Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Misery. There was no other word for it, although Piper didn't want to admit it. It sounded so melodramatic. But that's what it was.

She'd never been one to drink, except the occasional celebratory libation variety. But lately she was beginning to understand why some people were driven to drink. Why some people felt like there was no escape other than drinking.

She had slightly enough sense to not bring alcohol, full and sloshing, into the Candidate Barracks. (Not that the Candidate Masters seemed to mind a bit of mulled wine in the winter evenings, but still.) So it was that she was tucked into a corner of the dining hall, glowering down into a cup of brandy.

She wasn't drinking, really. At least not much. She was sipping the stuff on and off, but she wasn't drinking it quickly enough to be drunk yet. Maybe, if she consumed the entire cup. But for now she was content to sit in the shadows, and muse over life, and glower. The burn of the brandy down her throat every time she took a sip suited her perfectly.

It was just... everything lately was piling up, and Piper didn't even know where to start. Maybe, maybe, if she'd had the sense to parse the problems one by one and resolve them as they came up. But she didn't. Everything was just overwhelming.

First and most obvious was the matter of her broken ankle. And Piper really wasn't the clumsy sort. But it was inescapable when you had a cast as big as a boot wrapped around your leg. It would be coming off soon (finally), but it had kept her miserable for long enough. Stumping around on crutches everywhere was no way to live. Not to mention that she hadn't been able to go running for months, which would be enough to make anyone miserable. But then there was Fort.

The fact was, being a rider was dangerous. But she'd known that when she accepted her Search. That was the nature of the job; Thread was a deadly, horrifying menace, and while it was sometimes easy to forget that, she'd be confronting it every day if she did manage to Impress. And she was prepared for that.

Fort was an entirely new level of horrifying. Just thinking the name Fort made Piper begin to squirm in discomfort, as though Vaioa, too, were a ticking time bomb that could explode at any moment. Despite the many professionals, Crafters, and riders who had assured the Weyr that they were safe, Piper was not entirely soothed.

And that wasn't even addressing the horrific tragedy of the thing. It was a vastness and a greatness beyond anything Piper could comprehend. It left her speechless. An entire Weyr's worth of people and dragons had just been... destroyed. In one moment. Gone. Piper didn't even know how to wrap her mind around a horror so large. There was no way to understand all of those lives that had been snuffed out in one instant. No way to accept the complexities of those people, their likes and dislikes, their troubles, their joys, the dramas and peace that had ruled their lives. All gone, and now nothing. What was the point?

What was the point of any of it?

Finally, there was the one matter which Piper did not want to admit, most of all. It was the fact that, the morning of the Fort disaster, when she'd been out for a run, and had been caught in the psychic blast of all of the distressed dragons of the Weyr... she had been afraid. She had been in the greatest agony she'd felt in her entire life, and she'd been so scared that she'd been shaken to the core. She hadn't known what to do.

She'd thought-- everyone knew-- that dragons couldn't hurt people. And although dragons were big (some much moreso than others), she'd never felt afraid of them, not once. Cautious and respectful when meeting a new one, no doubt. They were basically people too, when it came down to it. They had thoughts and feelings, were intelligent and able to carry on a conversation. Piper had a healthy respect for them. (More than that; a near-obsessive admiration. Like many candidates.) But after Fort...

Piper knew, in a removed place, that it hadn't been on purpose. None of the dragons of the Weyr had targeted her. They were simply expressing their agony at having felt the entire population of Fort vanish at once into nothingness. The same existential dread that now haunted her as well.

But it still gave Piper pause, and in that pause, doubts crept in. She'd never realized how horrible it would feel to feel the pain and terror and horror of another. She had always fancied herself a compassionate and sensitive individual; after all, she was prone to leaping into the fray to defend anyone who needed help. But the fact was, she'd never felt what another felt, not in that literal way. Sympathizing with or empathizing with another person was still feeling their emotions at an arm's length. With a dragon, it wasn't filtered from someone else's expressions at all. It was right there, in your mind itself. There had been no filter. It had been agony and despair pouring into her with such strength that she had been momentarily blinded.

Piper would have been lying through her teeth if she had said it hadn't shaken her, even a little.

