I just spent 30 minutes watching Discovery Channel, charting the history of beer and its contributions to many aspects of society dating back before 3000BC.

It was the reason for growing crops in an organized fashion, and led to the concept of land ownership and cultivation.

Initially it was low alcohol content, and was basically used as a food stuff. It was designed as a liquid diet, and was essential in providing nutrition for the builders of the pyramids. Without beer there would be no pyramids.

The fermenting of beer kills many harmful micro organisms, and so was instrumental in limiting the loss of life from bad water (in particular pond water infected by duck feces) in that bad water could be turned to beer that was safe to drink.

Beer consumption in medieval Europe was six times what it is today, and the big profateers back then were monks.

Beer was so important, that it was the spearhead of modern trade, finance of trade, banking and similar. This makes sense to me as chickens or goats have a shorter shelf life and need continuous investment in feed. Beer, in contrast, tends to keep.

I also can see negotiations. The more the buyer samples, the better he felt in paying.

And so my friends, without beer, HSBC would not exist today. Nor would the pyramids. And the earth's population might be only one half of what it is today.

And finally the Irish would not know what to do with themselves.

In fact Benjamin Franklin stated that beer proves that God loves us, and is the foundation of society.

Beer was the primary source of good liquid and nutrition on the Mayflower.

Beer was also the foundation of communication and commerce. Without the taverns, people had no place for common meetings, and would not have communicated. The American Revolution would never have happened without beer.

If God had wanted us to drink beer, he would have given us stomachs.

There are plenty of chicks who drink beer. My wife's adult beverage of choice is beer, she's never been a wine drinker.
