Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Karnial had been cleared for light duty, even though Bremorth was still grounded. It had been a few days since the hatching and with Bremorth moping around on the ground; Karnial decided to see if she could be made useful. She asked around and was given a task. She was kind of glad that the chore would put her on the hatching sands, which was out of the dreary weather outside.

What are you so happy about? Bremorth asked, watching Karnial shift into good shoes. Her wings were bandaged into a closed position, against her body. She had been going crazy with boredom, driving Karnial insane.

“I’m leading the candidates in cleaning the hatching sands” she said, making sure she had her feet firmly in her shoes with a stomp. She walked over to Bremorth and scratched her eye ridge lovingly. “Can you let the candidates know to report to the hatching sands for a lesson?” She asked, moving towards the exit of their ground weyr.

As Karnial headed to the exit Bremorth stood and said I shall come with you as far as the entrance. I think sitting our side in what little light there is would be nice She stretched as best as she could before following out into the weyr bowl. Candidates! Please join me and mine in the hatching cavern please! she said, broadcasting to all of the candidates. She headed to the hatching sands, in a careful walk.

Karnial smiled and said, “If you want to come you are welcome too” she urged her grey on while she made a small detour to grab some bags to put the egg pieces in so that they would be easier to dispose of. Once she had the bags she made her way to the entrance of the hatching cavern, where Bremorth lay with her head and neck stretched out near the side of the entrance. “Let me know if you head back to our weyr, it’s not going to be a very interesting day” she said, adjusting the bags in her arms. She walked into the hatching cavern and dropped the bags in a pile not far from where the candidates should enter.

Let me know if I need to sit on any of them, if any cause you trouble she joked, knowing she wasn’t getting into the hatching sands without her wings. She also wouldn’t hurt anyone on purpose, hurting Karnial had been more than enough for her.

Karnial dusted her hands off, before gently stretching her back. She had to be careful, her ribs were still healing but she was encouraged to move. Now for the candidates to arrive.

It was odd that their first steps onto the sands was after a hatching they could have stood for. Though as every hatchling found and impressed of their former peers, Keer was satisfied with their choice to watch from the stands. They had reveled in just being a witness. There were no regrets, most of all since they'd not been suspended again for doing so when their absence had been noted by Kari.

It was a bit different, not having a candidate master call them in, but then again it was a bit more preferential. It meant that while there was going to be reports back for ill behavior and attitudes, that they didn't feel like they'd be watched with nearly as much scrutiny if it had been one of the greenriders. The constant trying to keep up their best appearances to prove they were on the right footing to be considered a candidate, despite whatever others may have thought, was a bit tiring.

Keer had nodded to the dragon politely in passing, curiously looking at her bound wing without leering. They could only imagine how infuriating it must be to have such a restraint. Lessons, coupled with Infirmary chore, had both explained that while harder to break, dragon bones healed a whole lot slower. A process in which, for people, took far to long in Keer's own experience.

Taking up one of the bags obviously intended for them, Keer swung the sack about their shoulders as if it were a towel. Holding each end as they looked over the Greyrider before them. Trying to judge her temperament from her appearance alone before busying themself with the sands underfoot. Wiggled their boots into the sad, the warmth radiating through the leather, watching the toes disappear into the fine terrain.

Smiling in a relaxed manner as their fellow candidates joined them, awaiting instructions. Far more jovial looking than most at the likey sore recollection of being left standing pushed upon them once more.

Insult to injury, they'd been called to the hatching grounds for a lesson. Porictir dressed, glumly, and started his walk across the bowl. What if, he wondered, he'd have Impressed. What kind of dragon would find him a suitable partner? To one side he glimpsed a sight of the Weyrling class, and tried to pick out Minoh, ah there. He smiled. Even if he hadn't, he was glad she'd Impressed. She deserved it. What if he didn't? The smile faded and he chewed at the inside of his cheek, an old habit he'd not done for some time now. He straightened up, the slouch was hurting his back. There was no point, none at all, in beating himself up about this. Either he'd Impress, or he wouldn't, and he'd go on to further his career as a weaver. He, and a few other candidates were approaching the grounds now and he set his shoulders firm, gave a friendly greeting to the grey outside, her poor wings bandaged to her sides, and he grimaced, he hoped she'd be better soon.

