No not this time, it's fresh news made on his 25th birthday

You'd have to say that by 25 years of age and three full seasons of experience of dealing with the press you'd be hoping for a more mature performance than that. He's not *that* young any more.

And what's Irvine's excuse, or Alonmso, for that matter (remember the insinuation that he would rather "help" Massa to the title). Lewis has said nothing worse than any other driver. Remember Massa having a go about Kimi at the start of the 2007 season (in that he said that he wouldn't play second fidding and that Kimi wasn't as good as people thought). Mark Webber is a regular for open criticism of other drivers. And Rubens.........nuff said.

In fact, the only driver to pretty much avoid controversial comments is Kimi, because he says bugger all.

It is six of one and half a dozen of the other... <think>

Hamilton (and his die hard fans) have to accept that if he is going to make statements using very provocative language then those same comments will attract a response.

There is, to my mind, no reason to make such a statement to the press other than to provoke... well... job done...

The achievements of Lewis to date in F1 have been short of miraculous. no doubt about it... I am amazed at just how he has managed to have such split support in his short time in the sport, but then I guess all the greats divide opinion more than most.

I just feel on this occasion he should have phrased his comments more wisely or better still said nothing at all.

Fair dues to Massa... he was proved right <peek>

I'm not asking anyone to agree with Lewis, in fact, he's probably gone a bit too far, but lets get some perspective. Far worse have been said before and far worse will probably be said in the future.

Remember Prost's comments about Senna. Prost claimed that Senna felt immortal because of his belief in god, which I would expect to be very offensive to some people, yet no-one batted an eye-lid because Senna was F1's whipping boy at the time.

Like I said, this is a case of a singular comment being printed for effect and, rightly or wrongly, some people have reacted and that reaction has generally been influenced by previous opinion on Lewis. Lets just get one thing right though, Lewis is being correct when he says that he beat Alonso (on count back) even if his chosen expression was somewhat unfortunate.

Beating a driver on count back because you have equal points is fine as it happened...

But to describe it as 'blowing that driver away' is prose worthy of a
Daily Mail/Sun/Mirror hack...

Even when Schumacher won 13 GP in a season he never felt compelled to say he blew everyone away... it's just not a necessary comment to make... unless you deliberately set out to provoke... that is what Lewis did and that is what he has achieved... I doubt Lewis is bothered by the comments his statement attracted, so why should his die hard fans...

I think the point is that if you've 'blown someone away' it's so obvious that it doesn't need reminders....

And my point is that, as much as Lewis is talking crap, does it really matter? There have been a multitude of drivers that have made boneheaded comments (Irvine made a career out of it) so why do some people get so upset when another driver does it. Of course, I don't know Lewis's motives or whether he didn't expect it to receive such wide coverage (it was an interview for a sponsor so I'm willing to bet that he wasn't being so cautions with his answers).

Besides, it makes a change from the usual corporate puppetry associated with modern F1.

Not quite, I can't imagine Nicole with a golf club in her hands. Hope Lewis hasn't been taking driving tips from Tiger.

And Irvine gets made fun of a lot on this board as well.....

He has kind of put himself in that position. Irvine was a case of "Talks the talk; doesn't walk the walk". Anyway, a bit of piss taking is a given. I just think all the people expressing their "disgust" is a complete over-reaction.

Well Lewis does walk the walk, but in more than one case, talks like an ass.
