Formula 1 teams are to face a further clampdown on engine mapping use from this weekend's European Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT has learned, with the FIA moving to eradicate special qualifying-only settings Ahead of the effective ban on the off-throttle use of blown diffusers from next month's British Grand Prix, motor racing's governing body has shown it is determined to prevent teams from using any form of clever engine use to help aerodynamic performance. In a note sent from F1 technical delegate Charlie Whiting to the teams, he made it clear that with immediate effect teams will no longer be allowed to change engine maps between qualifying and the race. Such a move will effectively prevent teams from running an extreme engine map for qualifying - such as one that produces more exhaust blowing or burns more fuel – and then reverting to a safer setting for the grand prix itself. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92494 |

Has this anything to do with trying to rein in Red Bull I wonder? |

What a load. This goes against cost cutting measures the FIA claims it tries to employ. If a few teams have found something let them use it until next season. |

The idea is to qualify cars in the same configuration they race in, as opposed to having a quali map that runs the engine well beyond what it could endure during a race. It is akin to the old quail engines, I guess: Run over the engine's limits for a few laps, and remap for race length reliability. I don't like mid-season rules changes. But, I do agree that cars should quali in race configuration. It makes sense technically, but it defies the sporting intent. The FIA should not use rule changes to affect competition. |

It does beg the question why is it being done in the first place though? How does the enging mapping take place. Is it a software controlled issue or does it require mechanical adjustments? The main reason for my question is that cars are not supposed to undergo any changes between qualifying and race day, hence the parque ferme conditions. Sounds like it is a loop hole clarificatino rather than a rule chance. |

It's a software change, so nothing mechanical is being changed on the car. I have no problem w/ it. The teams can make slight wing adjustments, what's wrong w/ adjusting some 1s and 0s? |

I appreciate your succinctness. However could you give me another word or two to hint at what you mean to say?? Or even a vowel. |
