launching into the air, and performing simple aerial manoeuvres so that the girl would be awed by her. It was only until the girl couldn’t even answer his questions, and had frozen up completely, that he understood and bade his green to stop. The flight from there on in was steady, though the cold of /between/ had her wishing for the warmth of a blanket back home. She was always cold, even in comfortably warm weather. Unless it was hot, it didn’t much suit her temperature needs. Topped off with her persona some might think her sickly.

The green spiralled down into the Weyr bowl, leaning on a forward angle. The green’s rider, set behind her, was all the more closer then. She could feel the air deplete from her lungs, a sure panic attack coming on. She wanted him to move away, move far away. He was too close! Far too close! And then they had landed, and he was assisting her off. She could barely look up at him, despite her knowing him to be kind from when he’d spoken to her parents. She felt violated, and wanted to be able to seek out her room. He handed her the possessions he’d had strapped in safely. Two bags, both fairly light. She muttered thanks, her mind on the fritz until he’d walked off silently and his green had left to the ledge above. She turned and ran, not sure why she was running exactly. The Weyr bowl was cramped with people and after what had just happened she felt incredibly nervous. There were so many dragons in the bowl, so large and intimidating. She bit down on her lip, harder than she’d intended. She cut into it, not drawing much blood. She sucked on the wound, keeping pace.

She’d almost made it across when she tripped over her own foot and fell, both of the bags that were being carried in either hand flying across to the corridor. Her landing hadn’t been very... sound. She didn’t move for a moment, just rolled over and stared up at the sky. Great. This was a clear indication of how her time here was going to go. When tears sprang up in her eyes she bit them back, drawing more blood from her lip, again on accident. She’d come here to make her foster parents proud, but why hadn’t she just been truthful and told them she wanted to stay home? Home was safe, here wasn’t at all safe. She didn’t move, putting a knee up while she contemplated what she’d gotten herself into. Her dark wavy hair had sneaked its way into her mouth. She shot a hand up to remove her hair from her mouth, and face, eyes narrowed in irritation. Then she was kicking her legs like a child having a tantrum, but it didn’t take her long to stop having a fit. She lay there limply, head resting to the side, arms folded over her stomach, both legs up now.

It’s not like she expected someone to come and pick her up out of this nightmare. It wasn’t even bad enough to be called a nightmare, not really. Well, not to normal people. This was supposed to be one of the greatest privileges someone like her could ever hope for. Becoming a dragonrider was... it was... You don’t know the first thing about dragonriding. Her books hadn’t told her much about it, it was something you had to learn about in a hands-on experience type of way. She was the least experienced girl on all of Pern, in just about every way. She’d finally come to terms with it in the past turn, and now this. What did people want from her? Her face was wet by this time, the salty liquid having run right over her lips, and into her small cut, providing a stinging sensation in her mouth.

It was hot in the Weyr bowl but today she liked the heat. So did her little companion, a brown firelizard whose name she had figured out was Klah. Heat could be good and it was better than cold. She did not think she would like cold. Even if she couldn't remember what cold was like, it sounded not nice. She stared at the reddish sand, watching the slight breeze blow the granules, so tiny and so many, across the ground at her feet. She liked sand. When it got wet you could make nice things from it. Maybe she would go find some water and make the sand wet. Klah gave a chirrup, and Cayden was no longer looking at the sand. Instead, she was looking at a girl, coming in her direction. Then the girl fell down.

Cayden knew that falling down hurt and that probably in the very least it didn't feel good. So without further ado, she began walking until she reached the girl. Before she did, the girl had sat up, and then her legs began kicking out. Not good. Maybe she was having a seizure. Not good at all. She walked faster, but the girl flopped back and her legs stopped kicking. Was that not good, either? She reached the girl who was now flat on her back, and then leaned over her, inspecting her carefully to see if there was any sign of injuries. She didn't look very hurt. But her eyes were wet. Wet eyes weren't at all good like wet sand. Wet eyes meant maybe she was hurt and she could not see where.

"Are you hurt?" She leaned over further, and then knelt down in the sand. It was warm, and she did not have shoes on her feet because she wanted to feel that very warm feeling of the sand between her toes. Klah chirruped, fluttering to the ground and peering at the girl curiously. His was concerned, in her way, and so he would be too. He tucked his wings in, watching the girl curiously.