He entered the grounds and joined his fellows, smiling and greeting them with a cheery "Good morning!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marlach had woken early, sure he'd not long been in the grounds, but he was excited to go back. They were called in for a lesson, and he was sure it would be cleaning up eggshells which, while not his wished for post hatching placement, was just another signalling that, at some point in the future, there'd be another hatching. He threw on his clothes, even he would not brave the grounds without some heat protection, and wandered off across the bowl to watch the comings and goings of the Weyr. He watched the dragons flying about their business until Bremorth called them in and then he headed, eagerly, to the hatching grounds, waving to Bremorth as he walked to the entrance. "I hope your wings are feeling better today Bremoth! Thank you for calling us."
He entered the grounds and stood smartly to attention in front of Karnial, ready for orders.
Dailar had not been in the candidate barracks for very long, having decided to give impressing a chance. He still wasn’t confident about being a candidate, but if his brother could do it then so could he. It didn’t hurt either that it wasn’t as crowded in the candidate barracks compared to the rest of the Weyr.
Each morning he would get up two candlemarks before morning alarm, jog to the stables, take care of Snow Burst. Sometimes he would get a quick ride in to keep her from stiffening up, groom her, feed, clean her stall, make sure she had water for the day; before running back to the candidate barracks, get bathed quickly and be on time to catch a quick bite to eat before daily exercise. The early mornings were not much of a problem to him, being used to getting up early to care for animals before they moved the caravan when his family was alive.
He hadn’t made any friends, but he hadn’t tried to attract people to make friends. He flinched as a dragon’s voice pushed into his mind, telling him and the other candidates to head to the hatching cavern. He exhaled the tension out of his muscles at the end of the report. He was not use to dragon’s touching his mind. He called to his firelizard’s, heading to the hatching cavern.
Scout and Zurina emerged from between over his head, dipping and diving with excitement. They were in high spirits even though the weather wasn’t nice.
As Dailar got close to the entrance to the hatching cavern he saw a grey dragon lounging with her wings bandaged to her sides. He hadn’t seen many injured dragons yet and see this one here was a little odd to him. He schooled his expression and said, “Good morning!” as he walked by her to the sands. He felt the heat threw his boots, and shifted a little to keep from letting his feet over heat. He stood at attention waiting for instructions.
Zurina and Scout dove down to run across the sands, chasing each other, tumbling and wrestling in play.
Bremorth gave a happy croon of greeting to each candidate as they arrived; glad to see respectful, on time candidates. To Marlach she said, Thank you they are! Though they are starting to itch! She watched the candidate that called good morning to her, walk into the sands followed by his two firelizards who were in the act of playing. She sighed, wishing she could fly and play.
Karnial watched as the candidates arrived, hearing Bremorth greet them before seeing them. She smiled and nodded to each in greeting, waiting for the last of the stragglers to fall in to line. Once they were there she straightened to her full height and said “Good morning and thank you for coming! My name is Karnial and I will be leading you all in cleaning the sands of any egg shells so that when the time comes more eggs will follow!” She expected that some, if not all of them, were not happy about being here having to clean up the proof that they didn’t impress.
“I know this seems like an awful thing to have you do, but keep in mind that there are few candidates who age out of candidacy! Just because you didn’t impress at the last hatching or even if you don’t impress the next, does not mean you will not impress. The best way I can say it in my dragon’s words would be you may have to wait for your dragon to find you, but your dragon will have to wait to hatch to impress to you!” She wanted to try to give them encouragement because she remembered what it was like waiting for Bremorth to hatch for her.
She rubbed her hands together and said “Ok, so this isn’t going to be an extreme kind of lesson today, talking is more than okay. If you want to ask me any questions I will do the best I can to answer them. But other than that, grab yourselves a bag and let’s get to work!” she waited for them to move into action before moving to walk to sands were the eggs had been. She toed one of the shells with a reminiscing smile on her face as she thought about that fateful day that she impressed her grey.
