I don't believe Macca made a mistake ...

It was a proper F up, not a mistake. How could they miscalculate and run a car dry for just a warm up lap, qualifying lap and the trip back to the pits?

I'm suggesting that their actions were cynical, rather than a f-up. They must have known that fuel was critical before and during the pole lap, but they decided to let Ham go for pole and hope that the stewards would accept the risible force majeure defence. One of the management team should be receving the P45, IMHO.

Got to disagree my friend. The risk was too great, why take the chance of starting last (or I suspect from the pit lane) when the worst Lewis probably would have done w/ a proper fuel load would have been would be 3rd.

Looking at the post lap interview with Martin Whitmarsh you could see he was a very worried man and I think he already know it was gone. The fuel was a f up of the first order but I do not think is was a cynical move judging by the Whitmarsh's concerned look, body language and lack of celebrations...

I didn't see Whitmarsh on TV. The opinion in my post was based on the pits to car radio I heard, and the subsequent attempt to argue their (non-existent) case. I'm prepared to retract the accusation that it was cynical.

I am no fan of Lewis but this penalty was too harsh.

In my view he should have been demoted to 10th on the grid as Q3 was the session he ran out of fuel.

The BBC highlights had no qualms with the punishment as the car was under weight. Therefore 10 places would have been meaningless, he got the pole in a car illegally lighter than his rivals cars. Then Mclaren tried to cover it up by inventing a technical issue and telling him to park the car. Not the drivers fault, Mclaren are blaming a mechanic who turned the fuel to suck out instead of fill up and then when he realised his mistake, turned it to fill up again and miscalculated how much went in. Sounds like bollocks, but its their official reply.

Well right or wrong, harsh or not it is moot now... McLaren's real punishment is the loss of an almost assured win and some valuable points, I'm guessing they will not make a similar mistake/cockup anytime soon.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, John. Of course, they have done an excellent job of finding ways to lose so far this season, they might not have to repeat this one.

Actually, Vettel sort of started 23rd, because de la Rosa started from the pit lane behind him.

Yep and Hamilton lucked out hitting a discarded tyre during the pitstop (Vettel damaged his front wing but the delay wasn't as severe as Hamilton's). I believe there were no safety cars during that race so the field was never closed up. He was running 4th when he pitted. Also there was only 1 DRS zone in Spain.

Most telling was that McLaren chose not to start from the pit lane so Lewis was racing on his qualifying setup and not designed to minimise the penalty.

I believe that more than anything gave Seb the edge today.