Cayden then spotted blood on the girls lip, and announced matter-of-fact,

"you are hurt." Then, she remembered something important, and asked, "do you want me to kiss it better?"

At the Hold, when someone was hurt, the mom always asked if they wanted it to be kissed better. She was not a mom but the girl's mom was not here. So there was no one else but her to ask if the girl wanted it to be kissed better. Plus the girl had wet eyes. She did not understand how a kiss could make it better. But they always stopped crying when the kiss was administered. Maybe it was one of those things you could not explain, like when she asked about what Impression was like. They said you had to experience it. She had yet to experience a hurt fixing kiss. She would ask the girl if it was better once she had given her one, though, and see if she could do it too.

Zane didn’t notice that another had traveled over, not until the poor girl was near ready to have a heart attack. Cayden knelt at her side, looking upon her as if she might have been broken, or dead. Or at least that’s what Zane came to make of it. When she turned her head to glance up at the stranger hovering above her, she didn’t do much more than blink. She’d heard the girl’s question, but she wasn’t too sure how to answer it. She didn’t want to lie, because really she wasn’t okay, and yet she wasn’t physically hurt. She might’ve skinned her knee or something, but that was nothing to complain over. The only thing she really had to complain over at this point was Cayden being so close. She didn’t know her, and she really was too close, even if she was just trying to see whether or not she’d hurt herself. Best way to make her not close was to answer her.

”I’m fine. Really, I am.” She sat up to prove it, scooting back a bit, trying to put some distance between them without making it noticeable that she was doing so. The girl must’ve been looking at her lip when having declared she was hurt. She could taste the blood in her mouth. She sucked on the wound, trying to clean it out a bit. No use to have blood drying on her mouth. The metallic taste of her blood was not appealing to her.

Zane had managed a level of calm that was typical for when she was in a neutral situation, but then Cayden was asking her if she wanted her to kiss it better, and the brunette was on her feet faster than she’d fallen down. She dusted herself off, unable to even look at the other girl. Her nerves were shattered to pieces with that single, what she assumed was flirtatious, offer. Why would the girl say something like that? Girls didn’t flirt with other girls? Was she really trying to say that she wanted to kiss her? Oh, this was so awkward. Zane kept her head down, her face going beat red. Why had she come here? It was such a mistake! She was already falling all over herself, and now this strange girl was trying to get a rise out of her or something! She began to doubt her even wanting to know if she was hurt at all. Or was she just overanalyzing now? Was she thinking badly of the girl when maybe she had just been... just been what? That was the issue, she didn’t know. She was worked up into frenzy, her tears having stained her cheeks.

Zane looked as if she was about to break into a cold sweat, her breathing was heavier, and she had been dusting herself off now for far too long. Her head had not risen up even once to acknowledge the girl’s presence further, or to acknowledge anything for that fact. Yes, Zane was in shock, and that shock was mingled with absolute fear.

When she actually did gain enough courage to look up, she immediately turned around to see where her bags had landed. Great, some of her clothes had come spilling out of the one. Now she’d have less clothing to wear than she already did. She’d really been hoping not to have to wash her clothes so early on. She’d done so before having packed them. Now she was left with no choice but to wash them all over again. Oh well, it wouldn’t take long. At least she’d have something to do, and laundry could thankfully be a solitary activity.

”Sorry to have worried you,” she said quickly, not meeting the others gaze. ”I’ll just... go,” she declared, not moving even though she’d technically bid the girl farewell. She hadn’t really been appropriately dismissed by the other girl. When she was bid a farewell of sorts in return, then it would be all right for her to move to reclaim her things. She couldn’t be rude, not to the first person she’d run into here; not to anyone for that matter. Despite the fact that she was fighting off the nervous shakes, she remained.

Cayden wasn't sure if the girl had not hit her head too hard. Yet it was not apparent how one could hit her head on the sand. Sand was soft, and you did not knock your head hard enough to make you not able to speak on it. When Zane blinked at her, she blinked right back. Blink. Blink. Blink. One, two and three times. She almost smiled at the blinks. You blinked a lot, but you were never really aware you were doing so. It was how your eyes stayed clean. Because you could rinse your eyes with water. But you could not wash your eyes so your eyes washed all by themselves. Eyes were very clean things. Getting dirty eyes was no fun, besides.

