My fondness for creating games and making things more interesting has taken another step during this long summer break. As a result, I have created something called the F1 Head to Head Championship. It runs all season long, and pits the drivers in a head to head battle for an alternative title.

The 19 races of this season have been divided into blocks, and drivers are paired up to try and beat each other over the course of these race blocks. The drivers are seeded according to their team's positions in the previous WCC (which means seeds correspond to driver number). The game then works like this:

  • The top 8 seeded drivers receive a bye to the Round of 16
  • The remaining 16 drivers battle for the remaining 8 places in a one race head to head, based on the results of the first GP of the season (i.e. Australia)
  • The Round of 16 is contested over the next five races (Malaysia, China, Turkey, Spain and Monaco). In each matchup, the first driver to finish higher than their rival three times, proceedes to the Quarter Finals.
  • The Quarter Finals are contested over the next five races (Canada, Europe, Britain, Germany and Hungary), and winners are decided in the same way as the Round of 16
  • The Semi Finals work in the same way and are contested over the Belgium, Italy, Singapore, Japan and Korea GPs.
  • This will leave us with two drivers who will compete over the final three races of the season (India, Abu Dhabi and Brazil). The first to win two will be crowned 2011 F1 Head to Head Champion

To test the theory, I ran this game over last season, and 2010 had Alonso beating Webber in the final by 2 races to 1.

2011 So Far

Vettel, Webber, Hamilton, Button, Alonso, Massa, Schumacher and Rosberg all received byes to the Round of 16. The remaining drivers were pitted against each other in the Preliminary Round in Australia. The results were as follows:

Heidfeld bt. d'Ambrosio
Petrov bt. Glock
Barrichello bt. Liuzzi
Maldonado bt. Karthikeyan
Sutil bt. Trulli
di Resta bt. Kovalainen
Alguersuari bt. Kobayashi
Buemi bt. Perez

The Round of 16 then took place, and the results were as follows:

Vettel 3:0 Alguersuari
Button 3:0 Sutil
Alonso 3:0 Maldonado
Rosberg 3:1 Heidfeld
Petrov 1:3 Schumacher
Barrichello 0:3 Massa
di Resta 0:3 Hamilton
Buemi 0:3 Webber

The Quarter Finals then took place, and the results were:

Vettel 3:1 Button
Alonso 3:1 Rosberg
Schumacher 1:3 Massa
Hamilton 0:3 Webber

We are now at the start of the Semi Finals stage, and the matchups are:

Vettel vs Alonso
Massa vs Webber

A summary of the tournament so far can be seen here:
