OK, Argentina can have the Pope, if they can stop bothering us about the Falklands!

FRANCISCUM.... <thumbsup>

Well I was happy they went outside Europe (about time). I was impressed with his manner, time will tell but I liked his approach as a cardinal.

I am not religious in anyway but I thought they were looking at getting a Pope who was younger?

At 76 years old I would not say this is much better. Seeing him being helped up to greet the crowds also shows that he is not as mobile as you would have expected.

Surely someone in their 60's would see out two decades?

I had anticipated that they might pick a younger pope too, Jim. The Catholic Church faces many challenges in the coming years, with plenty of calls for reform, and I would have thought they might want someone who will not only live to see those reforms through, but also remain fit and well enough to play an active role in leading the church for that time as well. It is possible that the new pope will focus on reforming the structures and institutions of the Vatican, rather than tackling some of the doctrinal challenges facing Catholicism.

As far as we ever learn about what goes on during conclave, I expect it will emerge that Bergoglio was something of a compromise candidate between those who wanted sweeping reform and those who did not.

There might be scandals as well, but that I am not at all certain of.

I agree with you Red Andy (do you have a shorter nick name?). I am not a fan of organized religion at all, but I see Catholicism as a necessary counter to Islamic fervor. Beyond that the basic principles of generosity and foregiveness instead of pure retribution in the name of a prophet is something that is needed.

Back to why I agree with you, the church needs to recognize evolution and the value of a learning curve. Religion should not be stagnant. The two major religions in the world today are so stuck in the past that they are not relevant anymore. This papal selection is not, in my view, of any benefit to mankind.
