This poem is a response or sequel to the poem "An Era's Last Echo". ---- As the sea envelopes every inch Of my ragged and torn form Violently tugging at my limp limbs A strange burning sensation begins To prickle at my frigid feet Disturbing my peaceful dying sleep I am suddenly jolted awake By my saturated lungs Who scream to breathe in my ear Pleading desperately for sustenance Reaching toward the shimmering surface I am too weak to resist The grasp of the angry, churning sea Whose forceful current pulls me Toward the darkness far beneath Yet echoing faintly inside my head I hear an enlivening call And suddenly my hypothermic body Begins to tingle with warmth As the spell of death is lifted Feeling as if my whole body Has woken from a paralyzing slumber I kick and flail against the ocean Desperately ascending towards the surface Barely escaping her fatal jaws The sun is framed cruelly above Tempting me with its piercing rays And as my scorched and salted lungs Propel me toward life on the other side I am mocked by its cheerful gaze The color comes rushing back Spilling into my eyes from all sides As if the sheets blocking out the light Had been ripped away As if the windows had been flung open And as I burst through the foam Of the thrashing, crushing tide Inhaling deeply the rejuvenating air For the first time since you died I have awakened from my coma |
