Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Height never proved to be her strong suit. Especially when it came to chores. Especially when it came to stacking things that had to be a good dragonlength higher than her. That's what it appeared to be in Senyrae's case anyway. "Seriously? This has to be some sort of joke." The Headwoman must have been super irritated today to give her the short end of the stick (no pun intended). She lifted another package from the floor.

"Hey there, pipsqueak," a taunting voice reached the girl's ears. A wave of agitation gripped her as she recognized it. "Bugger off, Enyll," she said to the male that appeared at her side, a group of his cronies at his heels. The Holder boy had deemed it his life's challenge to make her miserable ever since he arrived at Vaioa. And he always added more fire to the flames for being nearly 6 feet tall, a fact that he never ceased flaunting to her. She had no idea what caused him to act this way. Except maybe the time she let loose spinners in his room. Hey, it was an accident, okay!

"Ah, don't be that way. Me and the boys here thought you could use some help." Enyll grabbed the box from her fingers, lifting it up into the air with a mocking smirk on his face. Oh, he wouldn't... "Give it back!" Senyrae yelled. "Only if you can reach it, shorty!" His boys laughed as she fruitlessly jumped into the air to reach said object. "Almost got it! Oop, just missed it!" Over and over Enyll taunted, the paparazzi in the back joining in on the game as he lifted the package above her head and out of her reach.

So Senyrae snapped.

Her leg recoiled, landing a swift kick to Enyll's shin. He howled in pain and dropped the box, breaking the wine bottles it housed and spilling it all over the floor. The rest made a break for her but slipped on the floor, red stains growing on their clothing. "You're gonna pay for that!" Enyll yelled. Senyrae made a mad dash for it down the hall, the sound of footsteps following her not to far behind.

She rounded a corner, passing by a group of kitchen folk. She ignored their cries to watch where she was going, only focusing on getting away as far as possible.

Eventually, her breath shortened, her legs ached. Senyrae stopped, kneeling on the ground as she caught her breath. The candidate glanced over her shoulder. Thank Faranth she lost them...

"Found you," the smug voice came. A hand grabbed Senyrae's shirt, leaving her face to face with a furious Enyll.

Fardles.

Bryn was absolutely positive that people just came through the lower caverns sprinkling dust and debris behind them. There was no other explanation - she swept these stupid hallways every stupid day and they were always filthy whenever she came back to do it again. Pointless and stupid and a waste of time.

The crash of shattering glass only served to foul her mood. Doubtless that would become her responsibility, too. She stalked out around the corner just in time for Senyrae to dart by. Bryn opened her mouth to call her out, recognizing her from their candidate lessons, and from just generally seeing her around. However, the small pack of males that pursued her threw Bryn for a loop. What on Pern? There was no way that kind of situation was a good one. She glanced down at her broom, and then took off after them, long legs quickly bringing her up with the rest of the group.

Bryn raised her broom, bringing it down with a heavy "thwack!" against the nearest boy's shins, the solid wood of the handle tripping him up. Bryn hopped over him as he fell, intent on her next victim. Senyrae needed help, and Bryn needed a fight.

Bryn grabbed one young man by the back of his head, grunting with effort as she crammed his face into the wall, throwing her other elbow into his spine. She could barely see Senyrae - she was blocked from view by the idiot that was manhandling her.

"HEY! Tunnelsnake SHIT!" She spat the words, a growl building up in her chest. "Let 'er go, or this broom is going up your ass!"

She ducked a punch from one of the remaining cronies, emitting a grunt when one grabbed a hold of her hair. "Jays, Sen, bite him or something!"

Eleonora was lucky or unlucky enough to have beeen caught in the candidate barracks all day. It certainly beat mining. Ele dreaded being called up for that. Mining was nice and all, but it was not for her. Her brother Telimnon might be pleased if he was called up for such a chore, but he generally liked strange things anyway. As things were today consisted of cleaning the common room and, well, everyone else's rooms in the barracks. She thought it might be interesting, spying on her fellow candidates, but it turned out to be just as horrible as any other chore.

The moment her supervisor stepped away, Ele slipped out of the barracks, leaving Tylessin cleaning all alone. She didn't necessarily feel bad about that. Tylessin was nice enough and he was quite pretty to look at, but he seemed to take the chores way too seriously.

