JENSON BUTTON is being targeted by Ferrari as McLaren face the break-up of their Dream Team of British world champions.

The team already fear a three-way scrap to hang on to unhappy 2008 champ Lewis Hamilton.

Now 2009 world beater Button has been lined up by rivals Ferrari - three years after he could not even get a test drive with them.

A source said: "There has been a lot of talk within Ferrari about getting Button. They have already checked to see if he would be available.

"The team realise they need a stronger partner for Fernando Alonso than Felipe Massa if they want to win the title again.

"They've seen Jenson prove at McLaren that he can consistently win or get on to the podium."

Button's three-year, £18million deal with McLaren finishes at the end of next season - as does Brazilian Massa's Ferrari contract.

<yikes> <yikes> <yikes> <yikes> <yikes> <yikes> <yikes> <yikes>

I suspect that Button would be more offended than flattered considering it's obvious they'd just want a good number two to Alonso.

And you do not think that Alonso would be a good number 2? <peek>

I think Alonso is flat out better than Button. For Button going to Ferrari would make as much sense as Button's move to McLaren did. Top team w/ a better driver, ultimately not much in it for him other than a few more race wins.

Last year Button was leading Hamilton until some reliability issues and silly mechanic mistake dropped him down the order. This year Button is leading Hamilton. Not sure exactly how inferior he is. Maybe just a little.

I think most people thought that it wouldn't make sense for Button to go to McLaren, with Lewis "Golden Boy" there. Most people said that Lewis would literally wipe the floor with him.

I think that the reason people like Ferrari are now sitting up and taking notice is that he has certainly not been outclassed by Lewis. Maybe he's slower over a single lap, but it's been a different story over a full race distance.

Some interesting points in that article.

Mclaren have an option on Button, so I doubt he's going anywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if Button asked the NOTW to post and article just to bump up his salary.

I found this interesting.

But despite his feelings on Saturday in Montreal, Hamilton may be more open to a future at McLaren after seeing team-mate Button win in Canada – and witnessing further evidence that while Red Bull Racing has a qualifying advantage, it may be McLaren that has the fastest car in the races.

Lewis like any of them can win well from pole. He can also overtake, or at least has the aggression to try, but he (seems to) struggle with the long term of the race and strategy elements (at the moment) so perhaps he needs a car that will put him on pole and run away from the pack.

I think it would be great to see him pit himself against what is likely to be a 2x world champion come 2012. After all, Button had the testicular bravura to do put himself right next to someone recognised as a contmporary great and it has done him no harm whatsoever. Does Lewis? Or is he nice and comfy and safe at Mclaren?
