Thanks Guys, and I'm actually being paid for this stuff, a rare circumstance indeed!

I know the following is off topic, but it is my thread, LOL!!!

PFan, FYI, I left the college and went to work as a consultant in Advance Metering Infrastructure. As a physics guy, I am sure you are familiar with reactive power due to inductive load, as well as capacitance methodologies employed to correct the power factor, and the associated voltage issues. That's my new gig. To compound the problems, intermittent power generation from renewable sources (wind, solar) are coming online.

I work for a smart grid firm that employs phasor measurement units, dynamic line ratings, stored electrical energy, VAR capable meters, SCADA, smart distributive automation, and other technologies in a closed loop control scheme to provide a "self healing" power distribution network.

It's all new tech, and I have been fascinated with the possibilities. As an old guy, that says a lot.

Is SA employing any of these smart grid these technologies that you know of?