Eleonora skipped through the hallways, enjoying her freedom and ran right into some gigantic brawl. She gasped. One girl was pressed against the wall while another attacked a whole group of young men with a broom! Shards, this was much better than chores! There was no way she'd miss out on this action.

The girl with the broom seemed quite able to take care of herself. There was no way Ele could help the girl being pressed against the wall, unless she pushed her way through the other young men. So, that's what she'd do. She ran up to the one closest to her and kicked him in the shins. He yelled and grabbed at her, so she slapped him. "What do you think you're doing! Get out of here and leave us alone!" she yelled.

Well, if there was one thing that was certain, it was that Vassili lived a completely different life at the Weyr. It was true that he worked all day - however, he'd always been in the mines. Today, he was washing dishes. Back home, the women were always in charge of the kitchens and would shoo him out every time he wandered in. It was much the same at the Weyr, except he was a part of it now. It was interesting learning the patterns and rhythms the kitchen workers fell into daily.

"Vassili!" The sharp, commanding voice was unmistakably the Headwoman's. He whirled around and quickly wiped his hands dry on his apron.

"Yes?"

The Headwoman was not happy, that was apparent. Her face, twisted in a scowl, reflected the irritated tone of her voice. "Senyrae is taking too sharding long in those store rooms and I don't have time for such incompetence! Go help her, and Faranth's sake boy, be quick about it!" Not waiting for Vassili to respond, she abruptly stalked off, mumbling angrily under her breath as she went.

Vassili wasted no time. He did not want to be subject to that woman's wrath; poor Senyrae would probably bear the brunt of it when they returned. He shucked off his apron, hung it on its appropriate hook on the wall, and hurried into the Lower Caverns. He knew the way easily by now; he'd been sent there Faranth knows how many times to retrieve heavier supplies.

Drawing nearer to his destination, he began to hear a commotion of some sort. Curious, he quickened his pace, rounded the corner, and stopped. There was utter chaos, an all out brawl. A group of boys... against three girls!? What was this? There was no way the girls stood any chance... he recognized Senyrae and, attacking her, Enyll - he always was a troublemaker.

"Stop! All of you!" He bellowed, furious. When no one listened, he darted to Enyll and tore him from Senyrae, and with a swift punch to the jaw, sent him reeling backwards. "Jays, Enyll, what is this! What do you think you're fecking doing!" Face contorted in rage, he advanced on the taller lad - and was abruptly tackled to the floor by one of Enyll's cronies. Some of them may have had some reservations about hitting girls, but the miner was fair game.

"This isn't your fight, Vassili!" He heard above him and gasped in pain as a kick connected with his ribs. Rolling away to avoid the next blow, he sprung to his feet and leapt after the offender. As he grappled with him, he caught sight of another boy, raising his hand to strike Eleonora.

"Stop!" Vassili moved to intervene and thus distracted, could not react in time to dodge his attacker's fist. It slammed into his face and Vassili stumbled backwards, aware of more nauseating pain, aware that blood was trickling from his nose, and aware that this fight was not going in their favor.

Even if she was a Candidate, her job and the Candidate chores came before her free time. Of course, she also put her Candidate chores before her job now. If she didn’t finish those chores, she knew something bad would happen between her and the Candidatemaster. It was safe to say that she woke up early, as she did every day anyway, and did her candidate chores early. It was around that time that Doe arrived with a message for her to take. She’d just finished and arrived back at the Weyr when she heard screaming. It was just her luck that she would arrive when something like that happened.

She rounded a corner and noted—first and foremost, of course—Brynn hitting a man with a broom. It would have been amusing if she hadn’t also noticed a couple other guys and girls duking it out. She didn’t know how the fight had started and, frankly, didn’t even care how it did. She saw a girl struggling against a guy on the wall. She saw another girl kicking a guy in the shins that was easily twice her size. She also noted that another guy had come, but he was on the side of the girls. And she didn’t even have to add Bryn into that count. She knew what Bryn was doing. What was this, two times now that she’d seen Bryn hitting a guy?

It only took her a few moments to take in the atmosphere… which she certainly didn’t like to do but had to do anyway. There were… there were two guys left just standing around jeering. She quickly stepped forward to the closest guy and, taking her goggles, hefty things when used in the right way, she thwacked one of the jeering guys straight in the head. As he cried in the beginnings of pain, she pushed a flat hand into his throat. He was left gagging for breath as he sank to the ground.

