While Honda's return to F1 as an engine supplier is very welcome I am surprised McLaren have as yet not gone the whole hog and built their own engines. |

They don't even have their own engines for the road cars, the old Mclaren F1 was Mercedes and this new one they say is in house, was designed, developed and manufactured by engineers at UK powertrain specialist Ricardo Mclaren are a chassis supplier only. You are basically buying a chassis with someone Else's engine bolted on. |

I think that you will find that the old Mclaren F1 engine was a BMW V12... you must be thinking of the SLR.I knew the engine was by Ricardo, but I thought they were part of McLaren.

Could be interesting. Would be a shame to see a completely winless Mercedes however ![]() At least Mclaren were giving them something to shout about. |

Yep it was the 60-degree V12 engine called the BMW S70/2, the SLR had the SOHC, V8 engine. As for Ricardo, that appears to still be independent, therefore Mclaren still do not make their own engine, they gave the order of what they wanted and Ricardo built it opening a new engine-build facility just for the Mclaren. |

I still can't understand why they don't but so long as they keep winning races and championship they must feel no need. |

Are you implying that the accumulation of Lewis is tantamount to a win? Lewis has never driven a midfield car in F1, I think he's in for a shock.
