As you said PF a world hero.

I kinda agree. A world hero.

I didn't get choked as I did with the news of Flood. I do remember watching the broadcast and his statement about the giant leap for mankind.

Today we look back at the Apollo missions with some detachment.

The astronaughts were incredibly brave. We didn't appreciate it at the time but now we should know how massive the undertakings with such primitive computers.

These guys were so brave knowing how tenuous the technology they were relying upon. I think Apollo 13 is a much more emotive mission.

Nevertheless, Armstrong was the first, he was brave and he was eloquent. I hope his name will never be forgotten. It won't by me.

Neil Armstrong was famously reticent about his achievements, not really giving interviews or appearing in public much in the decades after the moon landing.

I heard a nice story about him, though. Apparently among friends and family he had a habit of telling really lame jokes about the moon. When nobody laughed, he would say, "Ah, I guess you had to be there."

No idea if it's true but certainly a good story!

The first thread I have seen that does not have at least a dozen posters say he never landed on the moon and it was all an hoax. Why are there not stars, why does the flag flutter blah blah blah.
RIP, seemed a nice guy and not your usual, in your face achiever.

I had the incredible great fortune to accidentally encounter a large group of Astranaughts and aviation pioneers. I poured myself a cup of coffee from an urn in the lobby of a hotel I was staying at. The manager stopped me and told me the coffee was off limits to me because it was for an important group of Notables. One of the guys setting around walked up to me and asked "Are you a pilot?" When I said yes, he told the manager "It's alright, he's one of us." Only then was I told that this was the annual Gathering of the Eagles. I was made welcome by this group of heroes and spent the rest of the evening hanging out with them. When I asked about one of their group who I had not seen, I was told that he was ill and couldn't make it. I told them that was doubly sad for me since we were both named after his father and we had not seen each other since we were boys. I was then told I could join up with them any time I could.

They were most of the really important people in aviation history and were incredibly quiet and unassuming men (and one woman who could cuss like a sailor and drink like a sponge, God rest her) Even among this group Commander Armstrong stood out because he didn't stand out.