Dimly, she could hear the guy who’d been helping the girls yell ‘stop,’ but her mind was just a haze. She forced herself to stop fighting, but the other man had rounded on her. He held a stick in his hand. His eyes flashed with rage. Andy blinked and held up her hands, “Hey, I don’t want to fight you.” She said but before it could register in his mind, he lunged forward. With the ease of a runner, she sidestepped and thwacked his arm with the goggles. The way they hit made a dull thud. The boy barely looked like he felt it.

He swung around but Andy was ready. The red haze that shrouded her before pushed back again. Andy grinned. He twisted his stick at her and Andy wondered what the stick had come from, but that thought was only in the back of her mind. Another thwack in the same place on his arm as she side-stepped. She was smiling. “I warned you to stop. I can do this all day. Either your muscles will hurt or I’ll break your arm.”

Another thrust, another side-step, another swift hit with her goggles. This time the pain registered. But he thrust the stick again. Andy leapt agilely over the man who’d she’d taken out first, who was in a fetal position and wheezing through his open mouth. She almost giggled. “Are you serious?”

With a swift hit, she launched the goggles directly at the guy’s bridge of his nose. He stepped back, reeling. Andy took that moment to raise her voice, “I suggest everyone stop now, or someone’ll end up more hurt than I originally intended.”

((I hope you don't mind me going out of order. I just wanted to move Eleonora along. :) ))

Eleonora was excited. She was winning! The young man seemed quite taken aback by her kicking and her hitting. In fact, she was sure that he would give up any moment now. A grin of triumph broke out across her face. That grin quickly disappeared as he lunged toward her instead. She heard another young man shouting, but she didn't have time to look. Her enemy was in front of her, his arm raised. She flinched and the next thing she knew she was on the floor.

Her face hurt, it hurt so bad. She struggled up with her arm, blinking away tears. The room reeled around her. Things weren't supposed to turn out this way! She reached up one hand to touch her face. It hurt all over, but around her eye especially. Oh no, was her eye still there?! She pressed against her face frantically. When she looked at her hand again she saw no blood. She blinked. It felt like her eye was still there. She let out a small sigh of relief. That relief didn't last long. There was someone in front of her...

Ele looked up to see the young man from before, the one who punched her. She struggled to her feet, one hand pressed against her eye. She didn't find it hard to yell at him. It was, in fact, quite easy. "I said, leave me alone!" she yelled. He didn't seem to find her very intimidating, because he started laughing. He raised his fist again, but Ele was quicker to react this time. She side-stepped around the lumbering giant and rushed to Bryn's side. "Help!" she squealed.

"Not so tough now, are ya?" Enyll jeered in her ears. If she wasn't busy clawing at his arm to let her go, Senyrae would have absolutely loved to punch that evil little smirk he had on his face. The fist that gripped her shirt sent a horrible sensation down her neck and spine, and she found herself struggling to breathe. Enyll paid no heed to the pain he was causing to the girl, only focusing on exacting his revenge. "See what happens when you mess with me? No one does that to me and gets away with it." He reared his hand back, Senyrae closing her eyes at the strike to come.

Bryn's voice reached her ears, the shock of the boys being tackled by her fellow companion had her reach just far enough to dig her canines into the skin on his hand. Screeching, Enyll swiped her across the cheek. Senyrae's head reeled with the ringing in her ears. Thankfully, the choking sensation ceased as someone sent Enyll to the floor, giving her time to recover her bearings. Her cheek stung and the faint taste of blood grew on her tongue. Shards, this was getting bad. Really bad.

A flurry of people was what Senyrae saw, becoming utter chaos. She could see Bryn being held back by one of Enyll's brutes, and the boy that had knocked said male from her was suffering from a bloody nose.

Speaking of Enyll... "You are so dead!" He lunged at Senyrae, knocking her off her feet and lying face down on the ground. She struggled against his grip on her wrists, a red haze growing as her voice grew sore with her screams. The mark on his hand she left him began bleeding and stuck between their palms. What am I gonna do?

Enyll had to weigh at least twice her size, but by some leap of faith her leg had squirmed free and the girl kneed him in the place where the sun don't shine. He rolled away in writhing pain, his heated gaze fixing on her as she leaped at him, twisting his arms back to hopefully leave a nasty bruise in its wake. Her hold slackened as his struggles grew weaker, and he finally stopped. "Who's the tough one now?" she snickered in his ear. Her only answer was a gurgling moan.

