Obama has cancelled a meeting with Putin. Perhaps due to the Snowden affair but I think the reasons are more numerous than that. Russia and China and a whole host of other nations continue to take shots at the "western world" and in particular the US and western Europe. Always making more and more demands and with more and more criticism. I am by no means an Obama fan, which is to say that I wait for the day where he does anything of substance I agree with. Having said that, I completely support his stance on this, and have long been a proponent of a more aggressive stance. An Arabic Muslim recently said to me that the problems in the world (of violence and hatred) were because America is so evil and just after their oil. Hmmm. Well everyone pays the same price for your oil so I guess all customers are evil. This attitude is followed by people profiled in "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares". Arabs kill more Arabs, and Muslims kill more Muslims, and Pakistani's kill more Pakistani's than all of the developed nations combined by a country mile. Also let us not forget the biggest charitable donators. Number one by a factor of 2 plus to its nearest competitor is the US. Germans, Brits, Canadians are also big contributors. Japanese too, especially to remote Pacific Island nations supporting continued whaling for scientific research purposes. Low on the list - rock bottom - for charitable donations, would be most Arab nations, Chinese, Russians, Indians, Pakistanis - I could go on but basically everyone with an axe to grind with America. I have long said that the US should say "no more funding to the UN", "no more military support for Korea, Japan, Philippines, most South Asian nations". "no more special favors to developing nations" and "no more......". As should the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan.... I guess that's about it. In any case this rebuff to Russia should be followed by a very cold G20 summit and a much harder line going forward. For those paying taxes in major donating countries to support the likes of China and Russia, I should think a touch of annoyance is in order. While I don't like Obama, this move I approve of. As a post script, Ed Snowden should be brought to trial and let the jury decide. This asylum thing is nonsense. |
