"Much has been written about Sebastian Vettel's overtake on Kamui Kobayashi at the Brazilian Grand Prix, which looked to have happened under what looked like yellow flags. However that wasn't the case after the FIA clarified that the warnings were in fact 'slippery surface' flags which are yellow and red and are advisory - therefore overtaking isn't prohibited. However onboard video footage has now emerged of a second overtake which shows the 2012 champion passing the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne under yellow flags. An illuminated yellow board can be seen to the right of Vettel's car as he exits the Curva do Sol. He then proceeds to overtake Vergne along the Reta Oposta, completing the pass some 60 metres before the illuminated green board - marking the end of the restricted zone. Had the illegal overtake been spotted sooner, Ferrari may have been able to protest the result with Vettel likely to have been handed a 20-second post-race penalty for the rule infringement, knocking him down to 8th position - enough to hand the title to Fernando Alonso by a single point. The move is however unlikely to offer Ferrari any hope of overturning the result following the publication of the final classification by the governing body. Video: The video shows the yellow flag to the right. Vettel then passes the green flag to the left after he has completed the move. His steering wheel also shows a yellow light as he makes the pass." Complete story here. |

Wow... what an even more dramatic ending to this season that would have been, we would still have a triple WDC just a different one ... Sadly (if true ) it 'emerged' too late to change anything. Of course it is not the first time something like this has gotten missed when a race is as eventful as the one on Sunday. Granted that the outcome usually does not have as big an impact but that is F1 for you.
I'm sure it will give great comfort to many in the years to come.

I just follow the FIA's lead. I don't know why just because a result is announced it cannot change if new information comes to light... didn't Jordan get declared 2003 Brazil GP race winner after the official results had been posted declaring Kimi as winner. |

I'll even go on record and say if they should consider changing it... I was happy for either Vettel or Alonso to win the title... I'd have to change my avatar/sig again...

Quite frankly, if there was any danger between the last yellow board and the green one, the green one would have been yellow too. Sadly, I don't think there's any story here, although if it had been Schumacher he'd have been stripped of all seven titles and made to drive for Jordan... lol |

In F1 rules are rules but as we've seen time and again not always definitive... |

Seems there is some form of algorithm in place, up to a certain degree of lack of importance, rule is applicable, increased importance for the participants to receive or not receive punishment and how it might affect the outcome of the race out will come the log tables http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Log_tables |