Another boy decided to intercede, and she had to leave her nemesis to help Vassili lest he suffer another attack. It could also possibly give them the upper hand with their leader down for the count. She dodged a swing and kicked him in the shins, weakening him enough that the tag team could breing him down.

She ripped into the hand that was holding her hair with her nails, smiling in grim satisfaction as she felt the indicative wetness of blood drawn, the accompanying yowl more than enough for her to know she'd enraged her target. She whirled, teeth bared in a fantastic snarl, arms already raising to distribute justice.

Off to the side, she noted that Vassili had tackled Enyll off of Senyrae, who seemed to be doing well enough on her own now. Eleonora had joined the fray at some point, kicking and slapping and generally striking for all that she was worth, and Andreya had made an appearance as well, slinging her goggles. Bryn could admire the girl's ingenuity in weapon choice - she'd dropped her own when her hair had been grabbed and pulled, the clatter of wood on stone just adding to the din.

As she raised a fist to throw herself back into the fight, she felt something bump up against her side. Since it didn't hurt, Bryn deduced that it wasn't one of the cronies - sure enough, it was Eleonora. A panicked, distressed Eleonora.

Bryn saw red.

Nobody, and Bryn truly meant nobody, panicked like that unless they were really, really scared. And if Ele was that scared, she wasn't going to be able to defend herself. That left Bryn to do it for her.

"C'mmere, you ugly lug!" She hollered, grabbing the male in front of her by his shirt, making sure to get good, solid fistfuls. Bryn dug her feet into the ground, crouching, muscles tensing and roiling as she prepared herself. Her arms flexed, and with a herculean effort, lifted him from the floor and threw him into the male that was advancing on Eleonora. Bryn roared, face flushing red with both fury and excitement, taking a few steps back, taking Ele as gently as she could by the shoulder and directing her to step behind her. "Git behind me and stay close to the wall, Ell. I'mma rip 'em up."

Straightening to her full height, Bryn opened her mouth again, taunting at the one adversary who had staggered back to his feet. "COME AT ME, MORON," she roared once more, beating against her chest with her fists. He did just that, and before Bryn knew it, his solid fist was plowing into her right cheek with a heavy crack. She grunted, faltering, but with Eleonora right behind her, there was no way she was going down. She slammed her foot into his in-step, and then grabbed a hold of his hair, rearing back and then crashing their skulls together with another primal scream.

With all the commotion going on in the hallways, the small green firelizard that popped in, hovered over the candidates, and then popped between with a squawk was hardly noticed. However, when she emerged in Merilla's office, chattering in agitation, she commanded all of the Candidatemaster's attention.

Rising from her chair where she had been going over paperwork, Merilla gingerly moved towards the flitter, hoping to calm her down. "Shh, it's alright, it's alright. What is wrong?" The poor green, eyes whirling red, squeaked at her and abruptly disappeared. Utterly confused, Merilla sank back into her chair, not sure how to proceed.

The little cousin is bothering me now, Endyrth rumbled irritably from her weyrledge and Merilla could faintly hear the lizard's squeals. She is one of the kitchen worker's. She keeps showing me young ones. They are fighting.

Show me! Merilla shot to her feet. As Endyrth relayed the distorted image, Merilla was already sprinting out to her dragon. This couldn't be happening! With speed allowed by years of practice and spurred by anxiety and rage, Merilla vaulted onto her dragon's neck. Take me to the lower caverns! Go!

Endyrth, opalescent eyes wheeling red in reflection of her rider's fears, leapt into the sky.

------------------------------

Vassili was on the defense now. Having been momentarily dazed by that incredible punch, it was all he could do not to be hit again. To his dismay he caught sight of Eleonora on the floor - the lad had struck her after all, despite his warning. Was she alright? Another girl had arrived, her call to cease fighting ignored just as his was. Bryn, too, was locked in combat and Enyll, to his right, was back on Senyrae. Again, his concern cost him; his antagonist slipped under his raised hands and drove his fist into the miner's stomach, leaving him doubled over and gasping for air.

