What a terrible storm! I really hope the USA gets itself back to normal as soon as it can. What a waste of life and property. However don't forget the other countries which have been touched by disaster. Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. |

I saw the news of the flooding. A couple of years ago my house flooded twice (I have since moved to higher ground). The first time was only ankle deep but the clean up was not fun. Smelly mud not just in the house but all over the property. The second time the water was 5 feet deep inside the house. I lost most of my electronics, mattresses, ref, chairs, etc. When the water inside your house goes above toilet level, you essentially have raw sewage backing up from your toilets. I have a friend from St. Louis who had his property (but not house) flooded a couple of months ago. No power in sweltering heat. The biggest problem outside of the clean up was the mosquito plague. Nile River Fever or something like that. Once you go through a flood, you really empathize with others that do. It is really horrible. At the onset you realize how helpless you are. Then there is the aftermath. I hope their lives return to normal soon. |

Our country office in Haiti will continue to monitor the situation and more information will be released as it becomes available. Compassion Dominican Republic has submitted information regarding the impact of Hurricane Sandy on 26 October. Currently, 378 children from five projects in the south-west of the country have been affected. The homes of many families were damaged or flooded and some have lost personal belongings. The roofs of the Peniel Student Centre and the El Buen Pastor Student Centre were also damaged during the hurricane. My dad's second wife (my mom died) was a nanny for the Red Cross managers in Vancouver, Canada. They had an extravagant estate paid for by the Red Cross. Both husband and wife were doctors. They loved their parties. One day my dad's wife noticed the baby child alone in the garden facing the sun. The baby was suffering sun burn. She scolded the mother (the Red Cross doctor) who replied she wanted her baby daughter to have colour on her face. This woman - a doctor no less - deliberately placed and left her infant child in the summer sunlight. To get colour. For her Red Cross guests. |

Even at the very basic level, only recently did I find out that a lot of the people collecting for charity are actually paid from the money they collect, a percentage!! I genuinely thought it was an act of charity not a commission paid job. When the admin is taken out, what the F is left for the cause you thought you was contributing too? |

Small or Local charities can be run by unpaid volunteers (if they get enough of them) but large international charities cannot... that much is clear. The salary rates are a matter for the individual charities to approve... their value for money is always going to be subjective and most of us do know what the roles involve so it is hard to comment. |

What about the chuggers then? Some of them in the UK get paid as much as £15 a flaming hour to p!ss people off by harrassing them in the street. It's just not right! |
