Fascinating stuff. It's difficult to see why so many people still don't think USF1 will make it to Bahrain. They're clearly well on their way.

As far as I can see they seem to be the most prepared of all the new teams. I think it is likely to be Campos that misses out, if anyone does. I just hope we have a full complement of 26 cars for Bahrain. It is a very long time since I have seen a full 26 car grid. I would actually like to see a return to 30 cars trying to qualify.

I suppose that they don't need to worry about construction too much with Dallara on board.

I'd love to see as many teams as possible in F1, even with pre-qualifying if necessary. Incidentally the last 26-car grid in F1 was the 1995 Monaco GP; after that race Pacific folded and we never saw a full grid again.

What will hold USF1 back in their first year will probably be the drivers. At the moment it looks like they will have two rookies, which leaves a very steep learning curve. If they could get Bourdais on board it would help them no end, but I haven't seen too much suggesting that he is a serious option for them.

Campos will be fine as long as they can get the money. Dallara have experience in plenty of open-wheel categories, including F1 (their last F1 effort with Scuderia Italia even got a podium or two as I recall).

I thought customer cars were banned, so how can Compost get Dallara to buid their chassis? Or is it just a case of one unique chassis per team, no matter where it came from? I seem to recall Reynard developed/built the original BAR, for example.

Carbon fibre always interests me. I never cease to be amazed at how you can take something that's like a sheet of fabric, wrap it up into the most amazing shapes, then bake it (ok, a bit of oversimplification) and it comes out of the 'oven' weighing next to nothing and being so amazingly strong. And you can use it for so many things these days. I still struggle to comprehend exactly what parts of a carbon fibre gearbox are made from it. Presumably just the casing?

Not bad out of three finishers. Ironically, it was the owner of the helmet that crashed on the first lap, not the borrower, who made a habit of such events towards the end of his career.

It is down to intellectual property. If you contract out the design and construction of your chassis to a 3rd party, technically you still own the property rights, not the 3rd party.

Only for what seemed like most of 2008.... lol Yes, before the inevitable comment form the inevitable person, I realise that it was only a few times.

Most notable after I suggested it would be a shame if his special 'last race' livery got wiped out at the first few corners and did......

<roflmao>

I still struggle to comprehend exactly what parts of a carbon fibre gearbox are made from it.  Presumably just the casing?

Last I read some tech specs on F1 gearbox developments from a few years back (think it was the BAR team that got a CF design award? <yikes> ) it listed the gearbox main housing component was carbon fibre and it was described overall as "a CF gearbox". It has to be as stiff as possible because the rear axle is attached to it, which many of the early adopters failed to succeed with. The casing is therefore made of a combination of titanium and carbon fibre. The ball bearings inside are ceramics and the gear wheels are made of high strength steel. Some additional minor components inside are made of aluminium and various plastics.