Ah. Shards. He never had been a good fighter. Too slow. Too distracted. Vassili stepped back, hoping to put enough distance between them to recover - and felt his back press against the wall. Shards! Luckily, this was when Senyrae intervened. Realizing his chance, he shot forward and swung with all his strength. It was a sloppy, desperate attempt, but ultimately it landed true - the boy's head snapped back and he stumbled.

"Thanks," he managed to say to Senyrae, sincerely grateful for her interference. But this fight was far from over. The girl with the goggles had done a fair job of dispatching two of Enyll's friends but they wouldn't be out of the fight for long and Bryn was still dealing with one or two others. Vassili stepped forward to help - and froze as a sharp whistle pierced the air, clearly audible above the fighting.

"ALL OF YOU, STOP THIS INSTANT!" Merilla's voice boomed as she stormed into their midst, grabbing both Bryn and her opponent by their shirt collars and ruthlessly tearing them apart. As she released them from her iron grasp, the boy staggered backwards and fell over one of his friends, but Merilla was too senseless with fury to care. "THE NEXT CANDIDATE THAT MOVES IS GOING HOME!" She wheeled around, livid, glaring at each and every one of them, silently daring them to defy her.

"You are supposed to be the best of Pern!" She continued slowly after a moment, voice quieter but her tone still dripping with acid. "The absolute best! That's why you're here instead of crouching in a field or popping out babies like a brood mare! Because you were all deemed worthy of impressing a dragon!" Merilla snorted in disgust and shook her head. "But you have all just proved yourselves to be the absolute lowest of mankind - fighting like animals! Dragonmen. Do. Not. Fight. And if you want to be one, neither do you."

Her words fell on deaf ears. Of course they’d fall on deaf ears. Everyone was in the middle of a fight, the blood rushing into their ears. In the heat of battle, barely anyone could hear anyone else. Of course, though, it didn’t matter. The fight was, for most intensive purposes, winding down. The boy she’d sent to the floor first was backing up slowly, still wheezing, still clutching his throat. He was a wimp, a wuss. But the other boy was still putting up a fight. She looked back at him, a sly grin crossing her face.

“You don’t want to do that.” She said as he raised his stick. She readied her goggled and he made a huge swoop with the stick that missed by a mile. She thwacked in in the back of the head with her goggles. “Is your friendship to that guy over there really worth all of this?”

He wasn’t listening. His eyes were full of rage. The smile left her face and instead she held only a grim line where her lips should have been. Well, technically they were still there… we’ll just drop that. He swung at her again and she ducked before popping back up and hitting him twice in quick succession. He kept coming and coming and coming and finally, she let her arm swing the hardest she’d swung. She was through with this. This fight was useless. He was obviously doing this just for the fun of it. She was doing it to help a girl. The powerful swing of her goggles hit him soundly in the chest right above his clavicle.

She hadn’t meant to hit him there, but the thunk where half the goggles hit the bone in his chest and the dull thud where they hid the soft spot above the bone was loud enough for her to hear and wince. The boy fell backward, gasping for breath, the stick flying out of his hand. She didn’t raise her goggles again. “I told you to stop.”

Suddenly, a shrill voice erupted and Andreya spun around with surprise. Oh wherrydung. Oh fardling wherrydung. Merilla had arrived. When she yelled out the next candidate moving bit, Andy didn’t know if she meant that literally or not, but she glared easily at the candidatemaster and deliberately pushed the goggles back onto her head, resting the actual goggles on the top of her head. She knew that the boy she’d just hit herself was backing up slowly from the vicinity.

Merilla was lecturing them. Andreya continued to glare. Merilla had no idea why the fighting was happening! She was going to punish them all for something she had no idea about! Truth be told, Andy wasn’t too sure herself, but she at least knew that the boys, that one dude in particular, was going to do something bad to… Senyrae was it? She stepped forward to get Merilla’s attention on her.

“You’re just going to accuse us before you know anything about it?” She asked, her voice calm, too calm it seemed. “There was no talking to them. They were attacking a girl, and I doubt they’d listen to reason. You can call me lower than a trundlebug all you want, Candidatemaster, but I know what I did might have saved her from perhaps worse punishment… from something you can never take back.” Her voice was not condescending. It was a voice of reason. She sounded like a leader, like she’d organized this. But she hadn’t even been there the whole time.

She didn't know if it might have happened, but if no one had been there, one of the worst things that could happen was rape. Or death.
