Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

"Stay."

The green fire lizard paused at the stern voice in her attempts, once again, to leave her human's sights...to explore, get her nose stuck where it shouldn't be, try to help (him or others, neither of which was often particularly useful of her), whatever it was that had her shuffling forward, ever so sneakily (or so she thought) off the ledge she'd been placed on not an hour ago. Then sighed when Kirran's warning glare didn't waver, whining under her breath petulantly as she circled once, then twice, before lying down once more.

Despite the reprimand and the back-talk it had received, Kirran couldn't help grinning as he turned his attention back to the task at hand. Moody, distractable little twit, but he loved her anyway, and could count on more than one occasion when Lissy had done something for him, even if it was just an affectionate swipe against his cheek, that had made him feel inordinately better about himself. She always meant well, really, but as was the way with most firelizards, her attention span had a limit and requests, comments and commands had to be repeated often, and then repeated in such a way that it didn't a) bewilder the little critter or b) offend the same little critter.

Thankfully for him, Option B was a little more difficult to do with her than it was with most females he'd come across.

Unfortunately for her, he knew her well enough to know that she'd likely end up creating more work for him at present than aiding, and while Kirran was perfectly find carrying out chores that had practically become rote over the Turns, he didn't fancy adding to the job by hunting out whatever item Lissy had misplaced in her attempts to help him re-stack the Infirmary's hard supply store. Especially not when it was almost done for the moment, because while he didn't mind the work, he did mind the crick in his neck being in the confined space was starting to give him.

"There, all done," he murmured after another half candle mark had passed, and Lissy, her sulks forgotten, hummed happily in response to the satisfaction radiating off of the tall Candidate. An idle click of his fingers had the little green wiggling her back end happily before dropping from the nook she'd been ensconced in...though to Kirran's amused chagrin, she ignored his shoulder entirely for the box of detritus collected during his clean instead, plopping herself into it cheerfully as he lifted it to bring it and them out of the store room and back into the main rooms of the Infirmary.

"Well, you are trash when you're proddy, so go figure," Kirran drawled, stifling a snort when he merely earned another satisfied trill, before placing the box on a clear bench for a moment. That done, he glanced around briefly, before arching his sore back and swivelling it from side to side until there was a satisfying pop.

Ouch, that had hurt. Porictir had, in the middle of dashing out of a room, managed to catch his arm on a stray nail and slice it open. He'd come to the infirmary in search of someone to give it a clean and it had been duly cleaned up, with much tutting and eye rolling about his lack of spatial awareness. It didn't need a stitch, he'd been told, but they'd redwort it and numbweed it and bandage it. In the cleaning process a splinter had been removed and it had brought even Porictir's eyes to watering, compounded by the pricking of claws from an agitated craterlizard. Spook had been unimpressed at the complaints of her bonded and had spent what time she wasn't digging her claws into him hissing loudly at the person damaging him, from the back of the pouch he'd made for her for when she was sitting on his neck.

Given the all clear he'd thanked the healer on duty who had gone back to perusing some hides, and then stood up to leave, whereupon he nearly walked smack dab into someone, in his haste to avoid smashing into someone else, he pulled back a little too fast, dislodging Spook from his neck pouch and sending her fluttering into the air, chittering her displeasure loudly as he sorted it back out for her. He held back a grin, normally she was quiet but with her sudden entrance to public view, and not of her chosen, she became quite vociferous. He supposed he'd do the same if his appearance cause people to point and whisper. Pouch sorted, she flitted back into it, turning around to stare balefully at the person in front of them.

"Now Spook, one mustn't stare, it was my fault after all, and I'm sure this fine gentleman wouldn't dream of poking fun at you!" He took a better look at the person he'd nearly mashed. Ah, a fellow candidate, and he had a passenger in his box of bits.

"I'm sorry if I startled you, I do have the most dreadful habit of walking before I look" His shamefaced apology was accompanied by a small bow, sending Spook into another fit of chittering before she latched her tail round his neck and dug her tiny claws back into him. "I'm Porictir, I've seen you around bu not had the chance to greet you, we ARE rather busy aren't we!" He winced as Spook settled herself, tightening the grip on his throat. "This delightful creature" he pointed with a thumb at the agitated craterlizard, "is Spook, you'll have to excuse her manners, she IS rather small and she does gain a dreadful amount of attention, which I am trying to explain to her is a good thing..." he tailed off then, with an exasperated shrug.