The truth was that now, Piper didn't know if she could handle it after all. She thought she'd known what being a rider entailed. She'd thought that she'd known what she was signing up for. She thought that she'd be able to handle Thread when time came, and the rigors of being a rider, and the responsibility of living in a Weyr. But it turned out that she'd never even wondered the basic question: Could she handle being bonded to a dragon?

She'd heard it plenty of times by now (of course). There was absolutely no way to describe it, but the closest a rider could get was that a dragon was like a best friend; it was like a permanent sense of belonging; it was the knowledge that you would never be alone in the world again. It was the knowledge that the depth of love was limitless.

None of that meant very much to Piper. It sounded great-- beyond great. No doubt it was life-changing, as so many riders declared. But then... feeling the pain of another so intensely was mortifying. Never mind that she had felt the cries of more than fifty dragons at once. It had been too much to handle, and frankly, Piper didn't know if she could handle it again. Or wanted to.

So she continued to drink. Elsewhere in the dining hall, near one of the hearths, a rousing game of dragon poker was being played. Occasional good-natured swearing and shouts punctuated the hall. But Piper had no interest in joining them. What was the point? What was the point of life, of anything? She'd rather stay in the shadows and brood.

"Now that's a path of no return, right there."

And one that proved a constant temptation for Kirran personally, though he was just self-assured enough to enjoy the satisfaction that came with being around an addiction and not succumbing to it. For the moment, anyway.

Interesting, though, how it wasn't tempting him at the present. Might later on, especially if he hung about, but right, right now? It wasn't calling for him with its usual alacrity. Or likely, it was, and he was just finding other means and ways of letting it out for the time being. Unfortunately, gambling didn't hold for him quite the sway it did for others, so that was out, and sleep was about as likely as him shaving his head clean of every hair it possessed at present, with the way his stomach was still acting up.

Maybe that was the real reason he wasn't drinking, if he thought long and hard about it. Which he definitely sharding well would not be doing, because he didn't feel like philosophising much lately as it was. And definitely not over a sick stomach.

It was sick because he'd vomited and he'd vomited because he hadn't expected, even with the familiarity that was his brother's Chelyth hanging in his head on occasion and the fardling Candidate Master's dragons invading at will, the complete and utter chaos of the mind that was somewhere upwards in the hundreds of dragons going off their tree in carrying, lingering, all-consuming grief.

It was like being overwhelmed by...well, your own grief. Except it hadn't been his own grief at all, really, and that was what bothered Kirran the most.

Of course, he didn't know Piper beyond a casual acquaintance...but it was just enough for him to know her, and just casual enough that the prospect of prodding at her to amuse himself (instead of drinking, or worrying over his health, or whatever) wasn't something that made Kirran feel overly bad as far as being a bad person went.

Hence the remark.

But then he'd actually ducked his head enough to see her face...and while he hadn't felt quite bad yet, it was so similar to the look K'rris wore almost constantly that Kirran couldn't help but sigh heavily. His boots scraped against the floor as he swivelled on his heel, before folding himself somehow with something like grace on to the bench beside her.

"Never mind, short stuff. Drink as much as you want, if it's going to get rid of that face."

"'lo, Kirran," Piper replied automatically as he drifted into her field of vision and swung himself onto the bench next to her. Then his other words caught up with her and she shot him a look of indignation. "Short stuff?"

She didn't know for sure if she'd ever spoken to Kirran one-on-one, at least not outside the usual exchanging of pleasantries and casual chit-chat that most candidates had engaged with at one point or another while waiting for lessons to start. He'd always been the polite but distant sort; friendly but with a sheen that deterred anything deeper. Piper had come to recognize this among many of her classmates, actually. Some of them out-and-out kept to themselves and didn't like being approached, and then some of them were like her-- outgoing, eager to chat and make connections and forge friendships and all the nonsense that had once seemed important to her. And then there were those like Kirran, the halfway ones, the ones who were friendly when approached but didn't seem to have that same interest in seeking out bonds and friendships and everything. At the moment, Piper couldn't remember why she had been, either.

At any rate, she definitely wasn't friendly enough with him to use nicknames.

