What you say about my (or any other persons) background actually could be considered a bit racism if you think about it a while. One could suspect that you feel that a white middle class male doesn't have the critical faculties to make an intelligent statement about race or ethnicity. Just a thought! But for your edification I am a college educated (several degrees) male (I just double checked) with a rather decent financial situation. In terms of racial identification; I am what is locally called Half-breed, Breed, Blanket ass, or even some derogatory terms. I am as close as can be figured half WASP and the other half is American Indian (or Native American) or whatever the current PC term may be. Although I have lived in a number of countries during my life (including England), I have spent most of my life in North America and currently live there. Yes, I have experienced discrimination. I have been refused a hotel room, failed to be served in a cafe, barred from some classes, etc. because of my cheekbones and skin tone. I have had a few parents refuse to allow their daughters to date me. I even had one minister tell me I would feel more at home at a Native American church of his own denomination across town. Despite or because of this I have managed to lead a pretty good life and reached a pretty high level in society. Despite what you may have been lead to believe, not all racists are white middle class males. I mean no insult to you or anyone on this board; I just invite you to think about racism and discrimination without preconceived beliefs. |

Nomad, thanks for the intelligent response. I was not implying you were a racist NOR that all average white males are. Just that they do not know what it is (mostly) to be discriminated against. I am a white male always incredibly poor and discriminated against many times in my life for being poor, or appearing not to be poor, or for not being black or for not being a woman. I've enjoyed my life and have taken all this in my stride because for one, most of it is trivial and 2 I don't care much for mob mentality or for the way society constructs itself and have lived outside of it mostly. What I should have said was "if you WERE a white middle class male" but as I no longer live in my native country I have become pretty poor at self correcting my own writing. |

Hey Nomad - so you have to check too. For me also it is getting harder to look over what is between my eyes and those which define my sex, particularly as my flexibility declines. Not sure if I appreciate mirrors or not. What you say about the difference between getting over racial bias or using it as an excuse or crutch is very valid. Bill Cosby is perhaps one of the most eloquent of critics of black Americans in this regard. I think, perhaps, the racial discussion is clouding the real issue, which you have stated though I will not attribute this to his race (that is just a part of the problem). Consider the following: 1. For some reason Lewis has a chip on his shoulder and can't take criticism or knocks. He reacts and does not respond. 2. He is not gracious and has an inability to self perspect. This latest outburst deserved a very public apology. I have yet to see an apology. In contrast all we have is Lewis saying he went to the stewards and made his position clear. There is nothing I have read that even sniffs of an apology. 3. He has, in appearance, cheated and then lied about it on more than one occassion. These were pretty high profile cases. I am fully behind rehabilitation by means of punishment or counselling or whatever. Community service perhaps giving advice in an anger management program. Or even better still, explaining to white middle class kids (or even better white, middle class Jewish kids) why they are still ok even though there are no government programs or funds or support groups specifically dedicated to them through college and such other than their academic achievements, or no quotas to guarantee them jobs or positions. (Actually more discriminated than any race or ethnicity is women) But banning Lewis? Hell no. Some of the best and most iconic drivers were also guilty of excesses in their own way. Shumi is perhaps the best example. He has been severely punished on many occassions. The sport would be so less without the Shumis and Hamiltons and Sennas and Alonsos etc. Shumi has taken it and moved on. In my opinion Lewis has been let off too many times, and needs a good spanking (hey didn't I say that before??). And also the other person who has also been let off pretty much scot free is Alonso particularly in his role of using stolen Ferrari technical information, blackmailing Mclaren and having the audacity to not show up to the hearings. A bit of balance is in order. Something needs to be addressed respecting Lewis. .............. .............. But then I could be wrong and he could simply be flawed because he is black. |

I think that's true. But he does appear to allow himself to believe that he is regularly penalised not because he is consistently over-aggressive in his driving but because he is black. It saves him from having to accept any responsibility for his actions (or recognise any wrongdoing) and allows him to feel like the victim rather than than the aggressor. It's a defence mechanism and an exercise in denial. |

1) ... using stolen Ferrari data ... as much as the rest of the McLaren team. The entire team should have been punished and put out F1 at least for two years. 2) he didn't blackmail McLaren. At most he threatened to denounce an illegal and unethical behavior in the McLaren team, which is very different of "blackmailing". 3) ... having the audacity to not show up to the hearings ... he had no obligation to do that. This entire affair with Hamilton reminds me very much the Alonso's one. A joke and two phrases out of context and everybody is scandalized about Lewis and bashing him. Yes, a bit of balance is necessary. I'd say "a lot". |

It was a joke, why is it not being taken that way? Other than a few on here i can't find anyone else who has taken it as anything other than that. |
