Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The sun soared overhead and Sorrin rolled away from it with a grunt as it peeked out from behind a cloud. As far as summer days in Southern Boll went, this one was decidedly mild. Which was why he'd ventured from the Hold for the first time in ages. There was no one with him, but he'd packed a picnic basket and spread a cloth across the ground. His meal had been eaten long ago, but the basket had been filled mostly with treats for his ladies; all ten of them.

The basket itself jerked and twitched occasionally, emitting curious squeaks and squawks and the occasional warning hiss. There was enough meat in the thing to feed a whole beach full of fire lizards, but Sorrin knew they'd manage to polish it off somehow. It wasn't like he fed most of them every day; Jewel and Trouble never left his side, but the others generally swept out his window and out over the ocean and came back smelling of salt and fish.

Today, for whatever reason, he'd felt like relaxing outside, something that was very rare for him. When he'd suggested the idea of a picnic to his mother, she'd nearly teared up she'd been so excited. Decidedly less so when she'd realized he wouldn't be bringing anyone but his fire lizards with him, but she'd still been happy enough to order him the requested meat.

Sorrin sighed, stretched out as far as he could, and cradled a fire lizard in each hand. He felt the weight of at least five more settle on top of him, and more still curl up against his legs or next to his face. Let people talk, let his mother worry that he wasn't being “properly sociable”. Today was perfect.

The Anxious One!
Setra had been bored that day and decided that instead of bathing Samith in the cold water of the water cavern, she would slip over to Southern Boll and swim in the warmer waters. And if she enjoyed a small nap after, then she didn’t mind.

Samith stretched on her ledge, looking at her rider who was busy gathering things for their little day trip. The waters here are not that cold! And anyway what about my cuddle time? she said, slightly whining. She didn’t want to move, she was comfortable where she was.

Setra looked at her dragon, and shook her head, I don’t like freezing like you do! And if you insist on always getting me wet then we are going were I won’t catch my death from a cold! Besides the boys will still be here when you get back! she said, returning to grab the last few things.

Samith huffed at her rider, standing to stretch like a feline.

Setra grabbed her harness and got her green ready to go, though there was much grumbling on Samith’s part. She made sure her bag of oil was secure along with her blanket for napping on. She put on her swimming clothes, then put her flying leathers on over them. Once she was ready she climbed up onto Samith and strapped on. Lets go love, Sooner we leave the sooner we get back.

Samith still huffed at her rider, before she stood back up to walk to her ledge. She took off, gaining height slowly, once she was at the right height she told the watch dragon where they were going and went between to Southern Boll.

Over Southern Boll Samith angled to fly to the beach, flying low. She saw a human laying stretched out on the ground on a blanket, her shadow covering him for a moment before she headed to land on the beach. She felt something from that human, though she hadn’t been close enough to be sure. Did you see that person laying out in the sun? Her mood had shifted, her head raised to look in the direction of the young man.

Setra unclipped and slid down to the ground, looking at her green. Not really, no I was looking at the water ahead of us. Why? She said, quickly unharnessing her dragon, letting it slide to the ground in a heap.

Samith turned once she was released from her harness. She took a few steps in the direction of the man, her whole demeaner changed. She practically vibrated with her concetration.

Stop it! Nosy! Go get wet so I can get you clean! Setra scolded, pulling off her jacket.

OOC shaffiting dragon wont let her just clean her XD

A shadow passed over him and Sorrin cracked an eye open, disturbed and then fascinated for a moment as a green dragon passed overhead. Heading to the hold or...ah, probably the beach. He was feeling far too boneless and lazy to turn his head and following the pair, as lovely as the dragon's elegant shape was. Greens were his favorite of course, a carry-over from his love of their tiny cousins. But even green dragons were respected and considered useful. Green fire lizards were considered mostly useless by the majority of Pern.

Well more for him and less for the close-minded idiots, he supposed. He closed his eyes again and let the gentle afternoon sun wash over him and soaked up the warmth of his fire lizards.

All of a sudden, Jewl and Trouble stirred on his shoulders. Breeze sat up and squeaked and Pitch and Summer added excited chitters to a growing chorus that soon became too loud and insistent to ignore. Another shadow fell across Sorrin, and this time it was larger, more immediate. The holder opened his eyes and found himself reflected a thousand – no – a million times over in facets of iridescent blue and green. And it was that green that filled his vision and set his fire lizards astir. He lay motionless, a part in shock but mostly frozen with uncertainty.

Slowly, he cleared his throat and managed what he hoped was a sufficiently polite smile and tone of voice. “Can I help you, Green Lady?”

The Anxious One!
Setra would have tried to stop her dragon from bugging the young man, but her green had other ideas. She half dropped, half tossed her jacket on the ground, knowing her green wouldn’t do as she was told until she was satisfied.

Samith looked down at the man, her eyes spinning faster. She rumbled in a light dragon laugh at his words and said to both him and her rider, He should stand! He’s right! She looked over her shoulder at her rider, huffing at her.

