Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

As the bronzerider spoke, Merilla sat quietly, staring vacantly out over the charts before her. A slight frown spread over her features as she listened. Bandits, attacking Vaioa? Were some really taking it so seriously? There had been rumors of bandits before, rumors even when Merilla was new to the weyr five years ago. There had likely been rumors long before then, if Pertor's reaction was anything to go by.

Then there was Chrys's story. Even if she was telling the truth - and Merilla assumed she was - even then, a single caravan was a vulnerable target, and it had only taken a few whers to scare them off. If that had been enough to send the holdless fleeing, then she doubted that they would invade, as Pertor said, a Weyr full of dragons and a mine full of whers. Although she silently resented the pointed attack at the two women, she found herself siding with the Masterminer.

"Chrys, you say the holdless were attacking those they perceived as weak?" Merilla asked the young woman gently, not wanting to upset her more than Pertor likely had. "The Weyr is by no means weak. Neither is the Hold, nor the Mine. If only a few whers scared them off earlier, how could they possibly have the guts to attack here?" She glanced at O'zen, who was observing her with obvious scrutiny.

"You're naive, Merilla," he remarked suddenly.

Her expression hardened and she shook her head. "You suggest we use wingriders to defend the Mine when the likelihood of attack is small. I'd rather see those wingriders preparing for Thread, that's all," she said and dropped her vision down to the formations on the charts before her. Thread was coming, that was inevitable. And soon. Merilla had the terrible feeling that they weren't prepared, and rumor of bandits, compared to the ancient silver menace, seemed a paltry issue.

X'hic only spared a cursory glance at the charts the riders were presented. He and Tonouth hadn't seen the skies in a while. He was pretty sure things weren't going to be changing anytime soon. It was Chrys' words that had him raise his eyebrows in interest. Holdless attacking caravans? While it sure was old news, X'hic hadn't heard about them making a move against the mines since the Mineguard had opened up to the riders. The efficiency of the guard, on the other hand, was up to question. He had never personally been involved, but enough talk went aroung the wings that from what he knew, it mostly consisted of silly dares and a lot of alcohol. The bluerider scrunched his nose disapprovingly.

It wasn't the attacks on the mines itself so much that affected him that the words of herbs being stolen made him draw his eyebrows in concern. The hold was mostly the dragonhealer's source of receiving his supplies, since the desert proved to be very unfit territory to grow their own wares. Either that or it came from the other weyrs on the continent, but that proved to be very uncommon for them. X'hic's mouth drew into a thin line when Chrys described what had happened.

And then the squabble started. People back and forth shot remarks back and forth that there was no need for dragons, the mines could take care of themselves. Others wanted to be cautious, allow some to stand guard just in case. It lead to nothing but a stalemate, and X'hic wasn't sure where to side on this.

He crossed his arms in thought. Yes, the interval was coming to an end, which meant that the dragons would be morely needed for Threadfall to arrive soon. And the whers proved to be plenty enough to do the job themselves. On the other hand, if the bandits decided to be bold enough, there was the slight chance they could be robbed, both of copper and medicine. And when Threadfall came, if they weren't properly equipped... Faranth help them.

Sighing, X'hic added in, "I understand your concerns, Merilla. And Pertor, I am sure the mines would definitely be more than capable of handling themselves." He crossed his arms, frowning before adding in, "But I still believe it does raise some concerns. You must remember, the Hold does prove to chancy target. One with a good head on their shoulders and the guts to do so could easily slip in without much suspicion. And I'm concerned about the medicine supply. If what you day is true, Chrys, they're stealing our primary source of my wares, along with Healer hall's. It could be a risk we're taking that could hurt us in the future."

  • Are we late?

That dimwitted question caused the rider to slap his own forehead with his palm, grunting with displeasure when the question had been asked twice previously as it was. ’Yes, Aeruth. We’re late. Thanks for reminding me.’ He was running now that he knew how late he really was. Getting sleep for the first time in many days apparently was definitely showing since he had overslept his usual time of waking up and now was running late on everything. It made him wonder why he slept at all, but the wingleader knew he’d need to figure out a better sleeping schedule if he was going to do anything on time. Man, he was not happy when he was running late.

Venny? Venny, are you sure we're late?

V’ence paused, brushing down his shirt in hopes of looking at least a little prepared. He breathed in deeply, postponing his dragon’s question as he walked into the room, ears quickly taking in the bickering and barking of people. ’Nope. Apparently we’re right on time.’ The wingleader carefully listened into a few points, biting his tongue since he knew very little about the actual situation. Well, not that it took too long to catch on. Rumors it seemed like, but rumors that did cause some distress. Uh oh... Venny, I don't like this very much... sounds scary. V’ence nodded to himself, reaching out mentally to soothe his worried steed.

Hearing the bickering made the man look away for a second, pondering how it could possibly go down. Either option would cause trouble whether it was trouble from within or from the outside. There would be no safe path here. However, the idea of needing such caution seemed a bit radical. The whers were strong, the people even stronger. A few minor bandits couldn’t harm them, could they? But as the man slipped forward through the people, he did catch onto what X’hic had to say. There was nothing more true than keeping a good eye on other materials. This is silly, V'ence. They know the Weyr could pounce any silly bandits at a heart's beat! Teehee, silly bandits think they can do that!

The wingleader hesitated when he thought about that, already seeing Aeruth mock pouncing or something on his ledge. It was true, there’d only be stupid people that could dare attack the mines when the Weyr would lunge to protect its sources in a moment’s notice. “You know,” he spoke up, bringing his voice above a few others. “Perhaps even keeping one rider there to watch isn’t a bad thing. We don’t want to swarm the mines with guards. Just a bluerider or something can stay and alert us if anything happens. We need more people here in the Weyr to prepare for Thread, as O’zen said.” V’ence cleared his throat, hoping to not have been overly rude by listening into the fellow bronzerider’s words.

