Would anyone believe it was James Hunt if he wasn't smoking?

Hopefully people will recall the movie Apollo 13, someone always had one burning in mission control (also a Ron Howard film).

The use of the epithet 'Stalinist' in the article is perhaps a tiny bit over the top, but don't these PC prats have better things to do ...

All they had to do was end the movie with the hard drinking, hard smoking Hunt dying at the age of 45... that should balance the argument a little.

I smoked for 50 of the last 66 years. Lots of cash burnt and a couple of relationships spoilt but I still play the tenor sax in a band and since I gave up smoking on May 31st I have never felt so sh*t!

I also feel demonised by the PC brigade. Beware drinkers, anglers and anyone who runs a car over 998cc - the "Anti" brigade are after you.

<grrr>

Yes, that's right – surreally, a film is being hauled over the coals for telling us the truth about the past.
Rush, you see, shows Formula 1 racing cars plastered with advertising for cigarette brands. Which is exactly what they were like in the 1970s, of course, and right up to 2005, after which cigarette ads were banned in F1.

To not see someone smoking in the 70's would be like doing a film in 40 years time that does not show people with Ipods or mobile phones!!
The anti-smoking lobby would do better to show you the pensioners from that era that are housebound with oxygen masks because of their smoking, not deny it ever happened.

It is OK for me.

If for example guns were forbidden in the USA, western films should show gunmen with bananas instead of colts.

My mother-in-law smoked and died from lung disease.

However you have to be so careful when you instantly blame tobacco! After her Post Mortem it was found she actually died from a lung disease caused by her working for Pirelli (making bedroom slippers!) over 30 years earlier.

None of this is "black and white", there are lots of grey areas!