"It's a pleasure to meet you..." he raised an eyebrow enquiringly at the other candidate for his name, "and the little green beauty you have in your box!"

Fine...gentleman...?

Sore back notwithstanding, the size of him did him one good thing, and that was the difficulty it usually took to dislodge him from where he'd planted his feet on the ground unless one was making a concerted attempt to do so. Mind, it didn't stop Kirran's initial gut reaction to reach out and grab for the person, though he paused, if belatedly, when Porictir not only righted himself, but did so with a stream of chatter.

Blink.

At first, Kirran rather thought the fellow was nervous. More habit than anything else to think so, when you were close to someone -- in his case, a sibling -- with some pretty severe anxiety. But once the rest of his mind had caught up both to the situation and the sudden onslaught (compared to the quiet the store rooms had been), it was clear that was not the case, and Kirran's eyes hooded with something that might have been sardonic amusement, perhaps a touch of curiousity, even as he shifted the crate of rubbish so that he could take the proffered hand.

"Kirran, and right. I think I've heard that name yelled out once or twice." The box was readjusted to sit securely in both hands again once the initial polite gesture was put aside, Kirran glancing at Spook for a moment before sparing the obviously unsettled creature from partaking too much more in any form of interaction. Instead, he jerked his chin at Porictir's recently dressed injury in inquiry, before beginning to take this and that from the shelf above the counter.

"And you'll end up having her," he added dryly, indicating the green firelizard now pushing things about the box in some attempt to sort the debris (though to her credit, she hadn't made so much as a peep when the drama with the crater lizard had started), "If you keep complimenting her like that."

Porictir returned the shake with slightly less vigour than he'd normally have used, he didn't wish to dislodge Spook again, and she could use the respite, he thought. He couldn't help but grin in response to the fellow candidate's response.

"Ahhh yes, Kirran, I'll remember it now, I've been dreadfully busy and I'm afraid I've plain not worked out many of the names I should have." Genuine regret coloured his tone. Maybe THIS time round he'd get to speaking terms with at least one or two people. He noticed the attention to his wound and lifted his arm to display the dressing, gazing woefully at it.

"I'm rather afraid that a great many of the times you'll have heard my name called, it is because I've damaged myself in one way or another." He rolled his eyes in mock dismay. "Today, I was bitten by a nail in a door frame as I brushed too close to it." He lowered his voice a touch. "At least it didn't get my tunic, I've had to repair enough items of clothing this month already."

Spook, reassured by the lack of attention displayed, had edged herself forwards and was now sniffing in the general direction of Kirran, Porictir noticed and his tone, and face, softened, the grandiose posturing melting away, leaving him seemingly an entirely different person, as he gently stretched up his hand to stroke the shortened snout, grinning happily at Kirran as she leaned into the pressure.

"Ah now see, she's come out to see what's going on, she'll learn one day that not everyone is a threat."

He smiled at the implied threat of firelizard gaining, maybe one day... "I don' think she'd get on with me in one of my full on days." He looked down for a second. "I can be horribly pretentious but it does distract from the fact that I'm as graceful as half a herdbeast..."

He watched the little green, musing to himself as he noted her busy sorting of the contents. "Maybe another, less flighty, friend would help settle Spook here." Now that she wasn't in full on panic mode, the obsidian was looking around herself, and chirruped a query to the green. "I think I might be onto something..."

The guy was either arrogantly over-confident, putting on a front for whatever reasons he had, or somewhere in between, and Kirran couldn't help the crinkle in the corner of his eyes or the manner in which his head cocked, just so, in a sort of mild curiousity at the mannerisms of this new acquaintance of his. It was better than laughing his arse off, either way, and he was terribly and uncharacteristically close to doing just that while listening to the fellow-- Porictir, talk.

Observation proved once again an invaluable ally though, and though he himself was slightly startled by the blunt-nosed little creature -- Spook, was it? -- moving in his periphery, experience with Lissy and the occasional other little critter (especially in a place with hot items, like a forge) kept the tall man from so much as glancing at Spook out of the corner of his eye-- Turns of what he'd heard and been told impressed upon his mind by Beastcrafter parents until it was practically instinct when in the presence of a fretful beast, even if Spook certainly wasn't the size of a runner or the disposition of a wherry...he hoped, anyway. Nonetheless, he paid her little attention directly, instead keeping his gaze upon her human...deducing and deciding, ultimately, that his fellow Candidate's behaviour was a front...to some extent, at least.

