A Norfolk micro brewery has been told it must change its name or face legal action, because it sounds too similar to the energy drink Red Bull.

Redwell brewery, which employs just eight people in Norwich, has been told by the firm its name could "confuse" customers and "tarnish" its trademark.

Red Bull put the frighteners on!

Maybe they want the brewery out of the way before Kimi arrives?

I just sent the following email to Red Bull f1 at: feedback@redbullf1.com

Dear Sirs:

One of the members on a motorsport forum has raised the issue of Red Bull's threat of legal action if a micro brewery in the UK did not change its name on the basis it might damage your good reputation.  This has been reported by the BBC News.  Article link as follows:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-23697138

The micro brewer is named Redwell because it is located on Redwell Street.

This action by Red Bull is most likely viewed by all as heavy handed and ridiculous.  Any action by Red Bull is likely to fail, but the real issue should be "who let this happen?"  It is so bad from a PR perspective.  To try to bully a micro brewery who named itself after its street, with logo's so completely dissimilar to yours, is offensive to everyone.

I have no interest in Redwell whatsoever.  I strongly suggest you issue a public apology to the brewery and settle with them with some compensation.

Absolutely disgusting behavior.

Good work U4. Good article.

This is going to be a major back lash for Red Bull I think. Austrians are not generally liked or considered warm folks. Vettel in F1 has become disliked though that is an aside. It does contribute.

One cannot speculate that if they run everything the way they conduct themselves in what we see, then lots of constituencies around the globe have reservations.

This is also the sort of thing that every employee of anything having anything to do with Red Bull will be confronted with. Adrian and Christian will no doubt be asked about this, particularly given that RBR is run out of the UK.

I drink neither product so could care less.

Neither do I but these multi national companies ride rough-shod over smaller companies, which let's face it are no threat to them whatsoever. How the hell can a company like Redwell be a threat to a brand like Red Bull.

Now, Redwell aren't too far from Hethel, so if a suitable sponsor could be found maybe with a lot of development Redwell F1 could stuff Red Bull right where they belong!

PS..Nice one Greg

Sounds to me like Red Bull gave some money to Redwell in exchange for non-disclosure of the deal.

Red Bull are skating around trying to save face, but a disastrous PR exercise for Red Bull. No doubt will cost them.

The big winner is Redwell. All that free publicity and maybe 300,000 purchases to come out of sympathy.

Someone should start a new drink called "Reddish Bully" and the logo should be the embarrassed looking face of Dietrich. See a little red on the cheeks. Mad Max type cartoonish character perhaps.

It could work, thinking more about it. Much like the success of the Monica Lewinsky cigars that were so popular for a while.

Red Bull would probably pay big bucks to get that one out of the way.

I remember the Whisky company I worked for were VERY worried about Red Bull getting upset about the Whisky they had called Black Bull.

In this case the Whisky name was taken from the rights they had back in the early 1900's so it was not a problem.

I just sent the following email content to Redwell Breweries. As it turns out they have a hot sauce as well. Perfect.

Hi Mike:

I don't know about distributing beer or licenses in the US, as I am in Asia.

I do think you have a marketing opportunity.  Millions of people know about the heavy handed treatment by Red Bull (and no one likes Austrians).  There is a huge sympathy factor out there.

My suggestion is to come out with a new product (beer or better still hot sauce) called "Red Faced Bully"  Mad Max type cartoon caricature with blushing cheeks.  Very cheap printing.

The free internet following you will get, plus media (little micro brewery fights back against Austrian giant) will ensure you sell more hot sauce than Monica Lewinsky cigars.

I wish you luck mate.  If you do get such a hot sauce I would air freight a case or two to Manila, and sell it.

Cheers
