2010 Records Vettel

So yesterday the commentators were saying Vettel has had the best start to the season in F1 history. He's on pace to break Shumi's wins in a season record. The points in a season will obviously fall, but I think once adjusted it will also be a record. Vettel is already half way to breaking the record for most poles in a season.

Unless the diffuser change REALLY hurts RBR, this could be the statistically most successful season ever for a single driver.

Thoughts?

Bound to happen sooner or later. The tech side of F1 was always going to allow this to happen. The more sophisticated it becomes the clever the designers are the more likely we are to see a driver or team dominate.

The points in a season will obviously fall, but I think once adjusted it will also be a record.

When schumacher achieved 144 points out of a total 170 he had scored 84.71%, with 475 points possible this season Vettel would need to score 403 points to better Schumachers %... he is currently at 38.74% so has a bit of a way to go (but then again he has 93% of the points so far so maybe...)

I was not awear of the similarities between Schumacher and Vettel career path in F1...

from wiki:

Comparison to Michael Schumacher
Both Schumacher and Vettel impressed in their debut races, both of which took place in the middle of a Formula One season. Neither would ever drive for their debut teams again. Instead, both immediately joined with non-manufacturer teams based upon selling non-automobile related products. Approximately a year after joining their new teams, as underdogs they would stun the Formula One world by winning races in cars few believed capable of winning. In their third full Formula One season and both driving cars numbered 5, both won their first World Drivers' Championship, at which point both drivers had 10 Grand Prix wins on their records. Vettel became the youngest ever driver to win the World Drivers' Championship, while Schumacher, by a little over a week, only narrowly missed out on achieving the very same feat. Both drivers won their non-manufacturer teams' maiden World Drivers' Championship as well as World Constructors' Championship.

After winning his first championship in 2010 Vettel has stated he does not want to aim for Schumacher's record after learning how hard it was to get one championship under his belt, though he would like to win more.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for this season... I guess anything is possible Schumacher was on the podium in 19 consecutive races, but Vettel would have to finish 10 more races on the podium to beat that record

An RBR sponsored Newey designed car?

Everyone is entitled to their view and you certainly have yours, however few people would class the 2008 STR as being a GP winner despite the Newey connection.

For me (perdictably maybe) it was the rookie Vettel that made the difference in that car scoring STR's only pole and GP win to date... even Sébastien Bourdais a multiple champion could only manage two 7th places all season.

When you look back at F1... STR were the only recent 'first time' winners not to score a 1-2 (Jordan, BMW-Sauber, Brawn) which kinda proves the STR on paper should never have won that race...

The rain helped of course <thumbsup>

<edit>
I forgot to add Reb Bulls first win was also a 1-2 and that was also Vettel <doh>

Indeed... That is another car that should never have won a GP and again both the driver and the rain made it happen. <thumbsup>

And when the driver of that car finally made it into a car capable of winning races, it wasn't a 1 - 2 for the team if you understand my meaning.

I decided to play around with some F1 stats, and do a little bit of Formula One sabermetrics. I devised a stat called "Success Rate". This is a value between 0 and 1 where 0 means the driver didn't score any points, while 1 means the driver won all the races in a season.

In order to compare all the drivers, I took each championship winning driver's results over their winning season, and applied the 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points system to it. Then, I divided this points total by the number of points available, had that driver won all the races. In essence, this boils down to 10 * the number of races in that season. This formula was applied to all the championships, plus Vettel's progress so far this season, and the results are shown below

1 Sebastian Vettel (2011)__________________________________________.950

As you can see, Vettel's progress so far puts him at the top of the table.

What do you think?

What I think is that Vettel is at the top of a table for a result that he has not yet even earned. At this time in the season during Button's title year he would have been much higher up the table also. However I suspect that Vettel will still be at the top of this table come the end of the year due to the dominance of the car unless he decides to take the rest of the season off once he's bagged the title.

True, but Bourdais qualified fourth for that race and had an electrical problem on his car on the grid. Because the race started under the safety car, he went a lap down and was never in contention after that. However, his pace during the race suggested he could well have been on the podium had he not lost that lap. So it could have been a 1-2.

Of course, it wasn't, which I suppose is the important thing.

Actually you have a point... it is important to remember all the facts, I had high hopes for Sébastien Bourdais when he came to F1 such a shame it was with STR and not RBR.

This is true. I added him in for comparison's sake.

Again, true. After 8 races in the 2009 season, Button had a Success Rate of .863, putting him at what would have been 2nd place at the time. As you can see, he ended up finishing joint 39th.