His greeting finally caught up with her, and she snorted, looking away. A part of her wanted a path of no return, even though that part was tempered by a steadier voice that said to take her time because she still had lessons to attend the next day. No sense making yourself too hungover to get out of bed.

But there was still that urge. If she couldn't get out of bed, then she wouldn't have to see everybody, and wouldn't have to think about... everything.

Or maybe, said an uncomfortably wise voice, you'll just have to think about it while lying in bed feeling miserable instead.

Phooey to that.

Piper grimaced and took another swallow, this one more aggressive than the last. If she couldn't escape her introspection, she should at least be able to escape her conscience.

"Care to join me?" She finally said, raising her cup in a halfhearted offer and shooting Kirran a look. He was not bad-looking, probably older than her brother, and at the moment Piper didn't care about much else beyond those distinguishing traits. A sudden suspicion began to rise in her mind - an introduction like that, and an uninvited company, could only mean (she was now certain) that he was going to try and get her to stop drinking.

Hah. Like to see 'im try. She wasn't breaking any rules. Wasn't even causing trouble. Was just keeping to herself. She squinted beadily at him. Okay, maybe the alcohol was starting to hit her.

"An' what's wrong with my face, anyway."

The weather was something he was doing his best to get used too. Vaako didn’t know that this was cooler then what everyone in vaioa knew. To him it was far to warm and most of his clothing was left useless. Vaako didn’t even need to wrap himself in layers to keep warm. It was all an uncomfortable change for him and he truly only has himself to blame. It was his prank that had gone wrong that resulted in his makeshift family to be transferred

Being a transfer after Fort, Vaako thought would get him away from the grief, but he was completely wrong. That day still haunted him and left him having sleepless nights on occasion. Impressing on a dragon was never something he saw in his future. In truth the only reason he agreed to join candidacy was so his makeshift family wouldn’t be torn apart. He didn’t want to become like his parents, but he found himself doing exactly what they had done at his age. He heard stories of how close a bond was between rider and dragon and Vaako felt it in a sense.

The grief was suffocating and Vaako felt himself drowning in it. The panic all the dragons at High Reaches felt was a blow to his gut. It left him cold to his core and some nights not even numerous furs could push away the cold. The disaster at Fort is what caused Vaako to act out on his latest prank that resulted in the brawl. He wanted to do something to lift the mood of his friends. Honestly he would do it all over again just to have that normalcy they all felt.

It was what had him wandering towards the mess hall to conjure another prank in mind. Vaako felt guilty for causing his family to transfer from their home Weyr. He needed some normalcy among all of this new surroundings. He already had a few ideas in mind and he couldn’t wait to discuss them with Raynor and Tava. He did his best to avoid talking about his next pranks with Denina. He could already see her disapproving looks and her scolding no doubt in his mind coming his way. It was that familiarities that helped push back the memory of that day and allowed him to keep moving forward.

He moved through the mess hall with a cup of brandy in his hand. Aqua green eyes scanning over the game of dragon poker. Vaako was no con artist, but on occasion in High Reaches he would dabble in a hidden card up his sleeve. Though the candidates didn’t offer Marks to bet, but other things that was more a necessity as a candidate. He considered joining in on the game, but his eyes caught sight of two other candidates further away by the hearth. He could see them talking and it wouldn’t surprise him if they were friends. He needed to become acquainted with other candidates. Needed to know which of them would be most likely to go to the candidate masters for a prank or which would start a fight.

As he approached the two he knew his bruising on his cheek was a sickly yellowish green color. His limp almost completely gone as well. It no longer hurt him to breathe so that was a plus and the scabbing on his knuckles were all but healed over. He looked like a delinquent on his first impression, there was no doubt in his mind about that. He only heard the end of the conversation and even though the question wasn’t directed at him he thought it was best to answer.

”Your face looks just fine to me.” He grinned at Piper. ”However she is pinching her face which could cause wrinkles.” The last part was directed towards Kirran.

It was a reaction that wasn't the glassy-eyed blankness of drunken-ness, and while Kirran grinned with malicious glee in response to her outrage, it was what he'd wanted in the end. Not a lot bothered him in the long run (and what little bothered him did so quite a bit), but that look did just as badly as the scent of strong alcohol did.

