Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Icy, look what I made!!!!

For everyone else, except Kolstoi, this is completely random. Sorry! I'm not usually in the habit of killing off dragons. It makes me sad. :( This all has to do with a series of ghost stories our candidates (Icy, Kolstoi and I) told at a different Weyr.

I guess this deserves further explanation. When Icy says stuff in the cbox like this:

Quote:

Icy: it gives a whole new meaning to the question "Hey fiala, did Tesserath have her head when you left her in the barracks?"

She's refering to the ghost story one of her candidates told. I'm going to go ahead and transpose it here....

Icy

"In the 5th Pass," he said slowly, "there was a hatching at Fort. This was a long time ago, but you can still find it in the Records today." He looked around the circle again somberly. "The Gold wasn't the oldest one, but she was high-ranking, and she was caught by a bronze dragon. They had a big clutch, bigger than the one Symbeloth has on the sands right now. And there was a Queen egg." He paused for dramatic effect.

"It was the largest egg this Gold had ever lain, and everybody in the Weyr thought the gold that hatched from it would be the strongest dragon they'd ever seen. They began to celebrate, thinking that their good fortune would provide them with the leadership strong enough to see them through the rest of the Pass, until the end of Threadfall."

He blinked slowly around them, noting with satisfaction that many of the candidates seemed transfixed. One little boy's mouth was hanging open. He continued, "On the day of the hatching, all the eggs began to crack, and strong dragons came forward and Impressed. Blues, browns, greens, and bronzes. The Weyr was delighted with the dragonets. But the Gold egg didn't hatch. It twitched a few times, like the dragon inside was struggling to get out, and then it lay still." He took a breath, glancing at the girls but not catching any of their eyes.

"Then, one of the candidates stepped forward. She said that the dragon inside was speaking to her and asking her to help her get out of the egg. She walked over to the egg and began breaking the shell open. The Gold had Impressed her, but she couldn't break her own shell."

Leoran looked around the circle again before continuing. "Well, the candidate got the shell off, and the dragon spilled out. Even though it was such a large egg, the dragon was weak and feeble. She died," he said shortly, keeping his voice low, "almost the minute she got out of her shell. That candidate, well, she had just Impressed and immediately her dragon left her."

He was quiet for a long moment to let the horror sink in. A few of the candidates looked repulsed; the rest, he guessed, didn't yet understand the bond between a dragon and rider. "Well, the dragon was too weak to go between," Leoran continued in a quiet voice. "And the girl... She was driven mad with the immediate loss. She took her dragon and dragged it across the sands for all the Weyr to see." His voice lowered even further and he leaned over the small torch. "And then do you know what happened?" He glanced around one more time. "As she was dragging her dead dragon across the sands, she pulled its head right off." He finished and glanced around at the faces once more, feeling grimly satisfied that many of them reflected fear, horror, or dread.

He sat back, leaving everybody in flickering half-light. Whether the story was actually true or not wasn't clear, and Leoran wasn't about to tell.

It's out of context, because the whole IC scenario was pretty awesome, but hopefully this makes a bit more sense now. I probably should have left it in the Weyr where it happened, but I was pretty proud of figuring out how to animate things.
