It pains me as a fiscal conservative to see how far off field US Republicans have gone. Pretty soon they will be twins with the Pakistani tribal leaders or the Saudi conservatives or the Iranian clerics who equate earthquakes with loose women.

The link to the BBC article:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19319240

This nutter is saying that rape victims should be able to control themselves so as to not get pregnant during rape. This is to justify his position that abortions should not be allowed even if pregnancy is due to rape.

Quote:

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Honestly, it is so scary that idiots like this are elected to public office.

I am not proposing a view on abortion one way or the other, notwithstanding my personal views. What I am saying is that people who have views should not be so bloody stupid as to try to justify it in this manner.

What a Twit. Twat. Wanker.

I have heard this sort of nonsense from anti-choicers before, despite it having no basis in reality. Not that "reality" is generally a strong point for the Christian Right.

But this takes things a step further, into trivialising the crime of rape itself. With guys like this on the loose, and the Julian Assange saga taking ever more ridiculous turns, it's no wonder that so many rapes go unreported.

Great story Pasta, somehow this seems to have escaped major US news outlets, or I've just been out of the loop.

This guy may be a nutter, but the sadder part is he is probably expressing the views of his supporters. I live in conservative stronghold Alabama, and it's kinda scary what some people believe.

He is now trying to say he didn't mean what he said. From the BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19335083

Quote:

The 65-year-old congressman replied: "It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that is really rare.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said Mr Akin's claim "contradicts basic biological truths".

To now ask for foregiveness and say he simply chose the wrong words is rather stupid. Those words were indicative of an ignorant and stupid person who does not understand or know the facts but will not let that stand in the way of saying anything - however stupid - to support their position.

We wonder how much ignorance and stupidity underlies the rest of their beliefs and political agenda.

The man does not deserve to hold office and frankly the American people don't deserve to suffer people like this.

This issue must be getting a lot of US media attention as even Obama is weighing in.

Todd Akin rape comments prompt GOP to pull campaign funding, calls to exit race

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/wit...d010_story.html

Good to see that. Again, he's probably spouting something he thinks his constituency wants to hear.

the one thing (amongst many) i find wierd / strange about this is yeah i made some really bad comments about rape which i cant justify, but leaving that aside please vote for me.

The democrats must be hoping (secretly) that he does not pull out of the race and wins.

The republicans probably want someone to shoot him, as is their constitutional right
<sarcasm>

If I were a democrat I'd run the sound bite 24/7.

To add to Republican woes, another of its candidates has stepped in. From Piers Morgan tweets:

Quote:

Congressman Steve King Has Never Heard of Someone Getting Pregnant Through Statutory Rape or Incest.

As the GOP seeks to minimize the damage of Missouri Congressman and Senate candidate Todd Akin's declaration that you can't be come pregnant from "legitimate rape," another Republican congressman…

This keeps getting more and more bizarre. I truly feel sorry for Americans that this is the standard of long sitting politicians.

As you know, I am not a native English speaker.

Well, I don't understand the complete phrase (or perhaps I do not know a word about medicine and the female body).

But I don't even understand the words "legitimate rape". What the hell is that? It seems to be a "contradictio in terminis" like "militar intelligence".
