I am sure there is a quick and accurate answer to this, but as the internet is not forthcoming I wonder if those of you who are more familiar with the rules could tell me what number will be given MS's Mercedes.

Does his last position in the leaders table over 3 years ago have any baring on this?

Why 4 and who lost 4 by him coming back to race?

1 and 2 go to WDC Button and team mate Hamilton...

3 and 4 go to WCC Brawn, now Mercedes, Nico signed first so gets 3 and Schumacher gets.... 4

This is how I see it... Sauber ended 2005 in 8th place in the WCC standings... BMW.Sauber started 2006 with #16 and #17

but in truth I don't really know.

The team of which the WDC is in gets 1 & 2, hence McLaren getting them this year with JB on board.

Then the remaining go by the constructor's standings the previous year.

Regarding the assignment of #4 to Schumacher, then one can only expect so after seeing the team and driver assignments as they (and Nico's) were confirmed by FIA already by end of November last year:

Yes, he doesn't fit into the standard single cockpit any more.

Plus with two cars every race he might stand a chance of finally winning that championship. <think>

Maybe not though.