Setra let out a frustrated sigh, her head falling back in defeat. She walked over to the side of her dragon, looking over the man. “You have been found fit to stand for a clutch when they are laid on the sands at Vaioa Weyr.” She said, slightly glaring at her green. She crossed her arms over her chest, she might have only been wearing a swimming top and her flight pants, but she didn’t care so long as she could get her Sharding green to take a bath.

Samith crooned to her little green cousins, liking the sea of green. She settled down onto the ground near him and, watching him with one large eye, and said A dragon would be most happy with you! She didn’t care she was irritating her rider, she had found a suitable candidate without even being told to search for a candidate.

Were he not already on it, Sorrin would have fallen on his ass in shock. For one, he hadn't expected the green to actually respond – didn't dragons only talk to their riders? - and her words and that of the woman that followed her were like a punch to the gut. He wheezed in astonishment, as if he had been punched after all, and blinked stupidly up at the duo, quite at a loss for words for once in his comfortable, predictable life.

The green fire lizards gathered on and around him were all aflutter, crooning and singing, chittering and abandoning his warmth to land on the dragon and her rider, curiosity winning out over their protective instincts. Only Trouble and Jewel remained with him as he slowly sat up and put a hand to his chest, rubbing at the sudden ache there. Racer and Pitch had taken up new posts on the rider's shoulders, sniffing at unfamiliar scents and chirping questions at her. Spruce perched on the green dragon's nose and stared down at him, looking altogether too happy with what had quickly evolved into a regrettable situation.

“P-Pardon me?” Sorrin managed at last, after a few embarrassing choking attempts at speech. His voice squeaked as if he were on the cusp of puberty and not far, far beyond it. “Good lord, I'm sorry, I'm afraid I've just woken from a nap and I have something crazy clogging my ears. You couldn't have just said what I think I heard. My brains must have dribbled into the grass while I slept, Lady, forgive me.”

He ventured a hand out to touch the green dragon's nose, audacious as always and unafraid of injury. He was educated enough to know that dragons did not willingly harm humans and she seemed placid enough. If insane. “Let's try a proper conversation, shall we? I am Sorrin, and these are my ladies. What brings you to Southern Boll?”

He'd elected to dismiss what he'd heard; after all the best way to avoid ones problems was to refuse to acknowledge them in the first place, right?

Setra saw the shock cross his face and guessed that her dragon had relayed her message to him as well as to her. She huffed back at her dragon, looking at the hoard of green firelizards that covered not only herself but her dragon as well. She tried to not show amusement at his surprise, having always found it funny.

Samith rested her head on the ground watching him closely. She rumbled at her cousins, then rumbled louder at his words. You heard just fine, you are able to attract a Hatchling. Wouldn’t you love to have a larger cousin to your pretties?

Setra couldn’t stop the grin slipping onto her face. “We came here so that I could bathe her without freezing to death, in the water cavern at Vaioa Weyr. I was not my intention to come here in search, but I will have to tell the Lord Holder before I return home” she said, taking note of his name. She would need to remember it to tell the holder so she didn’t seem like she was poaching in their territory.

Samith’s eyes spun with amusement, noticing he was trying to ignore the situation he was in. My name is Samith and My riders name is Setra. She said, introducing herself and her rider.

“We are a Search pair and Wingrider pair to Marble Wing, at Vaioa Weyr.” Setra finished the introduction, adding her rank since she didn’t have her knots on at the moment.

There was that word again; she just kept using it!

Sorrin's carefully composed expression turned a bit sour for a moment, his lips pursing and his brow furrowing a telltale sign of his building anxiety. Trust something like this to happen on the one day he went out. He knew he should have stayed inside.

On his shoulder Jewel shifted, hissed quietly, and then calmed when he ran a placating finger down her spine. Troublesome or not, it would not do to insult a dragonrider, especially one who Southern Boll was not beholden to; it could cause a diplomatic incident, even Sorrin knew that.

“Ah,” he said carefully, slowly. “While that is certainly...exciting – just absolutely tremendous, Miss – I'm afraid you'll have to talk to my father.” A sweet smile slithered slyly onto his face. “He'd be loathe to let me go, you see. I'm very important to the family business.”

He stood, brushed himself off, and several more fire lizards came to rest on him, glittering living decorations blinking at the green rider with eyes like tiny emeralds. It would be terribly rude for him to say 'Piss off, I don't want to fight thread', but his father would be happy to do that for him in a much more diplomatic way. Most likely, he'd grease the dragonrider's palms with some marks to help her forget she'd ever met Sorrin and send her on her way.

His smile turned into a grin. Sorrin left the picnic basket and blanket where they lay and gestured grandly back toward the hold. “The Lord Holder need not be bothered. Shall we go have a conversation?”

The Anxious One!
Setra tried to keep her face neutral as she noticed him get a bit flustered. She wouldn’t let on how much she was enjoying watching him be uncomfortable.

