Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The jungle was never quiet. At all hours of the day it was filled with the raucous calls of insects and wherries, the light sound of wings on the air, things scrambling through the underbrush, or the wind sighing and shuffling through the broadleaf trees. Occasionally a firelizard could be seen darting overhead, chasing bugs through the branches, or singing their trilling songs. But Jerund—Jerund almost never made a sound.

Easy though it was to be taken in by the lush beauty of the jungle, its dangers were always on his mind, more so now that he had experienced so many of them. What was even more unsettling was that many of the jungle's more dangerous creatures moved silently. Jerund strained to listen through the din, but mostly had to rely on Jerusk's keener senses.

As it was, the wher was totally relaxed.

Trusting his wher, Jerund glanced at the sun hanging high overhead and swiveled in his saddle to look back at Kalser. "It must be past noon. Ready for lunch?" Without waiting for an answer—Jerund could almost guarantee it would be an emphatic yes—he nudged Jerusk to the left, toward the nearby river. It ran slow and deep in this part of the jungle. With it at their backs, it would be easier to keep watch while they ate. To actually relax for a moment or two. Feeling warm and drowsier than a patrolman had any right to be, presently all he wanted to do was lean against Kalser and take a nap.

That would just have to wait until they made it back to Cove.

Kalser didn't mind jungle patrols. Or, rather, he kept trying to convince himself that he didn't. In a strange way, he was starting to miss the desert he had spent most of his life rambling around in. Everything here was so thick, so green, so--he couldn't ever find the words to describe it. There was no quiet, not like the seemingly endless nights out in the open outskirts of Vaioa. Even as long as he had spent here in the South, now, he still hadn't quite gotten used to it. Especially with the constant threat of about five-thousand different species of native wildlife that would be more than happy to tear them all apart at a moment's notice.

Kask liked that part. Every day was a new chance to battle something interesting. He enjoyed the cunning of felines, the power of the native 'snakes, and he loved chasing the native craterlizards and the imported firelizard population when he got the chance. Everything was new, and everywhere he went, he felt like a proper king among whers. He trotted along behind Jerusk, content to allow his partner to blaze their trail as he let his nose pick up the innumerable scents of potential prey.

Kalser rolled his eyes at his wher's fleeting inner thoughts, starting to get annoyed by the constant low-radar alerts for small animals the black would have loved to rip apart. Thank Faranth for Jerund; he finally turned around from Jerusk's back and mentioned the idea of lunch, to which Kalser let out an appreciative groan.

"Oh, shards, yeah," he grumbled, rolling his shoulders. "It is most definitely lunchtime." Kask snorted as he turned to follow Jerusk off the trail, letting out a low grumble. He would rather have hunted than go and laze by the river. He was getting fat and lumpy--in all the worst ways.

"Ah, quit complainin'," Kalser muttered to his wher, patting Kask firmly on the massive shoulder. "We'll go for a hunt later, I promise."

Kask snorted again, then resigned himself with a quick flicker of red annoyance in his eyes to another lazy day of patrols. Still... didn't mean he couldn't enjoy himself a little bit.

Jerusk. Run to water. Last one stinky wherry-egg, he challenged, tossing his massive head and baring his teeth in a fierce imitation of a grin.

"What? No, come on--we're just going to have a pic--niiiiiic!"

Kalser didn't have time to finish his complaint; his wher was already off, rushing toward the river resting place with his rider clinging to his neck. All he wanted was a relaxing picnic with Jerund, sharddit! Well... maybe his wher would finally calm down a bit once he got all this restless running out of him--if he didn't run them straight into the sharding river, first.

Am not stinky wherry-egg! Jerusk declared, and then he was off like a shot, nearly unseating Jerund with his sudden burst of speed. Whers, for all their bulk, could be shockingly fast, and all Jerund could do was dig his knees into Jerusk's side and cling to the saddle. The world passed in a blur of green, but up ahead loomed the wide blue expanse of the river.

"Jerusk, stop!" But Jerund's cry was too little too late, for even if Jerusk had heeded him, his momentum would have carried him into the water a split second later anyway. As it was, the brown rushed into the river with glee, and was up to his shoulders in three splashing bounds. There he stopped, and turned back to face the shore.

Did we win? Did you see?

"I don't know, I wasn't watching," Jerund said crossly, wiping the water from his face. The river was already busily filling his boots and tugging at the fabric of his pant legs, but Jerusk's splashing had dampened almost everything else. Grimacing at the sensation, he twisted in the saddle to check the saddlebag, where he kept the meatrolls he had so carefully packed for lunch. Only the very bottom hung in the water. Jerund blew out a sigh.

"Lunch should be fine," he called to Kalser. "Jerusk, please get out of the river." The brown was still wallowing contentedly, and didn't seem very inclined to move.

Did you see, Kask? Who won?

Kask snorted with amusement as the other wher took off, completely tickled by the expression of the brown's usually stoic handler. He ran after the brown, ignoring Kalser's complaining as he stretched his muscles and pushed himself faster still. Who won the race honestly did not matter; he had nothing to prove to Jerusk, after all. The most important part was getting some decent exercise--and shaking up those fool humans that always thought that they were in charge.

He dug in his heels just before they ran headlong into the river, and he let out an odd burbling rumble that sounded almost like a laugh as he shook his giant head. The sight of Jerusk happily splashing about with a sopping Jerund on his back was just too much.

Yes, Jerusk win, Kask acquiesced, turning to find a comfortable spot to lay down--and Kalser barely had enough time to scramble from his wher's back before the beast lay down on top of him. A good run.

Kalser glowered at his wher a moment, then let out a long sigh as he looked to Jerund in the river. He had to stifle a laugh as the poor man tried to figure out what hadn't gotten wet in Jerusk's joyful dash into the river.

"Well, at least the food's all right," Kalser called back, grinning. "You, uh... need a hand out of there?" Another half-laugh escaped him, despite his best efforts not to.

"Hang on, I'll come help get the food out, anyway," he said, pulling off his boots and tossing them aside along with his riding jacket before wading into the shallower part of river. The water was surprisingly cool, and he found his teeth chattering a bit the further he waded in.

Wherry-head going to catch cold, Kask rumbled, squinting his single eye at his handler as he shifted a bit closer to the edge of the river.

Jerusk bugled triumphantly at Kask's acquiescence and reared, forcing Jerund to cling to the saddle once more, and came down with another splash. I win! Kask is stinky wherry egg!

"I agree," Jerund muttered to himself, shooting an icy glare toward the black. Maybe it was just his imagination—it was certainly difficult to tell with thick, gnarled wher faces—but Kask looked entirely too smug where he lay on the bank, perfectly dry. He did not look disappointed in the slightest at his loss. And Kalser was grinning, the traitor. Jerund refocused his glare on him instead, until the man started pulling off his boots.

"Oh, Kalser, you don't have to—" But Kalser was already wading in, and Jerund gave a frustrated sigh. "Look, Jerusk will go back in a moment, I'm sure, and—" He cut off as Jerusk lurched into motion, ambling up to Kalser. Jerusk stopped in front of the wherry-haired man and nosed him playfully on one shoulder, but went no further, still content to stay in the river. It was cool, and they had been walking for an awfully long time, and it felt good.

Jerund sighed again, this time with a resigned look down at the swirling water. He eyed the level. It was closer to shore, at least, and he was already soaked past the knees. Judging by Jerusk's current temperament, this was the best chance he was going to get. He swung off, dropped, and gasped.

"Oh, Faranth!" It was about a foot deeper than he expected, up to his hips instead of mid-thigh, and he grabbed at Kalser's arm for balance.