Easier to believe that, than it actually being arrogance. Kirran despised the behaviour with a passion, even if it meant admitting, reluctantly, that it was in part to do with the fact that it was occasionally like looking into a blurry mirror -- all those times before maturity and the occasional disappointment had made their mark on his own levels supreme of self-confidence.

Most days, anyway, he thought wryly, the emotion manifesting in a crooked grin and a quirked eyebrow.

"Bit you, huh? Well, I was already wary of door ways, but if they're turning sentient, that's beyond terrifying. She's fine, by the way." He indicated Lissy, and by extension Spook, the former of who had noted the attention of her odd little audience and was now cheerfully lifting a shiny sliver of...something for Spook to look at, and Kirran looked at it closely to ensure it wasn't going to cut her mouth or poison her before continuing, "Greens are...I don't know...impulsive, quick, a little daft, gregarious, sure...but they've got hearts of gold. She's already trying to be gentler for Spook's benefit."

So his fellow had stopped to talk with him, and even actively seemed to listen. Porictir was rather pleased by this, he had so little interactions with people that weren't full of his nervously trying to fill gaps in conversation or being tended by healers, that he was still not sure exactly how he should communicate with his fellows. he knew, deep down, that he had to rein in his clumsiness AND attitude, but it was so hard t obreak out of the role which he had found himself slipping into over tue Turns. Ever the fool, the cheerful front... He grinned happily as Kirran responded to his door comment. At last some humour thrown his way! He nodded, solemnly. "Oh yes, they should indeed be watched for, some of them can be quite vicious." He rolled back his sleeve to ruefully show off his collection of scars. "And every last one of them seems to want at least a taste of me."

He looked in the direction of the green and Spook, as if that was some form of approval, shook herself and flittered down to the table to land in front of the larger firelizard, chirping inquisitively at the shiny thing the green was now offering her. Having decided that Kirran was no threat and neither was the green, she reached up with her forepaws to rest them on the box, getting as close as possible to her new friend so she could look better at what she was holding.

"She does seem to be soothing Spook." He smiled gently down at the scene before them. "I'm pleased that she feels there's no threat here. between MY theatrics and HER histrionics, my life has hardly been quiet enough to hear myself think." He looked about himself, realising that there were other candidates about, working. "Oh shells" he had the good grace to look abashed. "I'm not disturbing you badly am I?"

"Not bad."

It wasn't his initial, more idle response, but repeated exposure to a sibling riddled with who knew what kind of anxiety issues that he actually gave a real bag of dimglows about and then another sibling again who was something akin to an atypical psychopath had learned in Kirran the understanding that, for the moment at least, it was smarter to not antagonise a person before it had gone much beyond a first impression. Regardless of what that first impression was.

Mind, said first impression also gave Kirran rather the -- cough -- impression that he'd be kicking a canine puppy if he did become dismissive or lazy about it any time soon, and Kirran did in fact like canine puppies.

Thus, the remark was followed up with a pointed, even mildly sheepish shrug; the movement serving well to catch the shiny, deceptively hard-looking skin that was a burn mark and an old scar or three on the portion of his arms not covered by his short-sleeved tunic-- marks of his craft as much as the slightly ruddy tinge to his cheeks under his beard, souveneir of their regular exposure to steam and heat. Firelizards of the same fair, or clutch, or however it went -- a possibility which seemed to already excite Porictir some, so who was he to dispel the guy's good humour un-neccessarily?

"She's pretty good, yeah. Just needs a lot of patience...I prefer her to a pretty gold any day, but don't tell anyone that. I like a quiet life." Kirran tilted his head at the two little critters, weary (but sincere) good humour passing over his gaze as Lissy diligently continued to sort what would ultimately be rubbish thrown out, now chirping to Spook as she did so...as if explaining what she was doing with the items. The previously offered sliver of what Kirran had now deduced was some kind of looking glass remnant still rested in front of Spook, though-- his firelizard apparently generous enough to let the little-- what was it--she? Crater lizard? Whatever the new ones were called-- but giving her the option of keeping what had been shown to her in the first place instead of discarding it with the rest of the piles.