With the group gathered, and the instructions being doled out, Keer managed to pull their attention from the sand underfoot to their peers. Their lowered numbers fresh out of the hatching was staggering. It was strange how sparse things felt so suddenly. Their previously bloating numbers growing with the length of time Keer had been around, only to suddenly drop after one night. The lesson gave them a better perspective of this than chores or the quietness of the barracks.
Karnial, as she had introduced herself, had encouraged them to chatter, having made specific mention of it. Keer was going to take full advantage of that with the lack of sharply gazing candidate masters around to judge their behavior. Stretching again, they looked around at those closest to them, trying to figure out who was going to help them stave off the silence in this task. Dailar was the unfortunate nearby that caught Keer's attention.
Rough material dragged across their neck as they whipped their already obtained sack off of their shoulders. Taking a moment to secure two parts of the opening to their belt, keeping it both close but out of hand.
Wry grin across their face they approached the similarly tall young man, wrapping an arm around his neck. A rather friendly manner for being someone the other candidate only knew in the short time he had been around. Keer was free to be more social once again now that suspension was behind them. The gesture wasn't meant to do more than startle him, with little pressure and plenty of room to be shrugged off or walked away from.
"Dailar right? Mind if I join you?" Then answering the question on their own without so much as a beat missed. "Excellent!"
"I must admit, you good sir have got me curious. You're always out early in the mornings. You sneaking out to meet with a lovely lady? or man, no judgment here." Keer offered a wink to pair with their obnoxiously toothy smile. They had observed, in their own right, the odd hours kept by the other candidate while maintaining their own additional morning routine.
As always they'd question but not pry into such matters. That would potentially result in others questioning them, and while able to shrug things off easily and change subjects, it was easier when things didn't get brought up in the first place.
Dailar listened to Karnial speak, he hadn’t stood for the last hatching. Instead opting to watch from the stands. He had never seen a Dragon hatching before and was glad he had. It was interesting to watch the faces of those who impressed. He went to grab a bag when Karnial sent them off on their task. He really wasn’t paying attention to anyone else, his mind wondering.
He wasn’t aware of Keer following him, and when the other candidate wrapped his arm around his neck, he stiffened, and his hands clenched. He forced himself to keep his hands by his sides, knowing that it wasn’t meant to offend. He exhaled out his nose, letting the tension leave his muscles. He looked at Keer with raised brow. He was awfully pushy.
He grinned to show no ill feeling though the feelings didn’t reach his eyes. “You could say that…” He chuckled darkly, “I go to see my Lovely Runner Mare in the stables in the morning… You know give her yummy food, and bathe her, and sometimes I even ride her!” his tone was sarcastically dark and jokingly hinted at sexual. He couldn’t stop the louder chuckle this time, moving away from the other man to kneel at a pile of egg shells.
Zurina stopped in the sands when she felt the unease and shock from her pet. Scout took a few more strides before he stopped to see why Zurina wasn’t chasing him. Zurina forgot the game and took off to land on Dailar’s shoulder to keep Keer away from hers. She hissed at him, wrapping her tail around his neck. Scout walked over to them, looking at Keer while sitting back on his haunches. He wasn’t sure Keer was a threat to his, but he was going to check him out.
Dailar rolled his eyes at Zurina, though he didn’t brush her off. He pointed at her nose saying “No”, signally her to knock off her antics. He would not let her be rude or threatening.
Keer laughed at the candidate's attempt at sultry innuendo.
"I knew it, how sly. Off enjoying yourself with your lady friend while the rest of us are asleep." Grinning wryly as they followed the other man to a small cluster of shell nearby.
"You'll have to introduce me at some point."
Taking a moment as they touched shell for the first time. Fascinated by the texture. They shook it a little, brushing off some of the sand clinging to the shard, before placing it into their sack and reaching for the next piece. Next time they'd get to see the real deal up close and personal, or at least so they hoped.
Hearing the sudden hiss from Dailar's direction they glanced over and smiled.
"Guess I can't win over all the ladies huh? Sorry for upsetting you." They addressed the green before the blue caught their eye.
"Now I wish I had some sort of appeasing offering on me. You got quite the ensemble, any more hiding nearby?"
They asked, offering out a hand cautiously to the curious blue.
