Only reason M Schumacher helmet was red is the fact he signed for Ferrari.

His helmet will not be red at the start of the season

But wasn't he known as the Red Barron before the Ferrari move?

Indeed... and he joined Ferrari in 1996 and changed his helmet in 2000...

As for Hamilton I'm sure he or his Father has said before that they chose Yellow as it the one easiest to see... he could keep track of him, sound very plausible, Bruno using his Uncles is more about tribute, had Senna survive his accident than Bruno may well be sporting a different colour scheme today.

I am almost certain that Lewis said he has a yellow lid to show his admiration and affinity to Ayrton.

I bow to your greater knowledge on these things but it strikes me as odd that he should be called the red baron before ever having driven a red car. I'm sure I don't remember it that way, but I remain in deference to your opinion on this one.

One was a very well known German WW1 fighter Ace... the other a very well known German F1 Ace...

Of course there were WW2 fighter Aces but they are not a much household names like Von Richthofen...

It was inevitable once Schumacher rose to such prominence (especially after the 1994 racing incident <whistle> ) that he would be dubbed the Red Barron

Fair enough.

He was dubbed a lot of things in my household after the 1994 racing incident but "Red Baron" was not one of them.

I've never referred to him as the 'Red Baron' either... <think>

I think the Hamiltons have previously said, as John points out, that Lewis picked yellow for his helmet because it was easy for his family - particularly his disabled brother - to keep track of him while he was karting.

Of course, what the Hamiltons say and what is the truth have not necessarily always corresponded (three jobs, anyone?)

Lewis has usually said that his helmet colours were inspired by those of Senna. However, the fact that yellow is easily seen may have been a factor. Or it may have been a coincidence.

What sounds better - my lid's yellow as I idolise Senna, or my lid's yellow so that Dad could make sure he knew where I was and get in shot if possible? lol

As to 'Red Baron' for Schumacher. Well, he's German, and Manfred von Richthofen is of course the famous German WW1 fighter ace who flew a red triplane (amongst others). It's fairly safe to assume that a successful German driver might gain this nickname, even more so when he started driving a red car.

Cue the inevitable comments about trying to kill people.......

He's actually said both at different times. My guess he originally had yellow to be seen better by dad (his original story) then at the urging of Ron also mentioned the tribute to Senna.

Just as I guess Mansell was dubbed Il Leon (not sure if that is exactly correct Italian) by the Ferrari fans, the lion being a symbol of the British.

"león" is Spanish, in Italian is "leone" (il leone). Just remember Sergio Leone (the film director).

It would appear that the old boy still has a fair turn of speed.

"Michael Schumacher has been bang on the pace during his test outing at Jerez this week, the GP2 development team has informed Super Nova team boss David Sears.

Ahead of his F1 comeback in 2010, the seven-time champion has been allowed to get vital mileage under his belt in the test that has been billed as a GP2 development run.

And although no lap times have been issued from the test, Sears - who has members of his team running Schumacher's car this week - has given away just how quick Schumacher has been - despite the poor weather that has blighted the week.

"I would say that with a track that is not completely dry, with the kerbs wet and everything else, to be less than one second off the quickest ever time is pretty handy," Sears said on the main stage at AUTOSPORT International.