But then Piper had offered him some, and though the smile didn't completely disappear, it did fade quite a bit. He could feel his fingers actually twitching in his lap with something between agitation and longing, and he was both glad and embarrassed for himself inwardly when his fire lizard suddenly popped out of between, crooning with something like his own agitation and her own concern at the troubled yearning she sensed in her human's mind and that passed briefly over the shadows already present in dark eyes as he glanced at what was being offered to him-- unknowingly torturous (and it would stay that way, if he could help it) and offered in a kind of ribald, rough camaraderie, but torturous nonetheless.

Thankfully (and he did indeed thank her, promising to himself to let her eat extra for supper later), Lissy settled herself in his lap, her crooning quieting down as she inserted herself under his twitching hands. Her hide and the feel of it became a welcome distraction, and intrusion far from unwelcome as Kirran's fingers turned instead to the task of scratching behind the little Green's wing joints.

And then--

Two's company, three's a crowd, kid.

Whatever he had been about to say was cut off by what the older Candidate immediately deemed another intrusion (if only because he never liked it when he didn't notice people coming before they were half a foot in front of them), and it was only Turns of practice with his manipulative bully of a sister that kept him from showing outwardly the annoyance that threatened to put a tic in his cheek. He wasn't idiotic enough to start an unnecessary fight, after all, even if he was after amusement. There were less stupid ways to get that.

But Piper was hosting a party rather than easy company now, either way.

"You would know," he said dryly, indicating the fading marks on Vaako's face. "Where's the rest of the 'squad'?"

Mindful of Lissy, he crossed his rangy ankles together, sinking down and allowing his legs to take up more space. Piper seemed intent on getting good and drunk after all, it seemed, so he might as well settle in for the evening. Didn't need to wake up to a body that had gone splat off the cliffs in the morning.

That, or if she was half as feisty as she was already acting, she'd deck someone. Probably the one telling her she had wrinkles, at this point.

"It's a perfectly symmetrical face, frowns and all. But if you're planning on getting sloshed, let me know now--- I'm happy to keep you from falling off a cliff, but I'd rather not the kick to the balls accidental man-handling would get me."

Because she did, he rather thought, seem like the kind to do just that...drunk or not.

Normally, Piper would have welcomed some company. Even Kirran's company would have been grudgingly accepted, suspicious though she was that he was going to begin a long-winded and pointless diatribe to convince her to stop drinking. It's only a regular day and there's no Gather to celebrate and a million other things she could guess, and was ready to argue against.

But the new one-- Vaako-- him and the others who had recently come to the barracks were totally unfamiliar to Piper, and she did not immediately feel pleased to see a new stranger in her presence.

What is this? Come Bother Piper Night?

She couldn't prevent herself from openly staring at the other candidate as he approached, a cup of his own in hand, sporting a visible bruise on his face of all places. Piper was no stranger to bruises, but to the face was not something she'd ever had to endure before. A part of her wondered what he had done to get it-- a blow? A fight?-- but she pushed it away quickly.

Vaako's words aloud caused her to shoot a scowl his way. Who asked you, kid.

Never mind that he looked to be about the same age as Piper herself.

She glanced back at Kirran with a long-suffering gaze upon her face. "No, I don't plan on getting sloshed, thank you very much," she enunciated deliberately. And then, "I only kick if I need to, so don't do anything that needs it and I won't do it." Kirran's response to her offer of a drink was lost on her just them-- she wasn't fully drunk, but even being slightly tipsy could make one less prone to pick up some more subtle things-- but she was cognizant of the firelizard appearing.

"Oh, hello," she said to the Green, dismissively (and unnecessarily). But it rankled. That some firelizard merely existed in her presence was enough to remind her of her brother's success at Impression. She was the one who had wanted to come to a Weyr-- for her entire life-- and he was the one who had found a firelizard. Craterlizard. Whatever.

It was hard not to be bitter.

And with that she glowered at the other two. What was this? What was the point? What was the point of any of it? She already knew that none of them would be able to offer answer, so just then, she couldn't immediately think of any other reason for them to be there.

