The Formula One legend sustained the injury while skiing in Savoie with his condition as yet uncertain.

The seven-time world champion has reportedly been transported straight to hospital where he is being treated.

According to news outlet Europe 1, Schumacher was alone as he suffered the injury in Meribel, Savoie.

The 44-year-old retired from F1 in October 2012, two years after having returned to competition.

I hear now its serious but not life threatening.

Imagine being in F1 all these years and the bad accident happens while skiing.

Better sticking to cars Michael.

Speedy recovery <thumbsup>

Seems to be conflicting reports. Sky News is currently reporting that he's in a coma, and in 'critical condition'!!

Typical for head injuries. The victim feels ok just after, but then gets headache or loose conscience up till hours later. Result of potential brain hemorrhage. Michael was running down between two prepped slopes – Chamois, a red run, and the Biche, a blue run. Appears he lost control and fell down smacking his head against the rocks there. Quite some blood on the spot, so injury must have been obvious right away. Probably also reason why the ski patrol called the helicopter in right away. Several have died this week in the local alps running off piste despite warnings of severe avalanche risks. Local rumors say he got head surgery this afternoon when arriving at the CHU Nord in Grenoble to release the pressure from the brain hemorrhage. In any case a serious intervention. Lets hope the best...

Edit: The hospital has just stated that Schumacher was brought into them with a severe brain trauma. That he had a brain hemorrhage which they treated with surgery right away. They say they will publish an update Monday morning 10am.

The hospital just hosted a press conference. No good news at all.
- Michael was already right after the accident not responding 'neurologically' normal. He was not able to respond to questions from the skiing patrol.
- He has a severe blow to the right side of his head. They said without helmet there would have been 0% chance of survival.
- They indicate the severe trauma may have been caused by a high speed crash as an 'ordinary fall' would not have caused such trauma through helmet.
- Michael is kept in hypothermic condition (34 degrees) and artificial coma to support the brain to recover best possible.
- His condition is still termed 'critical', which means life at danger.
- Doctors are not in a position to indicate how long he will be kept in coma, his chances of survival or any potential longterm effect.
- No time/date given for any follow-up to the public.

The surgeon Gerrard Saillant, who has been mentioned in the news as being a brain- and spine trauma specialist that flew from Paris to Grenoble yesterday afternoon, was sitting at the hospital conference but said he was only there as a personal friend of Schumacher's and that his local medical colleagues were 100% in charge of Michael's treatment and any comments related to this.

I would say the next 24 hours will be critical.

I really hope he pulls through and is 100% ok.

I apologise for my seemingly flippant previous post!

Well it seems as though his injury is a lot more serious than first thought. I hope and pray that he pulls through.
My stepson had a brain injury at age 29 years and I pray that Shumi's family aren't put into the position we were where the life support had to be turned off! At least he was an organ donor so hopefully he saved some lives.

I would say the fact that there's been little extra info coming out for most of the day is at least encouraging. I wouldn't expect a great deal of improvement in the next day or so and that any further news today would have been more likely to have been worse and not better. Of course, I am not a brain doctor, so I'm probably talking crap, but talking positive somehow seems to help ease the mind slightly. Let's just hope that he pulls through, and then hope that any lasting damage is not too serious, or hopefully not permanent.

Michael Schumacher has been part of my life for over 22 years... I have followed his career from his debut and have always been a his biggest fan... I was travelling Sunday so did not hear about his accident until I got into work this morning... to say I am in a state of shock is an under statement. Words fail me at present, suffice to say... get well soon