Then the girl suddenly spoke, and was very suddenly up and moving. Backward. She did the only polite thing to do. She waddled in her kneeling position forward. But then another unexpected thing happened. She had asked the girl if she wanted her to make it better, and then the other brunette stood up as though something had bit her on her butt. Had something bit her on her butt? She was going all red in the face, and Cayden was quite sure something must have. She stood up, dusting herself off with enthusiasm. Sand made you itch. Itching was bad. But what about the girls butt that had been likely bitten? Then another thought struck her. She had failed.

She had thought that if the moms could do it, maybe she could too. But the other girl had moved away, bitten bum or not bitten bum. How was she to fix it now? Her brows knit and her face fell, discouraged. But she should fix it! She really wanted very much to fix it with the kissing magic. She did not think she wanted to kiss this girl's butt though. That was icky. She crinkled up her nose and made a face. Maybe she had to to fix this, but she did not want to kiss that. Not to hurt the other girl's feelings but that's where stink came from. She supposed it was cleaned though. She always triple checked for clean no-stink bum. Probably this girl was just as careful to have a no-stink bum, too.

Then she noticed that the girl was still brushing herself off. But she was not dirty anymore. And shouldn't she be worried about her bum? Cayden looked down at the sand. Sand was not so bad. But then she spotted the clothes, strewn on the sand. Not good. Sand in the clothes was itchy. She had failed at the kissing magic. She could not kiss the place where stink came from it just would not do. She stood there, in consternation, staring at the clothes on the sand. Then she walked forward, and picked up something. Oh. This went on her bottom parts. It was important that this did not get itchy and full of sand. She immediately began shaking it quite vigorously. Very vigorously. The sand had to come out, all of it! She could not do the kiss magic but this she could do!

"Come out, bad sand! Out, out, out!" She scolded the undergarment quite thoroughly, and then held it at arm's length towards Zane. Who then said she had to go? Where would she go? There were more sandy on-the-sand clothes. They needed to be made un-itchy like the one she held out now!

"Can they really stay there?" She asked, looking from the clothes to the girl, and then once more a repeat. "I think they would not want to stay there. You should get the itchy out," she said, quite reasonably. She was still holding Zane's underpants out, arm straight. Klah, meanwhile, flew down and picked up a bra, beginning to shake it too, as best as he could. Had to get all the sand out, they did!

The other girl wasn’t saying much of anything. Well, nope, she wasn’t saying anything at all. Zane looked up to see what she was doing, but she wasn’t quite sure. She was soon glancing at where her clothes were strewn about, and she wandered over, picking up a pair of her undergarments. She was shaking them vigorously; meanwhile Zane’s mouth was ajar. Most literally ajar, her reddening face paling completely. She was as white as a bed sheet. ”You don’t have to do that!” she shouted, running up to retrieve her clothing from Cayden. ”Please give it back,” she urged, frowning. Okay, more than frowning. She had started crying again. ”Please,” she begged, looking around to see who was watching. This was so embarrassing! This girl must have really hated her! Why was she trying to humiliate her like this? Was there something wrong with her? Zane couldn’t contain her sobs, and she didn’t bother trying. She was completely humiliated; crying wasn’t going to make it any worse. Not that crying was going to make it any better either, but she couldn’t help it! This was so horrible, beyond horrible. The girl was handing over her undergarments rather readily once she’d shaken them out. Zane took them from her, not sure how to hide the item in her hands. She held it against her chest. She tried to swallow but her throat was far too dry.

Not having been able to look at Cayden, now she couldn’t look away, trying to figure out what was in this girls head. She turned at another perfect panic attack moment because the girl’s flitt was shaking out her bra now. ”Please make him stop,” she begged, motioning to the brown flitt. Was this some kind of joke? Had she offended the girl in some way? Had she done something wrong? ”Whatever I did, I’m sorry,” she apologized, wiping the tears from her face with her sleeve.

