Germany is to legislate that infant circumcision is legal, which will negate a court decision. From the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-19535090 While religious groups are leading the protests saying the ruling is against their religions, I am not so sure. I am for circumcision for infants as will be made clear below. I do not believe for a moment, however, that circumcision can be said to be part of a religion any more than part of your religion is that you must wear a hat, not shave, not eat pork or beef, etc. The reason for circumcison is that it reduces infections and results in an easier-to-keep-clean penis. Very simple. It is a form of preventive medicine much like getting the dentist to clean your teeth. In the old days the primary places of study and learning were organized and administered by organized religion. There were no other widespread forums of education that persevered. As such the development of the techniques for circumcision and the need for/benefits of circumcision largely came from organized religion. As did algebra. As did animal husbandry. This does not mean it has anything to do with religion. It has nothing to do with a belief in a god or other deity. In the Philippines most of the non-public schools are run by the Catholic church. They teach math. That does not mean that math is part of the Catholic religion. I think that circumcision is a good thing and the benefits outweigh any possible risks which in any case are trivial. In addition to the health reasons, a more compelling reason would be this: In all my experiences with women, virtually all of them strongly prefer a circumcised penis. I have been with many many women and not one said they prefered a non-circumcised penis. Most do not want to be with a guy who is not circumcised if they could have their preference. I was circumcised pretty much at birth. I can't remember it at all. Same as my eldest son. We have no memory of any pain or discomfort and I am sure at those young ages we healed much more rapidly than, say a teenager. In contrast my younger son was not circumcised at birth. His Filipino doctor was too stubborn. Even though the majority of Filipinos who can afford it do circumcise their sons, they typically do it between ages 10 to 13. My John worried about this for years. He constantly asked if it would hurt. When the time came (11 years old) he was crying and didn't want to go. It took us 3 days to get him there. Now he is happy and no longer has the problems he used to have. No more pimples. No more pain when urinating. Easier to wash himself. It would have been much better to have the circumcision performed near his birth. |