Easy for her to say. She's already Impressed.
Kirran had become quite adept at dodging alcohol when it was within his vicinity, and especially when it was within a tempting situation. Not to mention, mind, that alcohol wasn't allowed among the Candidates...even the oldtimers like himself. The last part was irrelevant, though, because if he'd really wanted to get it, he'd have found it one way or another.
It was only the thought of embarrassing his little brother that had kept it from being so, this Hatching gone.
But the temptation was real in the wake of yet another depressing, resounding rejection from the same beasts who'd rejected him, and while he managed a half smile to Porictir's cheerful greeting, it was strained, the young man just weary enough, stung enough still, that his usual poker face failed him for a long moment, jaw twitching, upon comprehending why, exactly, he'd had Bremorth first in his head, and then...this.
It stung. Like sand and vinegar and salt literally going into a wound as he surveyed the shell-littered Sands, and Kirran wished once again, valiantly, that he was more of a callous ass than he actually was. Or just more dramatic outright. Because he might have been able to turn on his heel and storm out then, the ball and chain of seven failed Hatchings dragging behind him. In the least, he might have thrown up his hands and gone for the drink he now craved twice over, with what was put before him as far as chores went.
He wasn't the only one. He knew that. He also knew his thoughts were tending towards uncharitable, or beyond it, so far as Karnial was concerned.
But they weren't entirely unfair, either.
In the end, it was Lissy that took the initiative; the little green distracting her usually blithe master from his stunned incredulity with her slight weight appearing on his shoulder and her nose nuzzling the shaggy hair at his cheek. She then cooed softly, but peremptorily, and Kirran couldn't resist the small, crooked smile curling his lips as she slid off his arm and on to the Sands, lifting an egg shell almost too large for her and offering it up to him ever so helpfully.
note: Kirran is open to being bothered by anyone.
It was odd how easily it became acceptable that strange voices would be making announcements in her head on a regular occurrence. Do this, do that, arrive here or arrive there. At times it was rather frustrating because it made her feel that the one space she had had to herself for so long was no longer hers, but that was not the case. At least not yet. She pulled on her boots and pulled the laces tight before making her way to the hatching cavern. It certainly hadn't been long since the last hatching. Did it bother her that she had not impressed? Not as much as it probably did the other candidates. It was more bothersome to listen to their belly aching and moaning about how less deserving people got dragons when they didn't. It was enough to cause her to grind her teeth and fight each urge to snap at those who whined about how they didn't get something simply for showing up and existing.
Her arrival was brief, she gave a nod to both dragon and rider. Respectful, but never overly talkative. She settled into the edges of the group and folded her arms across her chest as she waited for further instructions. She let out a soft snort at what she felt was the coddling that the rider did for the group. Either get over not impressing or go somewhere else in her opinion. Kyla knew that she had about a turn left before she was no longer eligible. Would she go home defeated and sob on her bed until no sound came out? Faranth no, she would stay and continue to work at the weyr.
With a shrug, Kyla gathered up her bag and moved to begin getting the pieces of egg out. Her eyes wandered to the firelizards moving about. She wasn't a pet person so she didn't quite understand the draw to the lizards, but it was interesting to watch them move about. She turned back to her work quickly. The heat was uncomfortable, but nothing to complain about.
TAG Keer
Dailar let out a chuckle, Keer wasn’t wrong, if a bit off in his first guess at it being a woman. ”Id be happy to introduce you to her! She’s an expensive lass but she’s a sweetheart” He said, picking up shells from a pile in the sands. He had watched these eggs hatch from the stands, he wondered if he would impress at all. He glanced up at Keer as he spoke to Zurina. ”Don’t mind her much, she’s possessive of me. Scout there though is friendly to a fault” He reached into his belt pouch and pulled out a strip of dried meat, ripped it in half and fed half to Zurina and offered the other half to Keer saying, ”Here offer this to him! You will become his best friend” He chuckled again and said ”No that’s everyone!”
Scout stretched out a paw to Keer’s hand, crooning a hello. His brown wings shifted on his back as he saw the meat treat that Dailar was breaking apart. He chirped excitedly, watching were the meat was headed, towards Keer. He waited patiently, his gaze unwavering.