Kirran was distracted enough by their antics (and the colour of the Obsidian of Spook's hide) that he took a moment to catch up to being spoken to again. A slightly bemused blink was given to Porictir before a shrug and a crooked grin somewhere between wry, impish and amused followed.

Porictir grinned at the response. "It's definitely one of the better ones I've gained from an inanimate object. People always tell me that I need to be more careful, I try but it just seems something is against me!"

The shrug that Kirran gave showed off a good portion of scarring and he raised his eyebrow. "We could be twins nearly. You'd never believe I was Weavercraft before I came home would you..." He glanced sideways at the nearest healer and dropped his voice. "I'm pretty sure a lot of the healers here wish I was still Weavercraft." He laughed then, he couldn't imagine not being here.

"Oh I'm learning patience with Spook, and she's meant to be of a 'steadier' temperament than some other colours. Maybe one day we'll find another friend eh Spook!" He followed the glance of Kirran to the lizards, Spook was peering at herself in the scrap or mirror now, whilst Lissy dug about in the box. The little obsidian reared up on her hind legs as Lissy chirped, peering into the box and cheeping as she did so, so many pretty things.

He gave a dramatised sigh of relief at Kirran's mention of multitasking. "Oh good, I seem to be in everyone's way, I'm pretty sure I should change my name to GoawayPorictir!" He gave a lopsided shrug, matching the half sided smile. Self deprecating humour was his speciality. "I could always help out, if that'd help, although whatever you're doing with the box, Lissy and now Spook seem absorbed in it!"

"If you plan on Impressing, I wouldn't. I'll call you G'way though, if you like."

It was said dryly, if with a trace of cynicism that was almost bitter-- the taste of it in his tone gone as quickly as it had appeared, though, if it had been present in his expression at all. The smile didn't quite reach Kirran's eyes however as he shook his head in response to the lad's eagerness. Considering the sheer number of Candidate Masters this place had, it wouldn't surprise him if one of them was pedantic (ridiculous, in his mind) over the idea of Candidates helping out other Candidates with chores. No need to bring that kind of harassment into their lives, no matter how well-meaning Porictir seemed to be...blithering and all.

On the other hand...

"That's trash to go out... he jerked his head at where the fire lizards were playing, Lissy now attempting to cajole Spook into the box and closer to her with a fluting noise and fluttering, waggling wings. The little green clearly wanted to play now that the Crater lizard didn't seem as likely to bite, and her nose nudged at a stray bit of twine that between the two of them, would be rotten fun to tug.

"But if you're that bored, it's just dusting the shelves in the store room now. Do the lower ones for me, and I'll give you a hand with whatever you're down on the list for next time."

Sigh. Even if it was extra, likely unnecessary work.

"Hah! G'way! I like that, maybe I'll convince my future dragon to use that one!"

Porictir chuckled glancing at Kirran, he appreciated humour even directed at himself, and he sensed no malice, just dry amusement. Maybe he'd get on with this candidate. Even Spook seemed to be enjoying herself.

The little obsidian was allowing herself to be cajoled, infected with excitement even, and he smiled fondly to see it, she was so cautious usually. Carefully, Spook dropped her bit of mirror to the top, doubtless she'd remember to pick it up and take it home to add to her nest, then she dropped to her front legs in a swift bow and, with a chirp and a wriggle, half jumped, half clambered into the box where she stopped. Eyes whirling uncertainly she looked up at Porictir and he waved a hand at her. "Go on, Lissy won't bite, will you!" With that Spook relaxed and picked up the piece of twine, shaking her head with a squeaky growl and dangling the other end for Lissy to grab.

"One man's trash is another lizard's treasure, eh!" Porictir grinned at the antics of the two. "It almost seems a shame to disturb them doesn't it. Perhaps" and he nodded towards the store room, "the shelves first!" He grabbed a dusting cloth and started towards the room.

"And" he added with a cheerful grin. "No need to help out later. They" and he jerked his head in the direction of the candidate barracks with a wry roll of the eyes, "would be happy to know I'm doing SOMETHING. Can't clean latrines with an open wound!"