She saw the green on his shoulder hiss at her and her lips twitched ever so slightly. Samith would not let any firelizard harm her and knew it. She could tell his mind was turning and could feel his insincerity about it being so exciting he had been searched. She felt a deep need to see just what his father wanted, his young man could do with a lot of hard work that came with being a candidate.

She put on a smile, trying to irritate him ever so slightly. “I would love to meet your father and tell him that his son has such potential!” she said, grabbing her jacket and pulling it on. She buttoned her jacket so she looked presentable, though a little hot.

The dimglow could just say he doesn’t want to be searched. she said to her green, passing along her humor at the situation.

Samith rumbled at her rider’s words saying, One would think he would want to try to impress a green dragon, though I think he is softer than I am. Her term softer implied that she was a little pudgy for a dragon, but she wasn’t sporting any more weight then she could handle and fly fall.

She stood up and went to follow her rider and ‘Sorrin’ to the Hold, also wanting to see the out come of this conversation.

Such potential.

Sorrin resisted a self-deprecating sneer only with great effort. What kind of potential did dragon and rider see when they looked at him? He'd been laying in the sun, the absolute picture of indolence. If only the green could see into his past and know that he was a professional slacker for a living and quite enjoyed things that way. If ever he found the need to fight Thread, he had a green army to do it for him.

Southern Boll was beautiful, and to Sorrin's heart there could be no other true home to him. He thought longingly of his suite of rooms with their piles of pillows and reading benches. There was a stunning view from his window that he indulged in most of the day and, since he was situated above the kitchens, the smell of fresh pastries and meat wafting enticingly into his room.

He steered away from this with regret, although he did pause briefly to favor the green dragon with an extravagant bow. “I'm sorry, Miss Green,” he said with what he hoped was a sufficient amount of regret in his tone, “I'm afraid you cannot follow us inside. Please enjoy the sun in the courtyard, I'm sure this will not take long. This way, Rider.”

This time of day, the halls were mostly empty. Activity would pick back up towards the evening as dinner preparations were made and the sun mercifully dipped below the horizon, providing much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat. For now, there were few enough to see Sorrin with a rider trailing behind him that he might not need to worry about any unsavory rumors for the time being. He lead Setra in silence to an ornate door and knocked once.

“Come in,” came a gruff voice from within. Sorrin smiled. His father sounded like he was in a bad mood, which could only work in his favor. The trader wasn't famously foul-tempered, but he had a sharp tongue when roused. Perhaps he could bring it to bear on this situation and make it...disappear.

“Father, we have a guest,” Sorrin said in a sing-songing tone, swinging the gilded door open and mincing into the room. His fair of fire lizards settled about the room on shelves and windowsils and watched the scene with great interest. Sorrin's eyes were briefly pleading but he replaced the expression with one he hoped conveyed respect before Setra could become offended. “This is Setra of Green Samith,” he introduced, “From Vaioa Weyr. They are here on important business. Rider, this is my father, Ooren.”

Ooren was much more solidly built than his son. He stood at a respectable height for a man and was quite broad-chested and intimidating in appearance. His skin was sun-warn and freckled excessively and deep lines were cut by age and stress into his features. Still, there was a kind light deep in his green eyes and a cunning that had served him well over the years. He stood, abandoning his paperwork on his desk and crossed the room in three strides to offer a strong, surprisingly callused hand to Setra. His eyes flickered quickly to his son and back but his expression remained serious and businesslike. “Well met, dragonrider. What kind of important business brings you my way? Of course, I will be happy to be of aid to a Weyr.”

For a price, Sorrin thought with a smirk.

The Anxious One!
Setra watched him practically strutting as he led her to his father. A good boot in the tailfork might do him some good, but it wasn’t her place to do it.

She flipped her hair back over her shoulders, making sure she looked presentable. At least her rank cords were on her jacket, she thought wryly to herself. You couldn’t have left alone, could you? she said tartly to her dragon.

No, it is my job to find candidates. Even if it interrupts you giving me a bath. Samith said, stopping to sit in the court yard, wrapping her tail around her feet. She enjoyed his name for her, taking it as a sort of flattery. Ill be watching with you. This could be most amusing.

Setra followed him threw the Hold. She heard the gruff voice on the other side of the door that he had knocked on, and steadied her nerves. She tried to keep a straight face at Sorrin’s tone to his father; wondering what he was up too.

She studied his father, feeling more comfortable about his measure. Here was a man who wasn’t afraid of working. She offered her hand to him, shaking it with a firm grip. “Well met too you, Sir.” She replied, retrieving her hand from him and stood at parade rest. “I came to Southern to use the wonderful warm waters of the beaches. We were coming to land, when my dragon alerted me to a disturbance. She was adamant and meeting your son, and has found him to be a suitable candidate for a clutch at Vaioa.” she explained, studying him and his reaction.

She slightly shuffled her feet as she said, ”It was not my intention to search anyone today, but when a dragon gets an idea into their head; they can be hard to dissuade them.”
