Hey LT, I have been thinking about getting this (I'm also on PS3). I've read the previews and reviews and such, but generally speaking I find these to not be such a good measure of a game for a number of reasons: e.g. reviewers are often pressed for time and are not able to fully evaluate it. I'd appreciate some detailed thoughts on it from someone who has played it, particularly the new, revamped career mode and the interactive media interviews, which sound exciting.

Also, I have heard that the game has a customizable difficulty setting: is this true? If so, how does it work out in practice? One of the problems for me with the last F1 game on PS3 was that some tracks (Bahrain and Canada for example) were quite easy to win in a good car, whilst on others such as Japan it was highly difficult to score points even in the top cars.

Cheers.

The game is pretty good. One of the most (if not the most) realistic F1 sim out there. The dynamic weather is really good - once it stops raining, dry lines start appearing on the track, at some circuits (e.g. Belgium) it only rains on one part of the track. Things like that.

The career mode is interesting. You start off as your choice of Lotus, HRT or Virgin and work your way up through there. If you reach the podium, you get a post race press conference, which is good fun. Occasionally, you'll be stopped in the paddock and asked questions. How you answer them determines your standing within your team and other teams. It can be tricky to get right.

The game is not without it's flaws though. The biggest gripe I have is that the on screen display shows your last sector time relative to that of the leader, and nowhere does it tell you how far behind or ahead of the surrounding cars you are, so you don't know if you're catching or falling behind. Also, nobody seems to have a mechanical failure, however I am playing it on easy skill level, so there maybe things disabled. Having said that, I've not actually found a menu where you can customise your experience and have tyre wear, engine wear, full crashes etc enabled, but that might be just me. Another major gripe I have is that if your pitstop coincides with that of lots of other drivers, occasionally, your lollipop man will not release you until all the cars have passed you, which means that nice lead you built up is eradicated. Happened to me just now in fact. Very frustrating.

Problems aside, I reckon it's a must for any F1 fan. If you're not sure, why not rent it first?

Hope it helps!

Thanks for that detailed feedback. I think it would be highly unlikely that unreliability is excluded from the game altogther; it has appeared in every F1 game to memory and the wikipedia article doesn't mention anything about it. The bugs you describe might be a little bit of an issue but you can find ways around them I'm sure (like scheduling your pitstop a few laps earlier than the rest of the field).

Thanks.

I haven't played the game but from what I've read it seems that mechanical failures aren't included at all. Also the dynamic weather effects I think were first simulated in GP3 - although I imagine things have moved on since then.

Also, Codemasters are reportedly releasing a patch to fix some of the bugs. I might wait to see how that affects things before I decide finally on whether to buy it or not.

Really? That would be extremely poor form by Codemasters in my view. It's such a basic part of real F1, and it's been in every F1 game since God knows when. For Codemasters to have four years to make a game and not sort out some of the things that have been mentioned in this thread and the one on the BBC 606 forum:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A75275814

is pretty sloppy frankly, and I'm having second thoughts on whether to buy the game despite the fact I've waited several years for it.

Would you really want mechanical failures? If I have spent an hour trying to win a race, the last thing I want to happen is for the engine to blow. That's not fun.