"So. How can I be of service to you." She stated it flatly, looking from one and then to the other. It wasn't so much a question, although behind it, there was the very real question of, Why are you here and why are you bothering me. Piper was bothered plenty by all sorts of negative thoughts, and it was becoming conveniently harder to focus on those at this point (which had been the intention, but now that she was starting to feel it, she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to), so she did not want to be bothered by anything else. She pointedly set her mug back on the table, far enough away that she would have to reach for it if she wanted another drink. Best take... a small break from it. There was a pleasant warmth in her body already anyway. She could even forget for a moment the cast wrapping around her ankle, which had long since stopped aching and hurting. But there was still something bothering her... some sense of agitation... even if she couldn't quite put her hand on it. She looked askance at Vaako, and then again at Kirran. So what was she supposed to do about these two lunkheads? Was this now Social Hour and Piper had just unwittingly stumbled into the center of what would no doubt be a rousing and thrilling conversation? (She thought sarcastically.) Seriously, though-- neither of these two jokers would probably have any answers for her, so what was the point of their presence? Not that she could quite remember what those questions were anymore.

Vibes. Just because somebody could school their face didn’t mean they didn’t throw out a vibe. Vaako has been around numerous people who didn’t enjoy his presences to know the feeling. A poker face could only go so far.

Even if it was the slightest of negative vibe, Vaako picked up on it and allowed himself to store the information away. Honestly it didn’t bother him one bit whether anyone liked him or not. He wasn’t here to make friends. His little makeshift family was all that mattered to him. Brushing the negativity away as he leaned his tall frame against the table. He crossed his ankles and took a swing of his drink. The burning sensation as the liquor went down his throat was a welcoming experience.

”Nothing wrong with a little blemish, keeps you humble.” He grinned ignoring the dry remark Kirran had made. ”The squad is here and there.” It was rare to see one without the other. Rare to not have at least two of them in a room at the same time, but each and every one of them are were doing recon on the Weyr. Making sure they had all the ins and outs of the place.

He rose his drink to his lips, aqua green hues glancing at the two over the brim of his cup. These two would surely cause more trouble then it’s worth. Gotta put them on either the do not prank or light prank list. He mused to himself. Both didn’t seem like they could take a joke. Then again lately not many people could. Most were still shaken up about Fort. Everyone seemed to be on the edge that one push could send them over the edge. Though Vaako has felt the grief, he refused to allow himself to wallow in what had happened. One could only move forward.

After his second swing Vaako placed his drink on the table inches away from his hip. He crossed his arms over his chest. Eyes stayed on Piper. While Kirran held an air of dislike altogether of his appearance for whatever reason be it; Piper wasn’t too happy it, but she gave off something else. When she spoke he simply shrugged his broad shoulders.

”Just looking for an ear to chat. New here so might as well get to know some of the locals.”

They didn’t know him. Didn’t know his past and clearly didn’t know his intentions. Vaako spent the majority of the day gathering intel on other candidates and rider. Learning whose buttons he could push with a prank or two before they snapped. Figuring which would cause another physical conflict like the prior candidates at High Reaches have done. He had already made mental notes of the two before him.

”Plus it seems like you had a lot on your mind. Never a good thing to allow thoughts to linger longer then necessary”

Clever little git, aren't you, Kirran mused, an ear on Piper's snarly comment even as he leaned his head back against the wall, eyes closing as his fingers still gently kneaded along the delicate muscles of his fire lizard's shoulders and neck. The gesture was as much to shut out both gut reaction to Piper's tartness and Vaako's (rather unnecessary, though too immature in Kirran's mind to deign it with a sharp retort off the cuff) dismissive rudeness and to re calibrate as it was an act of repose; it allowed the rangy male to take a step back mentally over the last several seconds as much as he'd been doing the last few days. It was like attracting like, if unintentionally -- dragons from the same shell, and he was almost impressed at Vaako's ability to pick up on his casual hostility (whether Kirran thought it was justified or not, as actual concern had been part of his motivation for coming to Piper in the first place). It was a dubious talent, but not one many did pull off.