“Still,” he added as a final note, “X’hic is also right. We can’t just ignore it, especially when now you bring in things such as medicine. One guard, a messenger in a sense should something go down. That’s all we need that way we won’t get in the miners’ hair anymore than what seems to be planned.”

The hold and mine was strong. No way would anybody be silly enough to risk another attack when whers and dragons could easily appear around any corner. Aeruth mentally nudged him back warmly, glad his rider had spoken up what was on his mind. Hey! Hey! V'encey! Venny, Venny, tell them I said hi, will you? He bit back a sigh and tried to grit his teeth when he heard that voice and its immature request. ’Maybe later, Aeruth.’

Chrys had thought that someone might not believe her, but to have Pertor-- technically, her new master-- publicly call her a fool was enough to melt all her nervousness and boil it into shame. Her pale skin reddened and she shrank back, an impressive feat since she was already so small-- and she clammed up quickly. Luckily for her, the riders all began arguing amongst themselves. She was left to stand silently while the shame Pertor had brought curdled inside her.

Chrys? Chrsk was sleeping-- it was nowhere near dusk-- but the force of emotion his handler was feeling brought him into groggy wakefulness.Chrys angry.

No, she wasn't angry, but it was useless to pretend she wasn't upset at all, not when Chrsk could so clearly feel the difference. I'm not in trouble, she said with as much soothing as she could muster. Already anxious by being so near dragons, being verbally attacked just for delivering a message didn't help her state of nerves.

She jumped badly when Merilla addressed her, but the candidate master wasn't asking her for anything other than confirmation. She nodded her head once.

Al'dai cleared his throat. "Ladies, gentleman," he said warily, feeling more sympathetic than ever for Rhyssone, who had to run these meetings consistently. "We already post a watchdragon at the Hold and a guard at the mine, don't forget." He paused and glanced at Chrys. "The issue isn't whether we need to keep doing it; of course we'll continue to stand guard over both locations."

He glanced at Pertor and then away again inscrutably. "If bandits attacked at the mine right now, the miners would probably hold their own. The same is probably true at the Hold. But would it be easy to repel the attack? Would we lose anyone while trying to mobilize?" He glanced at Taiori. A more vigilant guard, with firestone, might deter them but he couldn't be sure. "Chrys, why do you think they'll come to the mine exactly? There's plenty of other wagon trains for them to attack."

Chrys, still red-faced and shrinking, tried to summon up courage at being put on the spot again. "Virtan isn't a small train," she said haltingly. "Not a typically weak target. The bandits were together in a really big group... so I think that's why they thought they could take on a whole train. It wasn't just a few bandits." She didn't want to explain how she was close with the train's top performing acrobats, or how they were part of the council, so she had found out what they had found out. Instead she squared her shoulders. "We captured one bandit," she said clearly. "He was... forced to tell us what was happening. He wasn't really important or anything, a leader or... however they were organized. He didn't know anything specific, he just said they were doing a few last raids until they could hit somewhere big. Supposedly they would make enough money to get back in a hold." At least, the man had thought so; but then, Setina and Berlon had seemed to think the main was delusional anyway. Chrys had left the train for different reasons, but she had brought Virtan's warning with her. They had heard it from the mouth of a tortured and delusional bandit; nothing concrete, but in Igen plains, there wasn't much else that would make bandits rich enough to become holders again. Copper was extremely rare, and the mines at Vaioa were extremely profitable.

Al'dai watched Chrys lapse into silence and looked over at the others, sitting back down once more.

Pertor pursed his lips hard as the dragonriders went into their individual spiels. O'zen agreed with Taiori. Merilla was on his side. X'hic thought they were easy prey. V'ence liked the idea of increasing the guard. Al'dai made some more points, then let the bluehandler pipe back up. Things were feeling jumbled and nonsensical. The Masterminer couldn't help himself, but he was beginning to feel a touch guilty about how he had reacted at first. Perhaps he was being over emotional, but- Chrys mentioned something about a "bandit leader" just then. Pertor cleared his throat hard and sat up straighter. No. This was over the line.

"Gentlemen, I will not say this again. I refuse to entertain these fanciful notions of organized crime crawling from the hills. Keep your sharding wingriders and practice for thread. The Mine will keep itself. Do what you want with the Hold and its herbs. That is none of my business."

With a heavy sigh, Pertor sat back again. His hand stroked Nugget's neck absentmindedly as she chittered nervously. He knew he wasn't, but he was starting to feel too old for this.

Taiori frowned a little when Pertor seemed to think he had finished with them all. He sure made himself comfortable like he had. It wasn't good enough for the copperrider, however, and she knew it wouldn't be good enough for the rest of the riders at the table. Taiori felt the heat of frustration rising in her, but the Wingsecond kept her voice in check. She always did.

"Your pride is not worth your miner's lives, Masterminer. It isn't hard for you to sit here and offer them up as bait. Perhaps you might realize how craven you've been when a holdless knife is nicking at your yellow gullet, but we're not here to teach you a lesson in discretion."

After chiding the Masterminer, Taiori turned her gaze on the bronzeriders in the room. "The Wingleaders will make a decision to post more riders if they so choose. We prepare for thread every day, but the threat of bandit attack is perhaps worth our effort as well. All of us could give a few of our free candlemarks to protect the Mine and Hold. I've encountered men not dissimilar to those the bluehandler describes. Taking precautions would be wise."
