However, towards the end of his in-lap, Vettel was ordered over the radio to stop his car immediately and he pulled over at Turn 19.

Formula 1 regulations state that drivers must return to the pits after qualifying under their own power so that a one-litre fuel sample can be taken from the car for analysis.

Article 6.6.2 of the technical regulations states: "Competitors must ensure that a one litre sample of fuel may be taken from the car at any time during the event.

"Except in cases of force majeure (accepted as such by the stewards of the meeting), if a sample of fuel is required after a practice session the car concerned must have first been driven back to the pits under its own power."

Abu Dhabi is not the easiest track to overtake on, so will be interesting to see if Vettel manages to race into serious points despite starting from the back tomorrow? <think>
Definitely a great opportunity for Alonso in the WDC.

Let's hope that Maldonado doesn't take Nando out! Normally, the luck factor for Vettel means if he doesn't get points, his main rivals don't either.

Actually, it's the same for all drivers whose luck is in....

And they tried to wriggle out of it....

Quote:

A statement from governing body the FIA said: "The stewards heard from the driver and team representatives and studied telemetry evidence that showed the reason why the car was stopped.

The stewards accepted the explanation and considered the incident as being a case of force majeure.

However, a report was received from the technical delegate that showed during post-qualifying scrutineering an insufficient quantity of fuel for sampling purposes.

The stewards determine that this is a breach of article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula 1 technical regulations and the competitor is accordingly excluded from the results of the qualifying session.
"The competitor is however allowed to start the race from the back of the grid."

Red Bull have not yet revealed why Vettel's car stopped or why it did not have enough fuel on board.

Vettel said after the announcement: "One of the best ski jumpers of all time once said: 'Every chance is an opportunity.' And as far as we are concerned there are still plenty of chances tomorrow."

I still don't understand why they need a litre of fuel....

The title leader, who had qualified third, did not have enough fuel in his car for a fuel sample to be taken.

Did a Ferrari employee syphon his fuel out when it parked on the track? <blink>

Another twist. Makes it vital for Nando to get a good points haul tomorrow, and more interesting for us neutrals <thumbsup>

They had to make that call given what happened to Hamilton earlier in the season. It certainly spices things up again. It could be a great race tomorrow.

That's Horner's next line of defence.... After he's treated his pout with an ice pack...

Seems a stupid move if they did it to gain Vettel a better time, as has been said on here, all Vettel has to do is finish in front of Alonso and despite losing time in the final practice, I am sure a decent qualifying position would have been possible, or maybe Vettel and co didn't fancy their chances actually have to race in the pack.

Also that move has history as Lewis found out. Like the stewards were going to believe any excuse.

Hasn't Abu Dhabi been a bit of a bore-fest race though? Or am I mixing it up with Bahrain?

Not a real active race.
