2010 may still be less than ten days old, and the new F1 season more than two months away, but the mind games have already begun in earnest – with Lewis Hamilton seeking to remind former McLaren-Mercedes team-mate Fernando Alonso that not only did he beat him as a rookie in the top flight three years ago, he fairly 'blew him away'.

Whilst the pair ended the 2007 campaign tied on points in equal-second position in the drivers' table – agonisingly just a single marker behind world champion Kimi Raikkonen – that was widely-viewed by observers as victory for Hamilton and defeat for Alonso, given the fact that they had headed into the year respectively as a debutant and a two-time title-winner at the highest level.

What's more, after falling out spectacularly both with his team-mate and even more bitterly with team principal Ron Dennis, the Spaniard cut short his three-year deal with the Woking-based outfit two years early come season's end to return to his previous employer, Renault.“I definitely didn't blame myself for the year that I missed out,” the Stevenage-born ace reflected in an interview with McLaren team sponsor Johnnie Walker. “[It was] my first season in Formula 1, alongside a world champion – a double world champion – and I blew him away. I beat him.

It is comments like these that make Hamilton impossible for me to like despite his undoubted talent. Can anybody honestly say that these sort of comments are not arrogant?

It is a shame as I was beginning to find Lewis much more palatable last year; I was particularly impressed by the warm comments he made about Jenson's having won the world title.

I hope that the comments above are regurgitated comments from some time ago and that Lewis now is mature enough to handle the press better.

That's very likely to be the truth.It's the same as Noco's comments about Schumacher.
It's just malicious journalists digging up ancient quotes and reprinting them.

Hamilton: “I blew Alonso away”
7 January 2010 by Keith Collantine

Lewis Hamilton turns 25 today and he’s given a detailed interview on one of his sponsor’s websites about his F1 career so far.

The interview was conducted at Rye House kart circuit at Hoddesdon where he often raced during his karting years.

I definitely didn’t blame myself for the year that I missed out [on the championship]. My first season in Formula 1, alongside a world champion – a double world champion – and I blew him away. I beat him.

The full interview is over 20 minutes long and you can listen to it on the Johnnie Walker website.

For me, his comments are a big turn-off. What an arrogant puff.

And another thing - if Lewis wasn't to blame for missing out, just who was?

Now if he had said "it was my first season, I tried too hard and it didn't work out - but I've learned from that" I could empathise with him, but not whit what he actually said.

Then again, he wasn't to blame for telling lies to the stewards either; he was just badly advised.

You'd have to say that by 25 years of age and three full seasons of experience of dealing with the press you'd be hoping for a more mature performance than that. He's not *that* young any more.

Well it was a victory for Lewis over Alonso, however he did blow the title and if it weren't for Glock losing it he would have blown another. He's a hella fast driver, but more and more his weak spot seems to be the space between his ears.

Victory? what victory? equal point and with a good push by Ron and McLaren staff in general. Remember "We are racing Alonso".

The victory would be being classified above his teammate. OK, only by having one more second place finish. However much his comments above were extremely ill-advised, you cannot take away the fact that to finish equal on points to a double world champion of Alonso's calibre in your first season is very impressive, no matter how much the team were biased towards you. Lewis still had to drive the car, even if he and his father seem to have issues driving their mouths.

Nobody is suggesting anything else; Lewis is one of the great talents out there at the moment and had he not blown it at the end he really would have blown his team mate away, which as you say is highly impressive.

I accept that top sportsmen need a level of self-belief but have you ever heard the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Michael Schumacher or Tiger Woods, men who have stood astride their chosen sports like colossuses (colossi?) speak in such a manner?

No? Thought not.

It is not just an isolated incident and it is why I find Lewis so abhorrent.

<roflmao>

Lets get this straight, everyone complains when Lewis is a corporate puppet, yet now we hate it because he has made a couple of controversial comments. Can't have it both ways.

<roflmao>

Lets not forget how forgiving some of you were when Massa talked smack or Alonso claimed to be "So alone". I agree that Lewis's comments are an exaggeration on reality but it is no worse than what other drivers have said in the past. I recall Mansell having selective memory and JV thinking that cheating was OK if you had class. All I see this is as a few choice comments printed by the press in such a way to get a reaction. Though I bet that some posters here would have a go at Lewis even if he was praising Alonso (any reason for a dig, eh?).
