Jenson laughs Eddie off ...

Brilliantly "smooth" response by Jenson, IMHO

Quote:

Button said the Ulsterman's comments eased rather than increased the pressure to defend his title in 2010. "It makes my life a lot easier," Button said. "I'm in a more relaxed position than if people were telling me I'm going to destroy my team‑mate.

"I can just focus on doing the best job I can, getting the best out of myself and getting the best out of the team. I don't think it's a negative thing. It helps you relax and just focus on the important stuff which, for me anyway, is not really [what] newspapers [say]. It's to concentrate on improving the car and improving myself.

"I'm not one for answering back; there's no point. For me, the important thing is that I am confident in my ability. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I might not agree with their opinions but everyone is entitled to them."

He goes on to comment on Schumi's return:

Quote:

"It's an unusual decision by Michael but he's obviously got his reasons, having had three years out of the sport to come back in. You've got to say fair play to Ross [Brawn] for getting him on board. I don't think there are many team owners who would be able to get Michael in their car. Ross is obviously very happy and why wouldn't he be? It'll take Michael a couple of tests to get back in the grove but he'll be there for the first race; I know that for certain."

Not sure what to make of it. I like Jenson but he does have the air of a whinger, though at least he doesn't come out with really stupid comments like "Blahing" Rubens.

I beg your pardon?

Just what, in that story, could possibly be taken as whingeing??????? <huh>

OK, poor choice of word, but he always seems to have something to say and isn't exactly unknown to make excuses. I seem to remember Mansell, having this very talent.

I agree - I thought he handled the situation superbly. He could have taken the opportunity to slag Eddie off, but instead he focused on what he has to do. My respect for Button has increased on reading the article <thumbsup>

Irvine said Button had been beaten too often by his former team-mates, including Rubens Barrichello last year. "Barrichello is a good little pedaller and murdered Jenson in the second half of last season," Irvine said.

I don't quite understand.

Irvine was obviously too busy selling real estate to have watched last season surely. I'd hardly say that Jenson was murdered by Rubens. If that is murdering your team mate what did Jenson do to Rubens in the first half of the season. You'd have to describe Rubens as unrecognizable 2 dimensional road kill.

Too bad Jenson didn't take the opportunity to remind everyone how Irvine did against his high profile teammate.....

I like his statement on Shumi.

Considering Shumi just beat him in the ROC, Button would have to recognize Shumi is still pretty good.

But he could have easily said that he doesn't know what Eddie said and dismissed it as media stirring. I.e. "I don't care what Eddie thinks, I'll just do my job". The response he has give evidently shows that he is bothered by Irvine's opinions. Like I said, I like JB and rate him as a driver but he does make a few too many excuses and silly remarks at times.

Yeah and Lewis beat JB in Top Gear, Jenson's rubbish. <roflmao>

I don't think you lose too much in terms of reactions but I know from my own experience as I creep into my early 40s that my ability to retain fitness is so different than it was 10 years ago.

there were 3 options available to Jenson.

1. ignore the comment...
2. slag off Irvine...
3. laugh it off...

I think he did right... you cannot stop others from voicing their own views.

Jenson had one race against Michael in the RoC, it was a light hearted competition but you cannot read anything it, much as I'd like to given the results

Pfft, it would have been more interesting had a war of words erupted. The close season needs an argument, why are the drivers being so civilised?

I would rather Jenson actually slag Irvine off than what he did say. His comments, although jocular, made it look like Irvine's comments bothered him more than if he'd launched a salvo back. Now he looks like he is afraid to give detractors some stick yet can't keep his mouth shut. It is always better to either ignore or go on the attack. The middle ground only ever makes you look daft.

I'd say that's a subjective viewpoint. Personally I think it shows some dignity.

Dignity would have been "I haven't heard what Eddie has said. I would rather just focus on the season ahead". I see his response as a sign of weakness.

... and he 2010 mate is, remind me again... <roflmao>

It would be pointless to slag Irvine off (tempting as it must be) and it is not in the nature of racing drivers to say nothing (very rare at least), so by making light of the comment it deflates its confrontational nature while exercising the driver's need to respond.

Point is the one in the wrong is Irvine for starting it not Jenson fro not slagging Irvine back.