Oh... she was lightheaded, super lightheaded. Everything around her was becoming very unsteadied. She had to sit down, but she couldn’t. She needed to get out of here. She needed to grab her things. Now. She turned away from Cayden, moving a few paces to gather pieces of her clothing, not seeming to care that they were sand-covered like the other girl did. She’d have to wash them all as soon as she got a spare moment. Soon her clothes were gathered up in her arms. She walked a few paces to her bag and stuffed them in, kneeling down so she could make it all fit. She looked up and over to where the brown was, waiting for the girl to have him relinquish her bra to her. So humiliating! This was the worst day of her life. She couldn’t stay here, no, she was sure of that now. Her foster parents would understand her wanting to return home. They just had to! So you’re deciding to disappoint them then? her mind cut-in. Zane sniffled, drying her face of tears again. She figured that anyone spotting her would think she was a cry-baby. Never mind she was being harassed by this random girl.

She was supposed to have gone to the Candidate barracks and unpacked her things, now she doubted getting there at all. Not at this rate. By the time she managed to lose this girl, if she did even manage to lose her, it’d be nightfall. Uh, this stress was too much! She couldn’t handle it. She was not made for stress, her mind and body were both too fragile. She stood up, still feeling incredibly lightheaded. She swayed a bit, but managed to stay on her feet. Please just let me make it out of this, she thought, her fears starting to wander towards kidnapping. What if the girl tried to force her to go somewhere with her? What if she was armed? Yes, she had to sit down. She really had to sit... She knelt back down, pretending like she had forgotten to put something in her bag. With her back to the girl she frantically began trying to come up with escape options. She didn’t want anyone to get hurt! She wasn’t even capable of hurting anyone! That would involve touching them, and she couldn’t do that. Sh-she just couldn’t! Oh Faranth, help me!

Cayden was now sure that something was wrong with the other girl. She had hit her head and she was damaged. Cayden had hit her head and forgotten her entire life before the Hold. What if this girl forgot her life? She felt a tight feeling in her tummy, and she looked down at it, confused. Not good. Then the girl started to cry. Cayden, arm still outstretched and offering the now itch-free undergarment, stared in confusion. There was the eye cleaning blinks again. More times than three. Definitely more times. What was wrong? Then she took them, and Cayden was thinking maybe everything was all right again.

Her eyes had leaked an awful lot. Maybe not. Maybe she was damaged inside her head and it had made her eyes leak that much. Eyes leaked when you hurt. She had failed to fix the hurt and now look what had happened! Then Zane was talking, and asking her to make him stop. Who was him? She then turned and looked at Klah. Then back at Zane. She pursed her mouth, narrowed her eyes, and pointed at the firelizard, raising an eyebrow.

"Why? He makes it not itch," she explained, trying to reason with the girl. Only the girl did not seem to understand. She was wiping her eye stains from her face and she was saying sorry. But she hadn't done anything. People who did bad things said sorry. She only said it when she meant it though. How could this girl mean it if she had not done a bad thing? Her eyes widened. This girl was lying to her! Lying was so bad! How could you say sorry when you were saying sorry and doing the bad thing that was lying by saying sorry? Should she take the sorry because it was a sorry or not take it because the sorry was the lie? Her head began to do circles. What should she do? It was a very, very serious thing. Lying was so bad. Sorry as a lie was like a really big bad thing.

The girl turned away and Cayden wondered if she was sorry that she had sorry lied. Maybe she was and that was good. The other girl was picking up her clothes and not shaking them out! Did she not believe in wearing non-itch clothing? That was so not good. The sand would stay there now and get into all her skin places. She would itch when she walked and when she sat and even when she slept! Cayden shuddered, and wondered again just how damaged the fall had made the other girl. She glanced at Klah, wondering how she could fix this. This was very bad. The other girl was making sorry lies and her eyes leaked lots, and she seemed to be very wrong in her head. Klah chirruped, and flew over to his, handing her the bra, which Cayden took with a serious, thoughtful expression. She wanted to help the damaged girl. There was still that! She smiled a little, because maybe this was not so bad if she could make it better.

Cayden, bra in hand, walked around to the front of the girl where she was sitting, and her face was very serious. She squinted her eyes, and chewed the inside of her lip for a brief moment. Okay. She could fix this, starting with the very first hurt, the one she could see on the outside. With that, she very quickly moved forward, and placed a big, mom fixing kiss, right smack dab on the damaged girl's lips. Then she pulled back, smiling a big smile, because hadn't she just done the best fixing ever? Klah trilled in delight, doing a little loop in the air. His was just so amazing.