Though in turn, he had to stifle a huff of amusement. What was missed was easily and fairly missed (here and there and just wanting to chat...you mean spying like brats, kid; we've all been there[/i]), but Kirran had spent far too many Turns with those closest to him -- those who should have been trustworthy and beloved -- manipulating him for him to ever be easy about...well, anyone interacting like the runt in front of him, really. Far too many protecting other loved ones like his little brother in kind, from the very same. Including the one who should have loved him the most, a thought that still caused him an enormous amount of discomfort and a fleeting thought of his new and most unusual of companions in Cayliss-- a thought he'd take his brain up on for bringing her up at all later on.

He'd let it go for now, regardless. Honey for the bugs now, manure later. Or something. Whatever. It was too much, being philosophical, when most of his brain power was directed at ignoring the smell of drink and letting his fire lizard know, mentally and through his hands, how dear she was to him. Down to the missing tip of her right front, index talon.

After all, it wasn't like either of them were responsible for the addictive aspect to his personality, and the almost physical pain not touching a drop of alcohol engendered. He wasn't that much of a jack-ass.

Thus, he didn't bother to stifle the appreciative chuckle that bubbled in his throat at Vaako's cheerful bit of philosophy (humble, indeed), letting his shoulders relax for the moment and his chin tip in acknowledgement of the hit. As for Piper, she was offered a weary shrug, if a light tone.

"Well I planned on being a pest, but I'll behave if you stop giving my baby girl here the stink-eye."

Said baby girl chuffed in response to that, though whatever distress Piper's dismissive attitude might have caused the fire lizard was eclipsed by the intense curiousity with which Lissy, currently latched on to Kirran's mind as she was mentally, was viewing Vaako over her shoulder. After a moment, the green looked away, before testing the waters with a tactic she'd learned from hanging about the Creche on occasion (if with a draconic take on it) and found quite entertaining herself; she arched her neck until she was viewing the lad upside down, before slowly crossing her jewelled eyes over her nose at him.

Just looking for an ear to chat. Piper snorted but her dissent was without any real vigor. She tended to be sociable herself, and meeting new people was not something she was generally averse to. Especially fellow candidates. Knowing who else she was Candidate with was generally a good idea; she liked to know names, at least, and where they roomed in the barracks, as well as who to watch out for in Lessons and Chores and such.

Plus it seemed like you had a lot on your mind.

That was close to the crux of it, but Piper didn't really want to talk about it. Not if she could help it. Luckily she could blame it all on Fort if it came down to it, and hide her own private misery away from prying eyes.

She cast Kirran a squint instead of the firelizard. "A pest?" If that was what he was going for, then he (and Vaako for that matter) were succeeding. There was some small consolation that it was a distraction, which the alcohol hadn't been-- it had just blurred things a bit, as it tended to do. She couldn't seem to make up her mind-- some part of her wanted to be alone with her misery and thoughts; another part preferred the distraction, and that had (in a way) been her original aim with the brandy.

"Well, it's working."

Vaako has grown up in the crčches like most of the kids if not all the kids he knew. Spending those Turns among others had thought him a thing or two. Has thought him to read people. Simple observe others silently and know who he could relate too and even know who he could joke around with. Kirran was not someone he would put on those list and as for Piper he wasn’t entirely sure just yet. He would need to probe a little longer.

Her remark could’ve been directed towards just Kirran, but the possibility it was directed to them both was highly likely. Vaako just had that special talent that got under everyone’s skin. It easily could be due to the fact he didn’t take anything too seriously, not even his candidacy. Unlike most children who dreamed about riding dragon back, Vaako only agreed to it to stay with his makeshift family and nothing more. If he didn’t Impress that was fine with him in the long run as long as he stayed close to them that’s all that mattered to the young man.

”Some of us are just natural pest.” He shrugged his shoulder nonchalantly more referring to himself then the older candidate. He had no problem with what others thought of him. To him their opinion truly didn’t matter and more often then not most of them had a stick so far up their.....simply they needed to relax and have some fun. ”Names Vaako by the way.” he grinned at the two so wide it reached his aqua green hues. Everything about his smile said he was a trouble maker. He hadn’t bothered to extend a hand out to them, but simply introduced himself. Many may have caught wind of his name and rumors as to what had occurred at High Reaches.

sorry for the short crappy reply, my mind went blanket.
