I was not aware that Schumi was such a poor qualifier, but it does help to explain why he now is always behind Rosberg. Now seriously... It would btw be great to see the number of mechanical car failures in the comparison, as assume that Vettel has experienced much less than what Schumi had to suffer from. Likewise the stats serve to illustrate that Schumi was able to get the points and wins despite not in the fastest car on track. Which is not yet obvious with Vettel. |

Schumacher beat Senna's all time pole mainly because he raced in so many races... but then that was one of reasons I liked him. Vettel... 15 DNF's in 69 GP's Schumacher... 20 DNF's + 2 DQ's in 69 GP's So Schumacher had less relability but when he did finish it was usually in the points, Vettel has had more reliability but a more erratic finishing record (not counting this season of course) |

To be fair to Vettel last season he had a more competitive team mate than MS ever had. But he also displayed an ineffectual capacity to drive through traffic. He's definitely a win from the front kind of driver. MS, Button, Kimi, Alonso and even Webber have shown the ability for good recovery drives while Vettel hasn't. |

Senna never won if he started lower than 5th on the grid... (he did race through the field usually in very wet reces - 13th to 2nd in Monaco in a Toleman in only his sixth race was special indeed) Schumacher 91 wins, 40 wins from pole position (43.956) 27 wins from 2nd on grid 17 wins from 3rd on grid 1 win from 4th on grid 1 win from 5th on grid 3 wins from 6th on grid 1 win from 7th on grid 1 win from 16th on grid Senna 64 poles, 29 wins from pole on grid (45.31%) 5 wins rom 2nd on grid 5 wins from 3rd on grid 1 win from 4th on grid 1 win from 5th on grid Räikkönen 18 wins, 6 wins from pole position (43.956) 5 wins from 2nd on grid 2 wins from 3rd on grid 1 win from 4th on grid 1 win from 5th on grid 1 wins from 6th on grid 2 win from 7th on grid 1 win from 10th on grid 1 win from 17th on grid Vettel 16 wins, 12 wins from pole (75%) 3 wins from 2nd on grid 3 win from 3rd on grid Hamilton 15 wins, 9 wins from pole (60%) 2 win from 2nd on grid 2 wins from 3rd on grid 2 win from 4th on grid Button 10wins, 4 wins from pole ((40%) 1 win from 2nd on grid 2 wins from 4th on grid 1 win from 5th on grid 1 win from 7th on grid 1 win from 14th on grid |

14th. His last win from P21 unfortunately doesn't count but it was effectively the same as starting from P21 and winning and with less than a full race distance makes it pretty special. Didn't Mansell also win from p13 at Hungary, in a Ferrari too? And considering Hamilton is/(was) a very good overtaker you would have thought he'd have more wins from further back, but I suppose there is time for that. |

Barrichello won his first GP starting 18th Prost won 1GP starting 13th Mansel won 1GP starting 12th Stewart won 1GP starting 16th Alonso won 1GP starting 15th Clark won 1GP starting 12th Lauda won 1GP starting 10th So many multiple champions only managed the odd GP where they had to fight through the grid, whereas some champions never managed to do that... Häkkinen never won a GP starting lower than 5th D. Hill never won a GP starting lower than 4th J Villeneuve never won a GP starting lower than 2nd Juan Manuel Fangio never won a GP starting lower than 3rd <edit> The point here being that drivers who win by being out front is the norm and not the exception...It seems that if you want to win championships you need to race from the front regardless of the era in which you race |
