Lewis Hamilton has been dramatically moved to the back of the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix after being excluded from qualifying.

McLaren have been found guilty of a fuel irregularity under the current FIA technical regulations as Hamilton stopped on track after seemingly claiming the team's 150th pole in Formula One.

McLaren had cited force majeure and had hoped to remain on pole, but following a lengthy stewards' hearing the 27-year-old and the team have been handed a severe penalty.

Williams will be doing cartwheels, when did they last get a pole? As for Mclaren, all those laptops monitoring all those sensors and nobody looks at the most important one FUEL!!!! <rolleyes>

It was a proper F up, not a mistake. How could they miscalculate and run a car dry for just a warm up lap, qualifying lap and the trip back to the pits?

I'm suggesting that their actions were cynical, rather than a f-up. They must have known that fuel was critical before and during the pole lap, but they decided to let Ham go for pole and hope that the stewards would accept the risible force majeure defence. One of the management team should be receving the P45, IMHO.

The cynic in me says "hmmm....this happens in Spain, where the locals love Alonso, but don't like Lewis very much....."

On the plus side, congrats to Maldonado on his maiden pole.

EDIT: The first Venezuelan to claim a F1 pole position too.

Looking at the post lap interview with Martin Whitmarsh you could see he was a very worried man and I think he already know it was gone. The fuel was a f up of the first order but I do not think is was a cynical move judging by the Whitmarsh's concerned look, body language and lack of celebrations...

Sadly as a McLaren fan, I do have a bad feeling that you are correct....

I wish the best of luck to Maldonado. Plus, I've just listened to the Venezuelan national anthem on Youtube, and I'd love to hear that blast out on the podium!

Good point. That's the one positive to this shambolic affair, someone new on pole and in a Williams to boot!

I see a lot of negativity, usually from Hamilton fanboys, that whitmarsh does his best to screw up hamiltons races.

I do believe they push the boundaries of luck sometimes

I used to really dislike McLaren, I used to think they were cynical title chasers, then in the Mika years, they seemed a little more human (sic). When JB went to drive for them, I thought 'whoopee'

Oh dear.... Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear...

Lewis, Jenson.. Get out!

I think of Lewis in the same vein. Although I will admit Jenson is one of the last gentlemen racers.
